Fedora X86/64bit :: Wine Won't Run Anything
Sep 25, 2010Im running Fedora 13 x86_64, I used to run the 32bits version, but I decided to get all I can from my 64bit procesor. Anyways, I have to run some aplications on Wine, like Microchip MPLAB software, for programing PICS, it used to workk perfectly fine on my 32 bits version, but ever since I installed the 64bits version, I can't get anything to work. Of course there are alternatives, but my coworkers use Windows, and MPLAb, alternatives have quite similar, but yet diferent sintaxis, so I kinda need to solve this, otherwise, I will have to migrate back to the 32bits version. I tryied o install some clumsy soft, but still, wine can't initialize anything. I tryied to install lots of libraries, but problably Im missing something.

Aug 25, 2010I just recently notice that my Fedora 13 is randomly stop at boot. This is a fresh install less than a week and with all the updated kernel and software as of today. I could not get much information from /var/log/messages (only about 3 lines at the time it froze).
It froze straight after it finishes the boot sequence. I can see a mouse cursor but that's about it. The last init sequence I could see before going to X was "atd" (if that helps at all)
This install is on a single Seagate 1.5TB drive without any other drives attached to the system (I rule out if that's problem with the other hard drives)
on Gigabyte P35DS3 mobo on ICH9 port
the mobo has AHCI mode for the hard drive
I got some bad sector on the hard drive (40 sectors)
For some reason, it kept stopping when I cold boot. Once it stop and I press the reset button it normally works.
I found another forum mentioning it can be issue with the video driver. So I here's further information of my system code...

Jun 19, 2010This has been happening for over a week and is preventing me from installing updates, They all download OK then as they start to install I get this error message. Test Transaction Errors: package nss-softokn-3.12.4-19.fc13.x86_64 (which is newer than nss-softokn-3.12.4-17.fc13.i686) is already installed Then the update fails and I am unable to continue.
I am a complete noob with this OS, I left for a week in the hope it would sort it's self out.

Jan 7, 2011Unfortunately accidentaly I disconnected my usb drive my computer and my VMs run from so I just rebooted for a quick fix Now I can't open virt-manager locally and the VM's can't get network connections I see this in the logs after the last two reboots

I tried restarting libvirtd after with no love so I rebooted and cgroup was gone this was a clean install of F14, after this started I brought the system current, I can provide the packages installed but they errors didnt change

Jan 30, 2011I've decided to build a new system. I been doing a lot of compatibility searches with little luck. I don't have a bunch of money to put into it but here is what I've been looking at. I have been very happy with Ubuntu 10.04 lts Lucid 32-bit version and thought I would install the 64-bit version on this. I would like your input on this system. Are there any compatibility problems here?

Ubuntu :: Difficulties Building RAID5 Under 10.10 64bit
Dec 31, 2010I recently went shopping at newegg for components for a new home server to fulfill multiple needs--chief amongst them to replace an aging old Athlon box which has been running a 4TB software raid for years now So I ordered an ASUS P7P55D-E LX mobo, 8GB DDR2, a core i5 quad-core, and 6 WD "green" 2TB drives (I'm more concerned with capacity than speed). I got it all assembled, using a 500GB 2.5" drive as the boot / host drive, a blu-ray reader, and splitting the 2TB drives amongst the 2 controllers (4 on the remaining ports of the x6 SATA controller and 2 on the x2 SATA-III controller, just not needing the SATA III capabilities). I plan to use Software RAID5 rather than the fakeraid that might be supported by the chipset. This affords maximum portability for the future.
At any rate, I installed 10.10 64-bit (Desktop), let it update, then installed mdadm and set about configuring the RAID5. I decided to use the nifty graphical tool. Last time I did this on my old Fedora box, it was all CLI.All seemed to be going well, and I was letting it fully recover / synchronize before setting up a filesystem (planning on ext4 this time). I kept an eye on it with cat /proc/mdstat.
After 20 hrs (averaging 25MB/sec on the sync...seems a bit slow, but who knows?)...it finishes and the RAID is immediately degraded with one volume (/dev/sdc1) marked as faulty and another volume marked as a spare. I replaced the SATA cables with brand new ones as long ago I ran into an issue like this due to a bad cable. Before trying again I ran the extensive SMART test and a read/write benchmark on each drive. They all checked out fine. So I started over and 20hrs later, same thing.So I shut down and removed the offending drive and started with only 5 drives. Another 19hrs go by and this one turns up /dev/sde1 faulty and another drive marked as a spare. That drive was fine before, and is on a different controller from the one that it was finding as faulty before.
Now I am suspicious that there is a larger underlying issue and that the drives are not bad at all. Should I have just gone with a 32-bit + PAE install? Does the 64-bit have known issues with the software RAID? Should I have just built it using the CLI? Looking online, it seems people are having success with the GUI tool. I don't think it is the GUI tool. Checking with mdadm, it seems everything is being configured right.

I try to build a 32bit PHP RPM on a CentOS5.3 86x64 host. Every post I read indicates that it should be possible, but not for me. I issue the following command (found somewhere in a post):

Mar 22, 2011Say if I want to install openssh in traditional way with ./configure then make and make install which works fine in Fedora but not in Ubuntu as it gives error for a Mailer program when ran ./configure, as sendmail is by default installed in Fedora but not in Ubuntu. What I need to know is how yum/apt-get resolve this dependency problem? Is there any file in the OS where it's listed all the dependencies along with the package names like in Redhat installation CD there are some XML files where it lists all the packages along with their dependencies.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Errors / Resolve This?
Aug 21, 2011I've had a lot of success over the past year with Ubuntu 10.4; however, recently I've been experiencing nothing but problems. It all started with an upgrade a month ago that caused me to experience a boot error. Now every time I re-install the system, I will have a random boot error. I have been trying to install the system on a friend's computer and getting the same thing. I've tried a different download and burned different discs, but I am still experiencing problems with the system having a boot error. Sometimes it is immediate after installation and other times it might boot fine for a day or two and then suddenly it will no longer boot. Is there some kind of bug with 10.4 now? I never, never had this hard of a time with Ubuntu. I've installed it on several computers for myself and other people.

This is very old, and probably very out of date. I also had trouble following the examples. In any case I don't have anything called winerc or wine.conf. I just have a .wine directory.
Supposedly I should have registry keys for printers in Wine, so I looked where those are supposed to be. I have two keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetContro lPrintPrinters: (Default) and DefaultSpoolDirectory. Perhaps if I added the right key here I could get Wine to notice CUPS? I wouldn't begin to know what to put though.

It also says that if it doesn't work with CUPS it falls back to look in /etc/printcap. I have one of those, but it doesn't contain anything except the default comment telling me not to edit the file. Maybe if there's a way to regenerate /etc/printcap to contain the printers that show up in KDE, Wine would notice. Again, I have no clue how to do that.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 x64, and I'm using Wine 1.2, not Wine 1.0. All my packages are completely up to date.

Networking :: 'Unable To Resolve Host Address' Errors With Newer Distributions
Mar 10, 2010I'm trying to troubleshoot some strange networking problems. The pattern seems to be that only newer distributions are affected. CentOS 5.4 and Ubuntu 8.04 work fine out-of-the-box. But Arch, Sidux, AntiX, Fedora, etc. show the same pattern of errors.Certain websites cannot be found unless I disable ipv6 in Firefox. And certain addresses cannot be resolved using various terminal commands (wget, apt-get, yum, etc.). What I would ideally like is a permanent solution, perhaps changing some settings on my router, so that I don't have to deal with this each time I test-drive a new distro. I have a hunch the issue has something to do with my DSL provider (Fairpoint) filing for bankruptcy.
One more piece of information that may or may not be relevant: I recently switched a website from one hosting company to another. I noticed there was a delay of several days where I saw the old version at the old host, but viewing the site at a friend's house or the coffee shop showed the new site on the new host. This leads me to suspect DNS issues perhaps, but this is not an area of expertise.
