General :: USB NTFS Disk Suddenly Won't Mount - Partition Gone / Repair It And MBR Without Losing Data?

Sep 12, 2009

Just ran into an uncomfortable problem. I usually never save any documents on my machine, and keep all my stuff on an external USB hard disk. (an 80GB TrekStor DS microdisk q.u)
Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.

Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...

Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.

How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?

Debian Installation :: Critical Bug Of "mount -t Ntfs" Cause NTFS Partition Broken

May 2, 2010

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.

Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD▒RW

Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.

info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.

At the end of installion, lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.

Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.

But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.

After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr, lenny boot from lenny's grub.

The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.

Ubuntu :: Data Loss From Expanding NTFS Partition?

Aug 3, 2011

This forum might not be the best place for this question, but some people here are pretty knowledgeable and may have more insight than I do about this. Anyways, I'm thinking about expanding an NTFS (Windows 7) partition on my desktop computer into unallocated space. I know that there is a risk when shrinking a NTFS partition due to fragmentation but are there any risks of data loss from expanding a NTFS partition? My common sense tells me there isn't a risk but I want to be 100% sure I won't lose any files.

Ubuntu :: How To Mount A NTFS Partition

Mar 23, 2011

im looking for a command for mounting an ntfs partition. what i want to do is to put that command to the "after startup applications" option. that's because that ntfs partition is my storage partition, i play steam games [win7 dualboot, thats why that partition is ntfs], download movies etc. in my places menu, its called 190GB Filesystem, and when i click it, it mounts up. but that means i have to click it everytime i boot up, because vuze can't locate the files if it isnt mounted.

Fedora :: Mount 15 Partition - Suddenly Shut Down During An Update - System Won't Boot Anymore

Aug 8, 2011

I recently switched from fedora 14 to 15. Today my computer suddenly shut down during an update, as I thought it overheated I decided to clean the cooling system and reapply thermal paste. However, now the system won't boot anymore ("kernel panic - not syncing : VFS: unable to mount root FS on unknown-block").

I would like to either solve this booting problem, or mount the fedora 15 filesystem and recover some files. Whichever is easier.

I have another drive with fedora 14 (antec below) which boots fine:

Ubuntu :: Recover Lost Data From NTFS Partition Using Testdisk/Photorec?

Mar 8, 2010

My main partition having all my data like movies, music, files, etc has become inaccessible. Its file system was NTFS. Due to some recent resizing using GParted, the partition as well as my WIndows 7 OS has become unbootable due to some errors. The data partition's file system has become unknown. I don't care much about the OS but I would like to recover my drive. I am trying to achieve this using Testdisk and Photorec but haven't met with much success so far. The main problem is I can see my partition and all my files through Testdisk but I am not able to copy them to another drive. When I try to copy the option I get is of copying them to the DVD and not to any other partition.

Ubuntu :: 10GB Of Data Overwritten In NTFS Partition - Hard Disk Safe

Jul 22, 2011

So the first 10Gb of a 450GB NTFS partition have just accidently been written over with an Ext4 filesystem that spans the entire partition instead. all foolishness asside, what can be repaired. Now I know Ext4 likes to jot bits of meta-data down (inodes blocks) along the way, and this can be about 5% of drive capacity, that said, there's alot of small text files and stuff, coe files so forth that can surely be recovered

I've looked into magicrescue and testdisk, but they fall into the only two groups to exist:
1) Filesystem independent, that is search almost like a patern - well exactly like a pattern match, to find the header and footer of files.
2) Filesystem recovery tools, like, damaged bootsector, so forth

I need one, that will be able to extract files, Iunderstand this will be a hard task, but.... text files; surely that'll be easy, anyway. This is my backup drive, they''re both WD you see, anyway. This is important, given the coding is ASCII surely.

Ubuntu :: Can't Mount NTFS Ddrescue Image Of Partition?

Jun 14, 2010

I am trying to recover some important data from a 273 gig NTFS partition that was used in windows 7. The laptop was dropped and would not boot the next day. As an external drive I could see 2 smaller partitions (30 gig and 500 meg), but the main partition was RAW and requesting to be formatted... so I came to learn about Knoppix 6.2.1 as my live boot cd and ran ddrescue to recover an almost complete image of the bad partitionddrescue -n /dev/sdc1 /media/sda1/image.img /media/sda1/logfile.logI then ran it one more time:ddrescue -r 1 /dev/sdc1 /media/sda1/image.img /media/sda1/logfile.logthe image was made with 741 errors (amounting to 160 megabytes)So Now I have my partition as image.img which I want to mount.

First I tried
sudo mount -t ntfs -o loop /media/sda1/image.img /mnt/recovered
sudo mount -t ntfs -o loop,force /media/sda1/image.img /mnt/recovered

Fedora :: Copying Data From A (western Digital) Usb Drive (ntfs Partition)?

Feb 20, 2009

I'm actually not a Linux newbie, but I'm DEFINITELY no expert either... I'm trying to copy all my data(approx 50 GB) from a usb drive(western digital 250GB) with ntfs partition in one go... The problem is that it only fails for big transfers... works fine for smaller transfers like 1Gigs or less... I have just one internal hdd partitioned into two ext3 partitions.. so I have sda1(Primary.. mount pt /), sda2(swap) and sda3(mount pt /piyush)... The usb drive comes up as sdb(sdb1).. just has one ntfs partition... I've also installed the ntf-3g drivers.... but doesn't seem to work... I've also noticed that when the machine hangs and I try to shut down, it fails and I get a message again again... (sdb1- no sense detected) or something like this... don't remember the exact message... will post the exact one if no one is able to figure out what's wrong...
