Ubuntu :: Unlocking The Locked Hard Drive?

Jan 5, 2010

I'm a software engineer that has recently tested our hard drive locking feature; I discovered an issue that prevents the user from removing the hard drive password and I used a lot of drives to narrow the issue down. Is there any Linux utility/command that can unlock drives?

There is a windows based utility here: [URL] but you need to pay to use it. I guess I'm looking for the free Linux equivalent, if there is any. FYI: The Locking is performed at the firmware level of the hard drive so a low format will not unlock it. This is a specific feature most drives have that not a lot of people know about.

OpenSUSE :: Unlocking The LibreOffice Locked Files?

Jul 14, 2011

Whenever I save a text file edited with LibreOffice, I get a new, locked file which can be identified with its "~.lock" file prefix. This locked file prevents access (probably for security reasons) to the original file. However, this is a serious impediment as it forbids any further editing of the original file or document so long as the locked file has not been removed. Though erasing this locked file (which can be made visible with "Ctrl-H" if hidden) should free the original, this in fact is not the case. how to unlock these locked files?

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive. If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

Ubuntu :: Files Locked - Can't Remove From Flash Drive

I want to use my flash drive, but I had files I put on using Ubuntu a few weeks back. Now I can only open them in read only copies and can't remove them, from the flash drive. I also have had some issues with file permissions on the hard drive. I was planning on reinstalling after a backup but now I don't know if that would be logical because the files might all be locked. I wanted to reinstall because I have issues with USB and these file issues.

Ubuntu Installation :: Drive Locked After Installer Crash?

Apr 7, 2011

rescuing my machine after an unfortunate incident with what I assume is a faulty thumbdrive. The other day I bought a used HP 2140 netbook; which had a 1.6GHz single core Atom, 2G mem and a tiny little harddrive. I got it home, put my ssd in it, and within an hour had a nice clean ubuntu netbook edition installed on it. And everything was joy, mostly, for a couple days. But Netbook edition was not as fast as expected, and I wanted to try another distribution. So I put Xubuntu on a new thumbdrive, and tried to install it. Some time during the file copying process, it stalled. I left it on overnight, then turned it off.

I've tried a few distribution iso's; Ubuntu desktop, xubuntu, linux mint. Same thing every time: Installation hangs after clicking next at the screen that checks for specs, space and online status. I can boot from another thumb drive with little trouble, but cannot install from there either. I've tried running GParted, but running it from the meny leads to it crashing. Running it from the terminal still crashes; running it with 'sudo gparted /dev/sda' it runs, and from here I can do most things; I can remove and create partitions, and format to my hearts content. But trying to change flags brings up this error: 'Failed to mount "Uden Navn" The enclosing drive for the volume is locked'. When I close that popup, this comes up in the terminal: 'udevadm settle is not permittet while udev is unconfigured'

I understand that the drive could be locked somehow because of the crash. So I took it out, connected it to another machine, removed the partitions and changed to a guid partition table, and made absolutely certain that the drive had finished ejecting before disconnecting it. Nothing. I tried another harddrive: Nothing I've reset and flashed the bios: Both nothing. I've tried updating GParted; it tells me I have the current version. I've let Xubuntu run thru its updating process from the thumbdrive, and even though it gives me a couple errors underway, it gets thru. But it doesn't help

Installation :: Virus Locked Everything - No Access To Drive

Jun 18, 2010

I'm currently using Win Xp and am having a major issue with a virus. I told a friend I was thinking of reinstalling windows, but he suggested Linux. He made me a disk with Linux on it but the problem is is that the virus has locked everything up so I can't access my D drive and the cd won't start automatically. I'm also unable to run most downloads...

My questions are:
Can I safely delete the partitions that Win XP is on and install Linux on after that? Is there a way (if I can make it work) that I could download Linux from the site and run it right off my computer without first putting it to a thumb drive or cd?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On External Hard Drive Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Various Bugs After Unlocking?

Mar 3, 2010

I am running the x64 version of Ubuntu 9.10. For the past 2 days(haven't installed any new programs within the same time frame). I've started to encounter problems after I lock my computer, (ctrl+alt+l), then come back and unlock it. After unlocking, I am unable to open any programs.

Attempts to open programs include: panel icon buttons, application menu buttons(including opening nautilus through the places menu), alt+F2, and using gnome-do. I also can't use any of the buttons in the user menu to the far right to log off or shut down the computer and am forced to hold the power button to restart my laptop. I am able to use programs that are already open with no problems.

Also, If i lock the laptop again, the screen darkens as expected, except, when i move the mouse to bring up the login dialog all i see is short flickers of my mouse as it moves around a black screen.

My most recent synaptic log includes:
