Jan 7, 2010

Why when I do an apt-get upgrade I get held back packages? This time it was linux-generic, linux-headers-generic, linux-image-generic.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrades Held Back - Two Packages - Grayed Out And Do Not Upgrade In Upgrade-manager

Mar 29, 2010

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.

If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager

The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrades Held Back For Weeks ?

Jan 29, 2010

On my 8.04 server installation, I've been getting this message from apt-get upgrade for a few weeks:

Code:

I thought this would be fixed with the 8.04.4 release yesterday, but alas, it was not so.

It's bugging me a bit that there are packages that need to be upgraded, but it's not doing it.

Debian :: Can't Upgrade - All Packages Held

Mar 30, 2015

Since I upgraded Gnash: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=115357 I can't upgrade anything. At least I think that's when it started.

In Aptitude, I have 176 "packages being automatically held in their current state", and 47 "packages being held back". When I updated the package list, there was a dozen or so lines that were yellow instead of green, but it ran too fast for me to read. I doubt that is important, but I try to give as much info as possible.

I'm running Debian Wheezy, 7.1.

Ubuntu Installation :: No GUI After Upgrade / Get That Back?

Apr 26, 2010

I ran an update about a week ago - I am not sure what update was but the update did not all the GUI to display.

Behavior:
Boot Sequence is okay but as soon as the nice Ubuntu image loads up usually the cool login GUI shows up after but instead I get a constant blinking console for a login.

FINALLY:
I couldn't figure out what it was through logs and I didn't make a restore point so I took my info of the hard-drive and re-installed Ubuntu.

NOW:
I ran into this problem again but this time I did not update anything. I had to log out of my account to switch monitors BUT I had Ubuntu set to automatically log my user name in when my finishes booting up (some option that is use-full). So now it is back to the constant blinking login console.

so what I got now is:
1) my computer automatically load my user name up
2) Switched monitors so I had to log off
3) After Logging Off I got a constant login console NOT GUI blinking like mad.
4) Tried rebooting and the issue still remains

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Web Site Broken By Upgrade / Get It Back?

Jan 1, 2011

I upgraded directly from 10.04 (Lucid), and now have TWO problems. I thought I was upgrading to 10.10. Surprise! I now have 11.04, and the following Web site is broken:

http://kdhx.fm/archives/archive_gen....icfromthehills

There are two "Play buttons just above two dates. Neither button is now visible, and neither works. So I have two problems:

(1) How do I get that to play? What is the format/requirement?

(2) How the heck did I get directly to Natty Narwhal, and how do I get back?

I'm writting a program that uses a USB webcam. Sometimes the program crashes and exits, but sometimes it crashes and becomes a zombie process, which I can't kill even with -9/-KILL signal. When that happens, all access to th USB webcam is totally interrupted and all attempts to communicate with it fail.I'm looking for a way to either force this process to terminate or to at least make it release the webcam so I can use it again. So far, the only way I've found to regain control of the camera is to reboot

Ubuntu :: Lost Xp In Duel Boot After Hardy Upgrade / Get That Back?

Jun 6, 2010

I've just had a phone call from an 8.04/win xp duel boot user who has lost the boot entry to xp after a 8.04 update. I guessed at a system upgrade but she checked and is still on Hardy. They write and only have the xp for printing as there is no Linux support for the cannon printer. Using the printer is important. I've said I'll pop round and try to sort it out. Any ideas how I can do this. Update grub in recovery mode maybe or if I need the command line what should I try? I'd like to know before calling as though I'm not quite a novice this isn't a problem I've had to cope with since grub 2 beta ( didn't solve it then either an am still using 9.04 ). Hacking legacy will be new to me. As this is a writers machine with all her work on it I'd regard it as a critical pc, don't want to mess things up for her.

Ubuntu Installation :: Back To Original Packages After Upgrade/install?

Instead I got a really messed up system. Is there any way to change it to a fresh new 10.04 install. That nothing has been added to yet?

This is very important because on 10.04 my video card won't handle all the mods that I had on 8.04 and my system freezes very soon after I log on.

Debian Configuration :: Jessie Amd64 / Held Pkg And Broken Synaptic?

Jan 30, 2016

I was using Synaptic to remove unwanted sound & audio programs...it seemed to take out other files that were non-related ?

(1) Now apt-get complains about a "Held Package" and doesn't tell me the pkg name.

(2) Synaptic is broken...error..E: The value 'stable-updates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources

E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

stable-updates isn't even in my sources list. I've purged synaptic, and re-installed but remains broken. When you close error msg synaptic disappears ? Therefore can't use synaptic at all.

(3) apt-get says many packages that were available are no longer available...like one of the main repos has disappeared ?

(4) I put the same repos that are working for my brother who is running Debian Jessie also, but didn't improve the number of missing available packages.

deb [URL] ....

deb [URL] ....

How or why things have gone so wrong from just removing unwanted sound pkgs.

To recap problems...apt-get held pkg....broken synaptic....unavailable pkgs.

Ubuntu :: No Sound After Upgrade From Karmic Koala To Lucid System / Get That Back?

May 28, 2010

Last Monday I upgraded the Ubuntu from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx in my laptop (HP Compaq volna 515), and I have no sound. Searching in linux forums for an answers, I've got that (as far as I understand) there's no unique solution for this problem.

This is my lspci code...

Also, I tried to clean up the pulse audio .. What is funny for me is that pulse audio and alsa, and the audio players seems to work normally (no error of device not found or something like that).. except that there's no sound out from the speakers.

Any suggestion to discover if the problem is drivers, kernel, packages, or hardware failure? more important, how do I get the sound back?

General :: HD Spin Up Delay - Why Not More Pictures Held In Memory Until Disk Is Ready

Now when motion is detected, the first 3 or 4 pictures are saved, and then there is a pauze for about 5 sec. before the next picture. This has to do with the hard-disk spinning up (I tried without), but I don't understand why not more pictures are held in memory until the disk is ready. how to solve this without having the disk running all days?, or what i should start reading

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Emails , Bookmarks And Pictures After Upgrade To Lucid / Need Back

May 5, 2010

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) a few days ago (without backing up any data first). At first everything seemed fine but yesterday three things happened:

1. All my emails and address book have disappeared in Thunderbird. When I started Thunderbird, it took me through the wizard and seems to have overwritten my profile with a new one. There is only one profile in the Thunderbird folder and it seems to contain no emails and only a new, blank address book (the small size of the folder backs this up. I searched the hard drive but found no other emails or address book files.

2. My bookmarks have disappeared from Google Chrome. Again, it seems to have created a new, blank bookmark file. The bookmark.bak file is similarly blank and when I search I can find no other bookmark files.

3. The Pictures folder (in the home folder) is now empty; suggesting that ubuntu has either overwritten the Pictures folder with a new blank folder or deleted all the files in it. Again, when I search the hard drive for jpg files, it doesn't find any of the pictures that were in the Pictures folder.
