Ubuntu :: Logout Of 11.04 Cd Try Out Disk When Unity Boots Up?

Apr 25, 2011

How can I logout of the 11.04 cd (32 bit intel version) when it starts up in Unity? I'm looking to solve some issues by checking out 11.04 and unity just slows me down. When I boot up the cd, sometimes I get stuck in unity, sometimes it starts up in gnome. This seems to be a random timing issue related to troubles with my particular graphics adapter. Anyway, that's what I trying to resolve and unity just gets in the way.

The problem is when in unity, I can't find any way to logout, it's not in the shutdown menu. I need to logout and in to change my desktop from unity to classic. So, where's the logout in the cd trial version of unity?

Ubuntu :: Unity Interface Disappears On Logout / Restart

May 23, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04, and I like the Unity interface. But every time I logout and back in (or restart) it starts in Classic mode.
- If I go to Compiz, it shows that Unity is enabled.
- When I login, it shows that the Unity interface is selected.
- If I run
Code:
unity --replace
in the terminal Unity will run, but then if I close the terminal, it will (sometimes)shut Unity back down.

If I log out then back in, Unity starts as expected. In both cases of my logging in, Ubuntu Classic is not selected - Ubuntu is, which should start the UI under Unity.

Ubuntu :: Fail To Mount Disk Right After System Boots?

Apr 10, 2010

I got a little problem with Xubuntu here. Every time after I boot the system, I find one of my partitions from fstab not mounted where it's supposed to be. I do mount -a, and it replies: "mount: /dev/sdb6 already mounted or /mnt/data busy". Checking lsof of neither device nor mount point gives me nothing, and checking the output of mount I see device isn't mounted anywhere.

It gets better than this: after some time, device can be mounted just fine, this time is from 11 to 12 minutes. If something is doing anything with my device that takes whole 11 minutes, how come I don't know what it is? How can I mount device on boot? Some more (ir)relevant facts:

1. This partition is the biggest - 376 Gb

2. Here's my fstab line for this device:

Code:
/dev/sdb6/mnt/dataext3defaults02
3. After the installation, I changed the mount point in fstab, and using /dev/sdb6 instead of UUID is a result of blind experimentation

Debian Configuration :: XFCE Logout Doesn't Completely Logout Of System / Solution For This?

Oct 17, 2010

As a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

Hardware :: Unallocated Disk Partition Boots Into Xubuntu 10.04

Jun 1, 2010

I've recently come back to Linux after several years away. I've been just sort of preoccupied with many other things. I have set-up an Xubuntu desktop on a 1.8 GHz P4 box with a 60 GB HDD and 500 Mb RAM. It took quite some time with research and playing to finally get it set-up the way I want it - samba, file shares, vncserver, and printing. I decided to try to get a handle on disk and partition imaging and cloning for backup purposes and I've made some fair progress, but I've run into something I can't understand and don't know where to go from here with it.

I used Parted Magic 4.10 on a Live CD to shrink the EXT3 partition on the 60 GB drive to a 10 GB partition. I verified that this worked successfully with df -h in a terminal window. Next, I copied disk (60 GB HDD) to disk (13 GB HDD) with EASEUS Disk Copy 2.3 via a USB connection. To test the copy, I removed the 60 GB HDD and replaced it with the 13 GB HDD. It booted normally into the Xubuntu session and appears to be a perfect copy.I decided to use Parted Magic 4.10 on a Live CD to grow the partition to use the entire disk (10 GB ==> 13 GB). When I booted the Live CD Parted Magic shows the 13 GB disk as totally unallocated.

Can someone please explain what has happened and how it's possible for an unallocated partition to boot.

Fedora :: Slow Boot Time 12 / Cannot See Partition On 500 GB Disk, But Still Boots Up?

Fedora :: Cold Boots Often Take Up To 10 Attempts Before The Computer Successfully Boots?

Oct 29, 2010

my desktop pc is acting very strange. cold boots often take up to 10 attempts before the computer successfully boots. after the 1st successful boot, i can expect 1-3 "glitches". here's what happens:

the first few cold boots fail at various points during the boot process. there appears to be no pattern to it. when it happens, the machine is completely locked up. it responds to nothing, except holding in the power switch for 5 seconds. i'll go through this procedure several times.

finally, it will boot all the way to a desktop. from there, once i log it, i can expect it to lock up completely, usually once or twice. and then, finally, the screen will go blank and it will suddenly be back at the login screen.

usually, once i log in that last time, it's at least usable, although hardly stable. watching flash video seems to cause a complete lockup, with the sound looping. it doesn't matter where the content is coming from (videos or similar) nor does it matter which browser i'm using (firefox or chrome). i've stopped visiting videos-type sites in the meantime.

this installation has always been a tad bit screwy. 99% of the time, firefox fails to shut down properly, resulting in a message letting me know that a crash was detected. earlier today, i was alerted to 3 kernel crashes simultaneously.

right now, i'm using the pc, as normal. the random nature of the problems would lead me to believe it was hardware-related, specifically something like memory (ram). however, i installed memtest86+ and ran it. i walked away for 4+ hours. came back, it was running, no errors were found. i stopped the test and booted, trouble-free.

the pc seems to be stable enough for a backup, but this does have me concerned...obviously. i'm debating wiping the drive clean and installing f13, just as a test. if it's screwy as well, it would have to be hardware-related, wouldn't you think??

Ubuntu :: Unity - Mythtv Or How To Hide Unity Launcher

May 8, 2011

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.

However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).

This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

Ubuntu :: Why Cannot Run Kill From Logout

Jun 23, 2010

Since the OpenOffice quickstarter effectively disables the shutdown and hibernate buttons under Lucid, I put a command into my .logout to kill the quickstarter:
Code:
kill `ps aux | awk '/soffice.bin/ && (/quickstart/ || /splash-pipe/) {print $2}'`
This works fine if I execute it manually, but in the .logout file it seems to have no effect.

I don't know if this is the proper place to be posting such a problem but I can think of nowhere else. Please feel free to redirect me elsewhere. At google's suggestion, I tried redirecting the pipes but that didn't help. I am not sure this helps but I did a verbose output of an example ssh session. I login, open a window, close it without doing anything, and then attempt to logout. It hangs which forces me to use ^c on it.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 LTS System Freeze On Logout.

May 28, 2010

My partner and I share the computer, so we are normally both logged in.

When we come to turn the computer off, one of us will log out then the other shuts down (to have a clean shutdown), but when either one of us uses 'Logout' the system just freezes, no response, nothing, have to turn the machine off via power button.

We can 'switch user' fine, and everything else appears ok but log out fails, I did try reporting a bug on this, but seems to have got taken over with people with dual screens / SLI cards, taking it over and its not the same thing.

I get the 'impression' its a graphics driver issue, I'm using the 'recommended' Nvidia driver (am at work and can't remember which version sorry).

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Layout Changes At Logout / Login

Jun 14, 2010

Running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 and Compiz with cube enabled. I have a BTC 5100 PS/2 mini keyboard, and if keyboard layout is set to USA it works fine. Keyboard model is set to "Generic 105-key (Intl) PC" and I don't see an entry for BTC 5100.

But every time I logout or reboot, the system adds an entry for "USA International (with dead keys)" below the entry for "USA" in the keyboard layouts tab and then I lose keys like the apostrophe key. I have no idea where these setting are kept. I've checked .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/%gconf.xml, but see no change when I blow the second keyboard layout away.

Ubuntu :: Cant Logout Without Black Screen Showing Up?

Sep 8, 2010

Every time me or another user uses the "log out" option were faced with a black screen that does not go away, unless the computer is restarted. i've left it for an hour thinking it might have just slowed down or something but that was a no go, and it happens each time you try to use it. the strange thing is if the black screen is up programs still run. i have a media server running most of the time and i have no problem accessing it while the black screen is showing.

Another problem im having is that sometimes when a user logs in they have no sound. the sound icon is showing that no sound is installed, but when another user logs in there is no problem and sound works fine.

Lastly i dont know if this is a feature or a problem. the first user to log in will always have control over the network connection. for example if my mother logs in first the icon to switch connections will show up on the top of her screen and she has full access to what connections she wants to use, also her account is just a basic user account. now when i log in i wont have the network icon on the top of my screen, and my account is the main admin account.

Quicktime, VLC and iTunes application detector are installed but disabled. I get recurrent episodes whilst using firefox where the entire screen goes grey/black and after a minute or so the login screen appears and I have to enter my password get back to the desktop. I suspect that this is flash related as it normally occurs after watching a few minutes of video. Disabling flash reduces the frequency of the problem but does not eliminate it.
