I installed NX to be able to log into my server running ubuntu remotely, while using NX I rebooted the server remotely, now I cannot log into it, not remotely and not physically either! Every time I enter my user name and password the screen goes black for a couple of seconds displaying some nx messages and then it goes back to the login prompt.
View 9 RepliesI left the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installation cd I burned in the drive and rebooted the remote machine. Now I cant get it on VNC or ping it by name. But the IP it had before still replies to pings. When I check the DHCP database in Windows Server 2003, that IP's machine name is now "ubuntu", not the same as before. Does this sound like what a machine would do when that cd is left in the drive on a reboot?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 installed for some time now and I don't boot my Win7 machine in weeks!I love how solid, robust it is... and also how good it looks.Love the features like Ubuntu One (use it a lot!) and the Software Center. I'm 95% converted and I would be 100% if it weren't for 2 issues:
1 - The machine won't shutdown. Rebooting works fine but shutdown it just hangs... Kinda sucks having to press the Power Off button every time...
2 - I'm on a laptop but it doesn't recognize my battery. All I get is a "electric ray" on the panel. Even if I remove AC power it still does the same... No charging information, nothing... I tried

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a ubuntu 9.04 machine i'm using as a file server. I'm able to see that machine from any XP machine, connect to it's shares play music, movies, work off of it NO problems. But i can't view the shares from a windows 7 home edition PC (garbage). AND, from the ubuntu PC, i can't see any of the other shares on network. I get "Fail to receive share list from server".
NOTE: Originally i had this machine connected with wireless card because of location. and I was able to see all shares then - both ways (still not from Windows 7 PCs though). However, when I moved to hard wire connection, the network disappeared. I've tried changing IP addresses, changing switches, but no network. I'd like to keep it hard wire. Can anyone point me in right direction or am i missing information?
When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have WiFi router at home and connected two computers running ubuntu linux connected to it. One connected through WiFi, second through LAN. So what is the problem: I can't SSH from Gnome terminal to any machine. Be it local computer on the same router or be it distant computer. SSH session hangs just after successful login. I've read a lot about it and it should be related to DNS, MTU or whatever, but not in my case ! PuTTY client works without problem to local or to distant PC. SSH session from Gnome terminal works also just fine if.... I connect two comupers directly by not using router. So it seems SSH installation is ok, configuration is ok, but somehow router is not ok. I looked at packet sniffer of router itself and I see that packets successfully go from one computer to router and then to other computer and returns back. Firewall working ok. And its not about packet forwarding because I have the same problem if I try to SSH to router itself.
So the question. What theoretically might be wrong with router packet management ? Why PuTTY and Gnome terminal SSH packets differs ? What is the difference ? Where should I search for some sollution? I ran SSH in debug mode, but it was no so informative. It successfully logins and hangs on this line: Code: channel 0: open confirm rwindow 0 rmax 32768
I have Ubuntu 10.10 on e-machine T-1221 I can shut down the machine using :
sudo shutdown -h from terminal
I can shutdown using powerbutton on case. I can't use the applet indicator powerbutton in root account, but, I can use the command under "System-->-Shutdown" in root account, but I don't see "System-->-Shutdown" in users account. Is there a way to add it ? I installed Debian 6.0 Squeeze on my Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop it works just fine and has the same Gnome Desktop. The only thing different is that there is no powerbutton available thru Gnome applets, only the command on menu under" Sytem-->-Shutdown", which I'm fine with on this machine.

I read the bug reports it stated that on live-cd there was only suspend and hibernate. There is no shutdown or reboot. I tried: "#start acpi", it closed with errors. It said that Ubuntu uses upstart. Is there a script which you can add to power button to add the shutdown.? Really I don't necessarily need powerbutton, I think the work around would be adding the command to "System-->-Menu.
I've tried every possible boot variant that is humanly possible and my machine for the life of it will not boot into linux. Ubuntu i386 likes to freeze right at the Logo and progress bar Ubuntu x64 gets all the way to gnome, but it's only a desktop and cursor gParted loves to spout "NTFS Volume version 3.1" while telling me it can't find its own files to load from. Tried both CD and DVD media and varying levels of speed gives the same results.Trying any of it from a LiveUSB boot gives me "Boot Error".Something I noticed is that my drive itself tends to stop reading the CD/DVD at the point of hang. No spin-up and my HDD light flickers at 1 sec intervals.

When I've tried the various StartX commands and gnome-session, but something just isn't clicking. Is there a way to have a 'second' Gnome session running on the client over the first?
To pre-empt some obvious solutions; I don't wish to use VNC, the lag drives me nuts, and I'd like to keep my gnome session running on the client machine if possible. If it's not possible, that's fine; it just seems like there'd be a way to do it?
I have a netbook running ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and it is connected to the internet using DSL high speed internet Comcast---standard coaxial cable to modem to ethernet cabel to my netbook. The wired connection is Auto eth0. It works fine.
However, I have recently installed ubuntu 9.04 desktop edition on ANOTHER laptop and cannot get it to connect to the internet using this same modem and cable. When I plug in the ethernet cable it searches for wireless networks but won't recognise the wired network connection---Wired Network disconnected. Auto eth0 shows up under Network Connections and it has the MAC address and is set to connect automatically. I have tried restarting the computer and unplugging and plugging in the modem after about 15 min.
why I cannot just move my comcast ethernet cable from one machine to another?

However, on my machine, which is using the same network IP as the rest of the office and I know it's not being blacklisted, I can't access the server at all via SSH or web or mail. I'm the only machine running Linux, I've flushed the network cache using nscd, but this made no difference. Can anyone think of what might be going on here?

Returned later to a blank screen.....unable to wake the machine....no disk activity Now have some function via a live CD......any thoughts on how I can proceed from here? View 9 Replies View RelatedI experienced freeze with Fedora 12. I haven't had any issues up until now at all with stability in Fedora. Since then the problem has persisted with a freeze about once a week and then over the last few days it has started freezing daily. I thought at first that it was a problem with an update and that it would get sorted out with another update but that doesn't seem to be the case.
I installed FC12 within days of it's release and I've had no issues until now.
The odd thing is that the machine only freezes when I'm not using it. I suppose this is a good thing, but it makes it harder to figure out what is causing it.
The entire machine locks up and I'm unable to do anything but use the reset button and get the machine going again. I can not connect via SSH either as all network connections are being refused.
I have looked through the logs and can not find anything odd. There are no kernel panics and there are no Xorg errors.
I'm starting to wonder if this is a hardware issue, but the system drive was just installed in November and hasn't reported any errors when I check it.
Why am I not able to telnet to a Windows server machine? Is it because the telnet server is not running there? A remote desktop connection works though.
Does a telnet server run by default on a Unix machine?
I am not very new to LINUX. I was using UBUNTU for the last 1 year and I have switched to Redhat now because I am thinking of taking a RHCE certification now. Actually the problem is that I am unable to install RHEL 5.2 i386 on my i686 machine, I have bought it recently 1 week ago. I tried to use the boot parameter "linux noprobe" then it said drivers not found after 2 steps when it loads drivers.
When I tried to make a GUI install it hanged after "loading /sbin/loader" and said "kernel panic - not syncing". And when I tried to make a text install it said hanged agin after "loading /sbin/loader" and said something like "Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP". If drivers are needed then when can I get those and how can I install those drivers? here is my hardware information as "lspci" says:
