Ubuntu Installation :: Update From 8.04 Directly To The Current Version?
Mar 12, 2010
Is there was a way to update from 8.04 directly to the current version without going through all the others (8.10, 9.04, etc..)?
or ...
Will it be easier with the next LTS (10.04)?
about this ....!
Will it be possible to migrate directly from 8.04 to 10.04, one LTS to another?

I just tried to install lightning and it complained that I wasn't running the right/latest version of TB so I added the Mozilla repository, ran a check and nothing. So I checked out the Mozilla site and they have a version 6 for download. Why does Suse not want to update from the current version 3?

My question is - WHEN THE FINAL VERSION OF UBUNTU 10.04 IS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD, IS IT MANDATORY TO DOWNLOAD THE ENTIRE ? OR WILL UPDATING OR UPGRADING VIA THE system ---- administration --- update manager will upgrade my current beta version to the final release ???

I have a fedora 11 with kernel package: kernel-PAE-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686
I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?

I downloaded Java into my home folder instead of downloading it in my usr folder because it wouldn't let me(even when I was root user). It is present in my home folder with its own directory, but I am unsure how to use it. I downloaded Java to try to play Minecraft, but when I open then .jar file with the directory nothing happens. The actual directory contains the following
folders:bin, javaws, lib, man, plugin, copyright, licens e,a read me file, thirdpartylicensereadme, and a welcome.html file. I don't like running Minecraft with OpenJDK because it lags tremendously and it won't close, and I heard the "real Java" runs it much better.Did I download it incorrectly, if so can you tell me how?

A friend installed Ubuntu 8.4 for me. I tried to upgrade to the current new version but it will stop at one point and say," Failed to fetch compiz-plugins_0.8.4-0ubuntu15_i386.deb. Hash Sum mismatch" and stop. I can separately download that very same file but it won't do it by itself.
how do I get it to work? I am just a windows user trying to learn to get away from Windows. This has been bothering me for the past ten days and each attempt ends at the same point.

The problem was finding an applet to browse directory tree directly in the Gnome panel similar to that in "Recent Documents". The thread was closed without any solution posted there and also no solution available elsewhere (I searched for over 2 hours) in the forum.
Search for "file-browser-applet" in the Synaptic Package Manager. The applet with exactly that name is what you need. It allows to browse and open files on your computer from the GNOME panel. Once installed, "Add to panel".

Just a reminder, Firefox 3.0 will reach End of Life status with the upcoming release of Firefox 3.0.19. This may concern you if you are still on Jaunty (like me). You may want to search the forum on how to add the repository for a current version of Firefox or Opera. Anybody who knows what Canonical will do in such a situation if a critical bug shows up after Firefox 3.0 will no longer be supported, but Jaunty still is supported?
