Ubuntu :: Install A New Version Or Distro In The Partitions Where A Current One Resides?

Jun 15, 2011

Is there a simple way to delete an existing Linux Distro install so you can install a new version or distro in the partitions where a current one resides? We have several laptops, all of which are at least dual boot with Windows and with a Linux Distro. A few have Windows and two Linux Distros.

What we want and need to do, without disturbing the Windows install is simply remove a current Linux install and replace it with another install, a simple way. We cannot find a simple Partition command of eliminate install or install over existing install. Since the movement in Linux community for four years now is "easy", "simple", and "user friendly" you would think Ubuntu project would by now have a simple, low risk way of doing this. The delete and expand specific partitions method is very risky (to the O/S installs one wished to keep intact) and requires more partition study than all but a few people have interest or time to invest in.

Anyone know of a simple way to replace an install. What puzzles us is why Ubuntu has not come up with a simple command that allows users to replace one Ubuntu version with another, or at least uninstall back to a previous install when a user finds the new version tanks his system and requires hours of study to figure out how to get his basic hardware up and running.

I realize that Linux community members tend to accept criticism about as gracefully as a Republican or a Democrat but progress cannot happen without constructive or well meaning criticism. For those so tempted, please spare me the "stupid", "its easy idiot", "Works fine on my PC" or "this is the best of all possible worlds" replies.

Software :: Mono 1.1.12 - Install Older Mono To Co-exist With Current Version

Feb 28, 2010

I would like to know if anyone has run more than one version of mono concurrently. I want to host a Battlefield 2 server with bf2ccd that requires mono 1.1.12. CentOS 5.3 repos provide mono 1.2.4 which is neither new enough nor old enough to support bf2ccd. I have considered compiling a newer version or an older version to accommodate this but I think that the only fully supported version is the 1.1.12 and I want to have the newer mono for other projects. I have used Slackware exclusively up to now and am not familiar with CentOS yet so I would like to avoid compiling if I can. The server is an unmanaged dedicated server so I'm not certain of all of the details. AFAIK it is a standard CentOS 5.3 install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install Version 9.10

Feb 14, 2010

I have an HP EVO W6000 Workstation: Dual 2.2 Xeon Processors with 2 Gigs of Rambus Memory with 120 gig IDE HD and a DVD/RW IDE Burner. It is a 32bit Workstation. I just downloaded the 9.10 ISO of Ubuntu and created the CD. When putting the CD into the PC it will boot to the CD and the Ubuntu screen appears giving me the choices on how do I want to install Ubuntu but when I choose Install Ubuntu and hit enter nothing happens at all. It will let me boot to the HD but there is nothing on the drive. It is a clean HD with nothing on it. I'm not dual booting with another OS Like Windoze. I'm just want to install Ubuntu on this PC all by itself. I am using the 32bit version of Ubuntu since my workstation only supports a 32bit OS.

I tried to install VirtualBox by using the "Help->Check For Updates" in VirtualBox and then downloading the rpm. When it finished, it popped up a huge error window that was too tall for the screen (and I couldn't copy the text). It wouldn't install. It said something about how the files in virtualBox 3.2.6 conflicted with those in 3.0.12.

I downloaded the DVD 32 bit and 64 bit as I have 2 machines, one 32 and one 64. After I burn the disks, I put the DVD in and run the check media. The 32 bit version says invalid checksums, cd is broken. I try to install and ever single checksum is invalid, not just one. But every file. The 64 bit says it has bad sectors in it. And will not install. I have tried re-downloading them. Tried burning them on computers. Tried different burning speeds. Nothing. Is this just bad files on the website, or is this all my computrs?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install Version Other Than Firefox (Namoroka) And It Constantly Freezes?

Apr 15, 2010

Since yesterday firefox (Namoroka) has been constantly freezing; prior to yesterday it worked perfectly. I've tried un-installing and re-installing, but that didn't fix it. I even tried un-installing Namoroka and installing firefox 3.5 (via apt-get install firefox-3.5), but somehow I continue to get firefox 3.6 (aka Namoroka). Anyone know how to resolve my Namoroka issues or how to install the seemingly more stable 3.5 version? I don't know if this makes a difference, but I originally had installed ubuntu and then installed kde (kubuntu-desktop) desktop on top of it. And yes, I've checked my sources.list to make sure mozilla-daily repository is not listed.

how do I get it to work? I am just a windows user trying to learn to get away from Windows. This has been bothering me for the past ten days and each attempt ends at the same point.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Install Command-line Version Of Maverick From Alternate CD

Oct 2, 2010

I'm attempting to install a command-line version of Maverick, from the alternate CD. I'm using the 64-bit version. The installation has gone fine - however, I'm having troubles getting the wireless to work. I've installed wireless-tools by carting the *.deb archive over from another computer - this seemed to go fine, and iwconfig shows my wireless card as "wlan0". However, even after setting the essid and the WEP key I can't connect to the internet (tested this using apt-get). I know that this wireless card requires the "rtl8187se" module, which automatically loads with the desktop version of Maverick - however, it isn't working on the command-line. Running "sudo modprobe rtl8187se" pings back an error message saying that the module can't be found. Is there a way for me to manually install it or "find" it?
