Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount Ext4 External Hard Drive
Jul 5, 2010I wanted to make a clone of my drive, so I tried the ole sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdg1 trick, but first I formatted the drive to the Ext4 format. I wish I would have understood that format a little more before I decided to format it that way. Now I can't access my drive at all. I read almost everything on the net about manually mounting it, but almost everything was in Fat, NTFS, or Ext3/2 format. I even read the Ubuntu documentation. I don't know if it's because my drive is in Ext4 format, or if I'm just not doing something right.
As you can see in the following picture, it recognizes the drive, yet I am unable to mount it. I am trying to access the 160 GB drive. I even tried to see if Windows would recognize it. No go. Today while lurking in the Ubuntu Forums I found a way to make a live .iso of my system (which I think is awesome). So now I want to reformat my drive and use it as storage once again. I think I will restore it to NTFS. I thought that the Ext4 format would work better in Linux (which I was wrong), but now I need Windows to recognize it as well, and it needs to be able to store files bigger than 4 GB (unless you have a suggestion on what to format it as).

Before installing it on live mode i had a problem of accessing my other drives (NTFS, FAT32 and EXT4) which said HAL system policy...etc mounting error. I could access all drives with root privilege. I thought problem will be solver once i install opensuse on my system. How ever i was really disappointed after seeing the same problem post install. Googled around for the solution and got this link

May 2, 2010Recently my laptop broke down and wont start up. I'm currently trying to recover my files to my mac with an IDE to USB cable. It recognized my windows partition fine and I was able to get all my files off of that, but the majority of my stuff is on the ext4 partition that I have on it. Does anyone know how to access the ubuntu partition of this hard drive from my mac?

The boot drive is a SATA drive attached to the motherboard which is working fine.
However, my data drive is an NTFS partition filling a 3.6TB SATA raid.

How do I mount this in Fedora 13? I had intended to shrink the NTFS partition so that I can create an ext4 partition to move the data to. Will this be possible?
I've got a LOT of valuable data on this drive, and nothing else big enough to store it.

May 3, 2010Dropbox will not start properly because my Lucid installation is on a SS HD (/dev/sdc) but my data, including my Dropbox folder is on an internal NTFS-formatted HD (/dev/sda), and I also have another internal HD for backups (/dev/sdb).
For some reason I can get the backups HD to auto-mount on startup, but not the data HD. My fstab file looks like this:

I installed the oses on each drive by disconnecting the others. So each drive has a boot record, and I can choose by pressing F11 at boot. All ubuntus can see and mount the NTFS partition except the one I installed last. It's on the 120G drive.

Sep 21, 2010I am having a difficult time trying to get my old hard drive mounted to my new server. Let me give you some background on what I am doing.
I used to have my main desktop setup as a backup server for my main server hosted at a data center. It would run periodic backups of the database and files on the server, well I ended up upgrading that desktop to be used as my main gaming computer. I just disconnected the hard drive and installed a new operating system on a new hard drive. I then ordered a Dell SC1425 1U server; I got CentOS 5.5 (Same as my old server) installed on it, and I took my old hard drive and placed it in an external enclosure (USB) and connected it to my new server. I ended up having to run some commands to change the LVM name to something different, since they were both "VolGroup00". After successfully changing the old drive to "VolGroup01" I connected the USB drive back to the server but only the "Boot" partition is being mounted. I can't seem to mount the other partition.

Ubuntu Security :: Ecrypted External Hard Drive Partition Won't Mount Or Unmount?
Nov 15, 2010I've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"

Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.

Partition table entries are not in disk order I'm trying to automount /dev/sda8, I believe. I'll check that when I've rebooted to by Ubuntu partition, 'cause that's where I know how to do it. I tried to use pysdm, since that's what I used to do the same thing in Ubuntu, but it wasn't found by the Fedora package manager.

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.

General :: Hard Drive Thrashing With EXT4
Nov 1, 2010I'm dual booting Ubuntu 9.04 and 10.04 on an ASUS P5VD2-MX SE mobo with 3 hard drives, a couple of DVD writers and a multi memory card reader (USB).
The hard drives are:-
1 250Gb SATA MAXTOR STM325082
1 80Gb PATA HITACHI IC35L090AVV207-0
1 80Gb PATA MAXTOR 6Y080P0
9.04 lives on 2 ext3 partitions of the 250G SATA
10.04 on the 2 ext4 partitions of the 80G MAXTOR
The HITATCHI has 1 ext4 partition mounted as a common data area for each O/S
The 250G drive has GRUB Legacy in the MBR with its files in a small ext3 primary partition chainloading the 2 O/S's, GRUB Legacy for 9.04 and GRUB2 for 10.04. It also contains the common SWAP partition (primary)
When I boot into 9.04 everything works as expected with as far as I can see no unusual disk activity even when the ext4 data partition and the 2 10.04 ext4 partitions are mounted. When 10.04 is booted however, after about 5 minutes (irrespective of whether or not the other partitions are mounted) I see the hard drive activity light come on and stay permanently on. The system monitor shows nothing unusual. dstat doesn't give any clues either. I've tried running iotop but it fails with a missing CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT error.
Is this a known problem with ext4, should I rebuild 10.04 onto ext3 partitions? Are there some special ext4 mount parameters I should use? (I simply copied the fstab lines from 9.04 and just changed ext3 to ext4). I've read that the journaling process(es?) for ext4 by default commonly access the drive(s) every 2-3 secs but that should just cause a flicker surely.

Jul 24, 2010I have been trying to install windows for 15 days and I was finally able to do it by removing in "disk utility" the sign saying that the fedora partition is bootable... but I did it when the partition was active... It showed me a message error but i thought that it told me it wasn't abvle to do it... and now that windows is installed I cannot any more access the partition either in rescue mode and on a live cd ... what could I do to access the partition either to save all the files or to (it woiuld be the best) reinstall the grub ?
