Ubuntu :: Unable To Create New Folder On External USB Drives?

Oct 1, 2010

I have some USB drives that for some reason I cannot create folders or documents on. This pertains to all of my external USB drives. Works fine when I am in the Mac partition but not in Ubuntu. Another thing is that when I plug in an external drive, a nautilus window with the contents of the drive opens. Happens to all of my USB drives.

Ubuntu :: SMB Shares - Unable To Access External Drives

Dec 6, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 set up on my acer revo, this is connected to a wireless router via ethernet. Next door, is a pc that is running windows XP, and an original XBOX running XBMC. Those are connected via a crossover cable. The XP machine connects to the web wirelessly using my router, and the connections are bridged for XBMC's TV show scrappers. The idea is we use the revo for downloading as it consumes a relatively small amount of electricity. I have two external 1tb drives connected to the revo with Tv shows and movies, I would set up a network share so the XP machine could see them, and the xbox would be able to share the videos present.

I have installed samba, right clicked the drives in question and clicked the sharing options. I have ticked to allow guest access, and write access. This worked! I the shared the /home directory on the revos harddrive using exactly the same method. This worked. However I was no longer able to access the External drives. The UID has remained the same. I then tried unsharing /home, still no joy. Tried resharing /home Home now works, but still the externals don't.

Ubuntu One :: Unable To Create A Folder

Jun 9, 2011

I have the 11.04 version.I've tried to run Ubuntu One from the Launcher, but it doesn't do anything, so I have to go to the terminal and write sudo ubuntuone-control-panel-gtk Once it runs, the window opens, and where it should say File Sync is up-to-date it appears in red letters this error:

File Sync error. (org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process /usr/lib/ubuntuone-client/ubuntuone-syncdaemon exited with status 1), next to it I have the option Restart, but it doesn't do anything if I click it.

If I go to the section "Cloud Folders" it appears:

For what it's worth, my build host is Gentoo on 2.6.39, and I have the latest dd-rescue available. The USB disk is a PNY attache 4GB and works fine with any ISO's supported by unetbootin. The only other bare metal I have here is a netbook running Mepix, so I can't make use of solutions that start with "Boot your existing OpenSuse workstation

Server :: 2 Separate External Hard Drives With ESata To Minimize An Electrical Failure To The Drives?

Mar 26, 2011

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Ubuntu :: Create Folder',and Results In An Empty Folder Being Created On Desktop?

Oct 29, 2010

I have this nasty habit of refreshing desktop in a quick succession by right-clicking and selecting 'Refresh',on my XP system at office.(And,iam sure most of us do the same). With Ubuntu,if a right-click on desktop slowly and select 'align by...',it simulates the XP refresh action as explained above. But,if i perform the same action rapidly,it takes this first option from right-click context menu, which is 'Create Folder',and results in an empty folder being created on desktop.I tried double right-clicking and again it created an empty folder. Is there any workaround to handle this.I mean:Can the right-click context menu items be shuffled so that the 'Create Folder' option is moved from 1st place

Ubuntu :: Cannot Mount External USB Drives?

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine as dual boot using WUBI but on a seperate partition to Windows. Loving it so far, but i cannot get any external drives to mount - i've tried pen drives, camera memory cards and hard drives but nothing comes up.

I have just tried restarting with a pen drive plugged in, and it finally showed something in the computer folder - "memory stick drive" is shown (and my internal CD drive, which i'm not sure was there before.), but i still can't access it and when I try to unmount it gives me the message

Ubuntu :: Defragmenting USB External Hard Drives?

May 9, 2010

I currently use Ubuntu Lucid, and I'm curious if there is a program that I can install and run through it which will defragment an external USB hard drive.

My 500GB hard drive is used a lot, and I often add/remove stuff on and off of it, and I'm sure it's slowly starting to get a little fragmented with the amount of deletion and addition I do on it.

Does anybody know of a way to check and potentially defragment just it through linux? Or am I gonna have to just find a windows computer and do it there?

FYI, I don't care to nor know I really don't need to defragment my Ext4 drive to which Ubuntu's installed, its' just the external I am curious about.

Ubuntu :: Linking External Hard Drives ?

So me and my friend our on my network and we have done a bit of hacking and have managed to get music off of pandora and have it sort it by forlder /media/...../artist/album/song and it won't redownload a song that we have already downloaded (this is done by our code that we stripped from pithos and modified a bit) also we wrote a bash script that renames all of our files correctly and tags them with .mp3

I was wondering if I could link our two hard drives to make sure that we aren't both downloading the same songs. I am also having issues getting my external accessible on the network i have it formatted to use a FAT32 file system.

Ubuntu Servers :: Sharing External USB Drives?

May 1, 2011

Just moved my Mac Server to Ubuntu Server 10.10. I have two external USB drives that need to be shared on the network and be available on the internet for sensitive file transfer. What would be the most secure way to do it ? Some users are mobile and some not. The mobile users can access the network through a vpn running on that same server. The server is serving DNS and Proxy as well. I thought about creating a SAMBA share but the two disks are 1TB each. Then I went for proftpd but after reading some doc, it appears not very secure.

Ubuntu :: Syncing Two External Hard Drives

May 17, 2011

I have an external hard drive that contains some 600 GB of files and folders. I use this external drive frequently and so the files and folders in it change on a daily basis. I want to back up this drive on another external drive. What is the best way to sync these two external hard drives on a daily basis?I have been trying to sync them through the Grsync software. But I think either I am not choosing the right options or else Grsync is not the best/right software for my purpose because the second hard drive does not ever become completely identical to the first one. What am I doing wrong? Should I go with another software? If so, are there suggestions for a good one? Or am I doing something not right?

When I run Grsync, I choose the first external hd as my source and the second one as my destination. Then below that I check "Preserve time," "Preserve permissions," "Preserve owner," and "Preserve group." Below that, I also check "Verbose" and "Show transfer progress." Other options are all unchecked.Should I reconfigure these options?FYI, I frequently rename, edit, modify, or else completely delete files and folders in the primary hard drive. Hence, my need to back it up everyday so that the change would be replicated in the second hard drive.

Ubuntu :: Errors That Appear Randomly With All External Hard Drives

Nov 22, 2010

After some googling I found out that there might be a problem with highspeed external USB drives in Linux in general. Im using Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit and have now this problem I think. My external hard drive is working fine but when I type dmesg in a terminal I can see message errors that appear randomly with all my external hard drives. The problem is now, I have all my music on this drive and randomly I will have hangs while listening to music and the performance while tranferring data between my notebook and the USBs is poor. Anybody know a workaround for this problem or have the same experience or have more details about it? My principle USB device that I use is an iOmega 500 GB what I use on my Compaq 6730s. The other USB device is a Toshiba 1 TB. I tried to transfer the files into my homefolder to avoid this problem but there is no chance as on my notebook is no more space.

Usually, it says the device is busy, when I can't see how it possibly can be. When this happens I'll use "umount -l" or "umount -f" or sometimes "eject" but I'm still not happy, because at the back of my mind I'm worried about damaging the integrity of the device's filesystem. What's the CORRECT way to deal with this problem?

Ubuntu :: Duplicate Drives In Media Folder?

Sep 6, 2010

Ive been noticing lately that in my media folder, where I am able to see all the drives I have connected, it seems that each one is duplicated. For example, if I have a drive called "WD" theres another called "WD_", or "Lacie" and "Lacie_". And when I click on the ones with the "_", it says I don't not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'lacie'. But when I click the ones without the underscore, I get in. But heres the funny part, when using jdownloader, and i choose the folder where to save the files, I have to select the drive that has the underscore in it. Heres some pics and if you look at my info screenlet to the left, you will see that it shows the drives with the undercore.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mounted External Drives Keep Changing Designation

Mar 7, 2010

I have a headless 8.04 server with 2 USB drives attached. I'm trying to move everything off the 1.5TB drive onto a few 300GB drives (so I can then use LVM on the 1.5TB drive and move everything back onto LVs.)I check the drives using 'fdisk -l'. They show up as sdc1 and sdd1. I mount them and start a cp operation. When I run fdisk again, the drives are no longer sdc1 and sdd1. Now they are sde1 and sdf1 (and of course, they are no longer mounted.

What could be causing this and how do I fix it?I need to fix this ASAP because the 1.5 TB drive seems to be going bad. Every few seconds I hear a big "click" as though the head arms are smacking against a stop. (This is the 2nd brand new 1.5TB drive that has started doing this!)
