Debian Installation :: Apt-get Upgrade Report 0 Held Back
Mar 3, 2015
Running Debian Stable AMD-64
Attempting to install valgrind from Synaptic Package Manager, I get a set of error messages: Packages held back? Broken? etc.
apt-get update; apt-get upgrade report 0 packages held back.
Synaptic Package Manager, clicking on "broken" lists no broken packages.

I'm running 10.04 and for several days now I get two packages that are grayed out and do not upgrade in upgrade-manager.
If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.

Why when I do an apt-get upgrade I get held back packages? This time it was linux-generic, linux-headers-generic, linux-image-generic.

On my 8.04 server installation, I've been getting this message from apt-get upgrade for a few weeks:
Code:
I thought this would be fixed with the 8.04.4 release yesterday, but alas, it was not so.
It's bugging me a bit that there are packages that need to be upgraded, but it's not doing it.

Since I upgraded Gnash: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=115357 I can't upgrade anything. At least I think that's when it started.
In Aptitude, I have 176 "packages being automatically held in their current state", and 47 "packages being held back". When I updated the package list, there was a dozen or so lines that were yellow instead of green, but it ran too fast for me to read. I doubt that is important, but I try to give as much info as possible.
I'm running Debian Wheezy, 7.1.

I keep getting this message while I try to run updates. The Update Manager says I have 35MB to install but it doesn't do it. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to maybe fix it? Also, how do I 'report this bug against the update-manager package'?

I'm running F 13 and today's updates included updates to Xorg, so I logged out and back in to let them take effect. Ever since then, Firefox has been repeatedly crashing, especially on certain sites. I managed to get the crash reporting tool to report it to Bugzilla, but when I try to go back to add the bug report to this post, Firefox crashes, every single time. Has anybody else found this? If somebody can get to bugzilla.redhat.com and find the report (The email address I use there is joe@zeff.us if it helps.) I'd appreciate having it added as a response to this, so that others can find it and,

I am going to upgrade from debian 5.0 to 6.0 today. I have backedup my home directory by copying it to a external harddrive. There is no other files placed anywhere except for the home directory. Is there anything else i should upgrade that everyone does? Like back up the programs i have installed?
the OS has a partition size of 20GB and the home directory has 9GB of that.

I was using Synaptic to remove unwanted sound & audio programs...it seemed to take out other files that were non-related ?
(1) Now apt-get complains about a "Held Package" and doesn't tell me the pkg name.
(2) Synaptic is broken...error..E: The value 'stable-updates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
stable-updates isn't even in my sources list. I've purged synaptic, and re-installed but remains broken. When you close error msg synaptic disappears ? Therefore can't use synaptic at all.
(3) apt-get says many packages that were available are no longer available...like one of the main repos has disappeared ?
(4) I put the same repos that are working for my brother who is running Debian Jessie also, but didn't improve the number of missing available packages.
deb [URL] ....
deb [URL] ....
How or why things have gone so wrong from just removing unwanted sound pkgs.
To recap problems...apt-get held pkg....broken synaptic....unavailable pkgs.

After tweeking some graphics settings, and replacing some hardware, ubuntu won't boot. Being left in the X session (CTRL + ALT + f7), it's what looks like a log:
[Code]....
^ and that's where it hangs. So I went into ctrl alt f1, and logged in with my user/pass, and did the command: startx the screen flashes, and brings me back to a failed to open devices report.
[Code]....
I tried re-installing GDM, but turns out that the PC isn't actually online, hence unable to install GDM after uninstallation. So I downloaded the gdm .deb, and tried to install it from a USB flash drive, but I get dependency errors. I'm at a loss here, I could really use some help, this is the PC that has all my data on it, 450 GB +, I'd love to not have to transfer that over to a new installation!

I ran an update about a week ago - I am not sure what update was but the update did not all the GUI to display.
Behavior:
Boot Sequence is okay but as soon as the nice Ubuntu image loads up usually the cool login GUI shows up after but instead I get a constant blinking console for a login.
FINALLY:
I couldn't figure out what it was through logs and I didn't make a restore point so I took my info of the hard-drive and re-installed Ubuntu.
NOW:
I ran into this problem again but this time I did not update anything. I had to log out of my account to switch monitors BUT I had Ubuntu set to automatically log my user name in when my finishes booting up (some option that is use-full). So now it is back to the constant blinking login console.
so what I got now is:
1) my computer automatically load my user name up
2) Switched monitors so I had to log off
3) After Logging Off I got a constant login console NOT GUI blinking like mad.
4) Tried rebooting and the issue still remains

I just upgraded to lucid and discovered a nasty bug. It prevents the system from booting and took me hours to resolve. Now I'd like to report it along with the workaround I found. The only problem is: Where? Other such bugs have been filed against "update-manager", but that's just the GUI calling some scripts which do the real work. so what do I do?What should I substitute for XYZ in

After I updated the Ubuntu on my Lenovo S10 netbook from 10.04 to 10.10 Firefox crashes when I try to open it. I tried uninstalling it and installing it again (with the add / remove software function) so I thought I would have a "plug-in free" Firefox - but it still crashes. At the moment I am using Chromium - but I want Firefox back - so what do I do ?

System was running 9.10 just fine.
I *just* decided to upgrade to 10.04.1.
bad idea to mess w/ a working system.
Anyway my system won't go past the "ubuntu" splash screen with the five dots. The dots just keep scrolling from white to red over and over.
I can ssh into the box.
Top shows "plymouthd" is running, about 5% CPU and stuck.

I just did a fresh install from 8.04 to 10.04 with separate "/" and /home partitions. I really wanted a new 10.04 system to start from scratch and rebuild it again & differently. Instead I got a really messed up system. Is there any way to change it to a fresh new 10.04 install. That nothing has been added to yet?
This is very important because on 10.04 my video card won't handle all the mods that I had on 8.04 and my system freezes very soon after I log on.

I upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) a few days ago (without backing up any data first). At first everything seemed fine but yesterday three things happened:
1. All my emails and address book have disappeared in Thunderbird. When I started Thunderbird, it took me through the wizard and seems to have overwritten my profile with a new one. There is only one profile in the Thunderbird folder and it seems to contain no emails and only a new, blank address book (the small size of the folder backs this up. I searched the hard drive but found no other emails or address book files.
2. My bookmarks have disappeared from Google Chrome. Again, it seems to have created a new, blank bookmark file. The bookmark.bak file is similarly blank and when I search I can find no other bookmark files.
3. The Pictures folder (in the home folder) is now empty; suggesting that ubuntu has either overwritten the Pictures folder with a new blank folder or deleted all the files in it. Again, when I search the hard drive for jpg files, it doesn't find any of the pictures that were in the Pictures folder.

I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this pst or not, first on this forum. I just removed Fedora Core 4 from my system and installed Debian Sarge with the 2.6 kernel. I'm a newbie. The install seemed to go fine, after it was done I actually logged in and looked around some. I then restarted to check to make sure that my boot process went ok and I could still get to windows. Worked fine. Then I tried to boot back into Debian. It hung. I rebooted and tried again. Hung again in the same spot.

Is there a way of reporting a bug in reportbug? I was trying to report a bug in another package and everytime I tried to run reportbug, the terminal window would display "Segmentation fault" or if I ran it with the --configure option, a GUI opens up, select Continue, then the screen says "This may take a while...". Well, 20 minutes later, the screen still says "This may take a while" and reportbug is still doing nothing..

A) determine if a package is orphaned
B) Report it and to whom
I'm referring to Exaile, which seems to have lost the interest of the maintainters judging by how far behind they are on releases, and lack of any excuses more info on package pages.

Because I am unable to get "report-bug" to run without crashing, I would like to report a bug in "lxterminal" on Debian 6.0 (Squeeze) running the 486 kernel. When the lxterminal Preferences are changed, they are not saved afterwards (once the application is exited.) I have to change the font size each time, as the default lxterminal screen opens up too small to read.

I installed Debian 5 hours ago, and I am fighting with it since then. I'll pass on the tons of issues I am encountering (wrong desktop environment (I asked for debian's, I got Gnome), shitload of various errors when doing basic things, resolution of a minitel).
The biggest issue I am having is that Grub is not listing Windows and I can't boot into it. I've tried os-prober and update-grub, the boot info script detects Windows 7 (it's windows 10 but, whatever), I've tried to boot into a windows repair USB stick and fix the mbr and boot through the cmd (which both returned success). I am currently trying to create boot-repair USB stick, but I keep getting errors about file systems not handling symbolic links...
How can I repair Windows boot (which seems to have been messed up by Debian's setup)..
Also, I am quite used to linux and unix systems, as I am dev and use Mac OS at work and used Ubuntu/Fedora for years, and I never had such a bad and messy experience with any of those OS...
Here is the boot-info generated with Boot-Repair-Disk [URL] .....
