I find it very strange that you can just insert Ubuntu installation CD in any PC, and have unlimited access to all users' My Documents folders on that computer. It doesn't even ask for password, nothing. I can take Ubuntu CD with me and copy data from all PCs in the company where I work.

I can access my windows my documentsmusic by mounting my windows drive and browsing to it. I can then playwatch my movies and pics in Ubuntu.But what I really want to be able to do is re-map the Ubunbu docs folder like so:
Ubuntu Pics = Windows My Documents pics.
Ubuntu Videos = Windows My Documents Videos.
I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.

I know very very veeeery little about linux. I installed few month ago but then didnt have time to really work on it. I checked on google but it's more confusing.
I have three partition. One is for Vista home edition 64 bit, the other one opensuse 11.1 and a third one for dell stuff (not sure what is it exactly )
I have installed ubuntu in dual boot in XP
Now i would like to be able to quickly access folders on XP partition, maybe with shortcuts on desktop?
However if i create those shortcuts and restart computer the shortcuts are no longer valid.
Any way around this, or is there a better way to reach XP partition folders without going to root of drive every time?

Using a computer in a Internet point a downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Live and now I'm running it in my computer. I would like to install Ubuntu definitely on my computer but before I would like to find all my old file from Windows 7. In Places/Computer has only the File System and nothing else. In System/Administration/Disk Utility I can see my 320 GB hard Disk (ATA Samsung HM3200II) but I can't do anything in that. I tried to use the Ubuntu 10.10 live in other computer and this work perfectly, but in this one no. What can I do to right now?
View 2 Replies View RelatedFollowing a re-install of Ubuntu 9.04 I now find that I am now unable to access some of the Windows folders on the "C:/> Drive" as I did before the re-install was done.
Using the access from "Places" only some of the folders are listed. I have also been trying to re-configure "Wine" to run one or two of the applications in Windows. However, I was able to configure one such application to run but from the External HDD, because I had a backup copy of the ".exe" file. I transferred this file to the Internal HDD and it now runs satisfactory. The other applications are inaccessible because of this "Access" shortcoming. Strangely, I somehow was able to get to the "Start Menu" in Windows listing all the applications' shortcut links, but sadly not the Programs Folder with the ".exe" files in Windows.
I would appreciate any help and/or advice of how I can overcome this problem to enable me to access all Folders in Windows XP.
I am using RHEL5 in that i have installed samba rpm as well as created samba users while access the shared folders in WINDOWS i got "access dined" error.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi on an ACER Aspire 5000 XP laptop. Everything runs ok and I can access my Windows folders from Ubuntu through the host directory but only as Read Only. I have checked to make sure that the Windows folder I want to access (My Documents) is not designated as Read Only in Windows.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy all the pictures from various folders in my Documents to a single folder. So in Nautilus, I clicked on Places > Search for Files. Then chose the Documents folder and typed *.jpg in the search criteria. It found all of my pictures just fine. However it would not let me copy and paste them into a folder I put on my desktop. Copy is not on the "right" click menu and Ctrl C did not work for the highlighted search results. This is so simple in Windows but it does not seem to work in Ubuntu.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIve managed to install samba, I've shared a folder. I can access from a Windows 7 machine via \ubuntupublic. I can put files in the folder form the ubuntu machine and edit them on the windows box. I can put files in the folder/share from the Windows box but then I cannot edit them on the Ubuntu machine (they are read only and have a "Lock" over them). I can fix this by going to the properties of the file/folder in Windows and manually assigning "Everybody" full control (then the lock disappears and all is well.) I want read/write access to all the folders contents from both machines all the time (security is NOT a concern I WANT the permissions wide open) what am I doing wrong?

This way I could have ubuntu and xp using the same set of music files, picture files, etc. I was having a very hard time understanding how to get from here to there because I'm such a newbie. I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.
I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).
I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 under my Windows 7 but now my Windows is not opening up because of Hard disk crash. I am still able to see all my windows files from 'home' folder in Ubuntu. How can i be able to see my Document files present in My Document folder of Windows 7??

I don't have a whole lot of personal files (mostly everything is on the external HDD) and so I have a spare 55GB partition sitting around with nothing on it, and an almost full Vista 60GB partition. Is it possible to use this spare partition both as a /home and as a Windows Documents partition..?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 2 machines, 1 Ubuntu 10.10 with LTSP installed on it that works great and 1 Windows 2003 Server where I have Terminal server running.I also have DLink DNS-232 NAS where I do regular backups.I would like to transfer Ubuntu's users Home folder and Windows User folder to my DLink NAS and use it from there. Or at least find the way to link my home folders to NAS so all the files stay on one place so that users can use it from both servers without running any sync software or waiting for files to sync.
View 3 Replies View Relatedthe other day my Dell laptop completely crashed, rebooted, got a DST error, tried to run a dskchk off the Windows Boot CD, failed due to "unrecoverable files". Then booted off Ubuntu to salvage my stuff, which seems to work fine, and I can even see my HD - "120 Gb Drive" or whatever it says. When I open it, I see 2 folders: windows, Epson, and 2 random files.
Here's the thing. It says 108/120 gigs are taken, which is just how I left my HD with all my stuff on it that I am trying to recover. Yet my personal and important documents (pictures, videos, documents and even music) are NOWHERE to be found and searches bring up nothing. yet it says the disk space is taken...I am at a total loss.
When he saved doucuments in the opens source word processor as a MS Word document, he can't open it. Didn't had this problem until today.
