OpenSUSE :: Unable To Install New Version Of VirtualBox?
Aug 2, 2010
I tried to install VirtualBox by using the "Help->Check For Updates" in VirtualBox and then downloading the rpm. When it finished, it popped up a huge error window that was too tall for the screen (and I couldn't copy the text). It wouldn't install. It said something about how the files in virtualBox 3.2.6 conflicted with those in 3.0.12.
How do I upgrade to the new version?

VirtualBox is successfully installed on my openSUSE 11.2 and the guest OS is Win XP. I am looking for a way to acomplish two things from the guest OS:-use USB -use internet connection
On the first one, I've run into a howto for openSUSE 11.2 that says usb access for guest OSes in VBox is supported only in the binary (non-free) version. Since I am running the free one, does that mean I am out of luck on usb matter?
On the second one, I am puzzled as well. WinXP image is already installed and I tried to configure its networking via the "settings" section in VBox which gives me several options out of which none is for setting up IP's. How do I get internet connection that openSUSE host already has to share it with the guest OS within VBox?

I downloaded the DVD 32 bit and 64 bit as I have 2 machines, one 32 and one 64. After I burn the disks, I put the DVD in and run the check media. The 32 bit version says invalid checksums, cd is broken. I try to install and ever single checksum is invalid, not just one. But every file. The 64 bit says it has bad sectors in it. And will not install. I have tried re-downloading them. Tried burning them on computers. Tried different burning speeds. Nothing. Is this just bad files on the website, or is this all my computrs?

I'm using VirtualBox on MacOS and I need to install version 10.0.4 of Ubuntu. The setup for VirtualBox only allows you to specify Linux > Ubuntu (64-bit).How can I install a particular version? I've been told that you can download it as a disk image and install it in VirtualBox somehow: can anyone point me at more details?

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:
[code]...
When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

However, I do not consider myself a Linux pro - I hardly ever use the command line etc.
I have been using the Free personal version of VirtualBox for about 3 or 4 years and have had no problems in any version of OpenSuse (at least none that were not easily fixed). I upgraded to OpenSuse 11.4 several weeks ago and cannot get Virtualbox to work. I have tried installing from the opensuse 11.4 package on the VBox site and I have run their generic command line installer and either way I am unable to open my VMs.
When I used their generic installer I got the following errors:
linux-evl8:/home/frank/Downloads/VBox # ./VirtualBox-4.0.8-71778-Linux_amd64.run
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox for Linux installation...........
VirtualBox Version 4.0.8 r71778 (2011-05-16T17:05:29Z) installer
[Code]....
I did a reinstall of OpenSuse for several reasons and it is working great in everyway except I am still having this issue and at this point I am lost as to what to do next.

Just grabbed Slackware64-current and installed on my laptop. Also put Alien Bob's multilib on.need it for my Absoft fortran compiler. The problem I'm having is that VirtualBox-3.1.6 doesn't install. I've looked at other problems on the list related to this and I don't think that any of the ones that I've seen applies to my situation. My feeling is that there is an incompatibility problem with gcc. The stock kernel was compiled with gcc-4.4.3 which comes with Slackware64-current. However, Bob's multilib backdates this to gcc-4.3.3. So, when the Virtualbox installation procedure runs it sees a kernel compiled with a version of gcc that is different from the one that is currently installed and chokes. recompile the kernel with the current gcc. Haven't done a kernel compile in a long time though and I'd like to get it right. So, my question is "Is the stock .config file in the linux source folder the one used to configure the default kernel?". I like the stock kernel and would like to recompile with all the bells 'n whistles in the stock kernel.

I am using vmware and virtualbox for experimenting with different linux distros and for using windows... When I switch to full screen, the upper portion(about 50px from top) of system becomes unusable because I am not able to click with my mouse anywhere there. So ubuntu's top panel becomes unaccesible and for vmware, once it becomes full screen I am not able to minimize/restore/close it.
In full screen mode, looking at the mouse cursor, it seems to be controlled by guest system when in full screen but as soon as I move it to top of the screen, the host machine takes control of it and then I cannot access any top panels or vmware toolbar. Is there any solution to this problem... Please let me know if more information is needed from my side.I am using opensuse 11.3, KDE4.4.4, vmware 3.1.2/virtualbox 3.2.10. The problem is for both vmware and virtualbox.

I have an HP EVO W6000 Workstation: Dual 2.2 Xeon Processors with 2 Gigs of Rambus Memory with 120 gig IDE HD and a DVD/RW IDE Burner. It is a 32bit Workstation. I just downloaded the 9.10 ISO of Ubuntu and created the CD. When putting the CD into the PC it will boot to the CD and the Ubuntu screen appears giving me the choices on how do I want to install Ubuntu but when I choose Install Ubuntu and hit enter nothing happens at all. It will let me boot to the HD but there is nothing on the drive. It is a clean HD with nothing on it. I'm not dual booting with another OS Like Windoze. I'm just want to install Ubuntu on this PC all by itself. I am using the 32bit version of Ubuntu since my workstation only supports a 32bit OS.

openSUSE, just installed 11.2 some days ago and have several problems with kernel 2.6.31 and my hardware, i was wondering if there is a way to upgrade it to version 2.6.32... that i know i dont have any problems with it.The problems that i have is with my ath9x driver, iv'e experience it before with other distros and the same kernel (2.6.31)Another question i have is about VirtualBox, i use it to run windows, and i'm amazed of the lack of speed and performance i have in openSUSE, i dont know if it's because i'm doing something wrong, quite possible since i'm not familiar with the -suse way- of using linux... i read the wiki about virtualbox made all that it's said (used OSE and non-OSE) and nothing changed... it's unusable. i used to use it in other distros with no problems, but in suse i have alot of issues.
apart from all the issues i have concerning speed and performance in openSUSE it's worth of a try.hope that configuring it better will speed up and increase performance.btw, i have a amd athlon x2 2.1ghz, ati radeon hd3200 using fglrx module and 4gb of ram.

I'm trying to run OpenSUSE 11.2 on VirtualBox (ver3.0.8 on Ubuntu 9.10). The installation proceeds without a hitch, but when I try to login, the login manager (kdm?) complains that the login failed. When I go to the console, my login/password do no work there either. I've tried installing OpenSUSE 11.2 three times -- the first two times, it complained about the simplicity of my password -- and all three times I've run into this problem.Have other users encountered a similar problem? It doesn't seem like a VirtualBox-specific issue. Is the /etc/password being changed somehow?

Since yesterday firefox (Namoroka) has been constantly freezing; prior to yesterday it worked perfectly. I've tried un-installing and re-installing, but that didn't fix it. I even tried un-installing Namoroka and installing firefox 3.5 (via apt-get install firefox-3.5), but somehow I continue to get firefox 3.6 (aka Namoroka). Anyone know how to resolve my Namoroka issues or how to install the seemingly more stable 3.5 version? I don't know if this makes a difference, but I originally had installed ubuntu and then installed kde (kubuntu-desktop) desktop on top of it. And yes, I've checked my sources.list to make sure mozilla-daily repository is not listed.
