Im having some problems, when I plug in a USB drive or an external HDD to my computer it doesn't mount or show on the Desktop. It only shows up in "disk Utility".
I have tried ALT+F2 then typed "gconf-edit" went to Apps> Nautilus> desktop and check "Volumes Visible" but when I plug in anything in the USB it still doesn't show.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Maybe someone can give me a good lead.I just want to prevent certain users from accessing CD/DVD drives and all external drives. They should be able to mount their home directories and move around within the OS but they shouldn't be able to move data away from the PC. Any Clues?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 about a week or so ago and since the upgrade when I boot into Ubuntu (I am running a dual boot Ubuntu and win7) other HDD's and partitions often do not show up anywhere on my system. For example I have an ntfs partition that I store music on so I can access it on either windows or ubuntu, as well as other partitions. When this issue occurs even my dvd drive appears not to exist. I have to reboot my machine sometimes 4 or 5 times before the drives/partitions show again. I had no issue like this before running the upgrade or using earlier versions of Ubuntu.

I have two 320GB HDDs setup in hardware raid as shown below. But in gparted they are showing as two seperate drives. Why is this?

I am running the install on an old Dell 8400. My PC has an Intel RAID Controller built into the MB. I have 1 HDD (without RAID) (which is houses my OS install) and then I have 2 1TB drives (These are just NTFS formatted drives with binary files on them nothing more.) in a RAID 1 (Mirroring) Array. The Intel RAID Controller on Boot recognizes the Array as it always has (irrespective of which OS is installed) however, unlike Windows 7 (where I was able to install the Intel RAID controller driver) .Does anyone know of a resolution (which doesn't involve formatting and / or use of some other software RAID solution) - to get this working which my searches have not taken me too?
I have a load of partitioned hard drives and even though the are refrenced in fstab I still get Bookmark Icons and they are also visable in 'Computer'How do you remove these icon?I would also like the ones not refrenced in fstab to only be mountable via password - lucid seems to just mount when you click, I did change this as in another post but it also made USB keys need a password

Facts:1. When I login using GNOME, both volumes (MASSIVE & BACKUP) are listed on my desktop2. My /etc/fstab has long since been edited to reflect these drives3. Using XFCE: Although the volumes don't show on the desktop, they are indeed mounted. I can see them when performing a "df -h" as well as when opening "File System" and drilling to /media - they are both there. I can also access the contents of both volumes within "File System" (using Thunar).4. Using XFCE: I can access both volumes via command line5. Using XFCE: External drives are not affected. I have one external USB drive that shows and when I plug my Android phone, it too shows on the desktop.

I want to re-setup a raid array on some older drives using mdadm. That involved adding a single partition on 4 of my drives (3 older, 1 brand new - a replacement drive), using mdadm to create the array, etc. However, upon restarting the box, the 3 older drives do not show up as having partitions and hence mdadm cannot immediately start the array because 'there are not enough disks to start'.For example, if I do an ls command before I restart, I will see:

I want to change one of our poweredge 6450 servers over to Linux, specifically CentOS, however, I cannot seem to install the operating system. When I boot to setup, go through the first couple of pages and then go to the page that asks you where to install CentOS, no drives are shown in the list, and I can't continue. I'm guessing there are missing drivers for the SCSI controller or something along that lines, but I'm not sure, and I can't find any answers on Google either.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 12 for use with Amahi HDA. Before installing on the Hard drive I used the LIVE CD to test it out. While using the LIVE CD I could see all my HDD's. My file system, my 2nd Hard Drive, and my Raid 0 Configuration. (2 250GB drives) and could browse all my files on those drives.
After installing the full version on my hard drive, my RAID drives are showing up as seperate drives. I have a Asus P4P800 board using hte SATA raid. I know its FAKERaid and not a true hardware raid.
My goal is to restore the Raid in Fedora and make those drives active. However, i dont want to lose any of the data on those drives. To make sure I wasn't an idiot, i rebooted withthe LIVE CD again and verified that I could see the Raid Array.
I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine as dual boot using WUBI but on a seperate partition to Windows. Loving it so far, but i cannot get any external drives to mount - i've tried pen drives, camera memory cards and hard drives but nothing comes up.
I have just tried restarting with a pen drive plugged in, and it finally showed something in the computer folder - "memory stick drive" is shown (and my internal CD drive, which i'm not sure was there before.), but i still can't access it and when I try to unmount it gives me the message

I have an western digital elements external drive that is mounted on ubuntu 9.10. It mounts ok however when I go to a certain folder on the drive only some of the files show up. HOwever if I try to access it thru another program (xbmc file manager) all the files show up.
The files are there but I cannot view them. Also if I copy or move a file to that folder is dissappears but the file is still on the drive.
Any help. I also already hit show hidden files and nothing.
I currently use Ubuntu Lucid, and I'm curious if there is a program that I can install and run through it which will defragment an external USB hard drive.
My 500GB hard drive is used a lot, and I often add/remove stuff on and off of it, and I'm sure it's slowly starting to get a little fragmented with the amount of deletion and addition I do on it.
Does anybody know of a way to check and potentially defragment just it through linux? Or am I gonna have to just find a windows computer and do it there?
FYI, I don't care to nor know I really don't need to defragment my Ext4 drive to which Ubuntu's installed, its' just the external I am curious about.
Is it possible to show only mounted external volumes on the desktop. I try the method of uncheck /app/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible. But it hides both internal and external disk.

So me and my friend our on my network and we have done a bit of hacking and have managed to get music off of pandora and have it sort it by forlder /media/...../artist/album/song and it won't redownload a song that we have already downloaded (this is done by our code that we stripped from pithos and modified a bit) also we wrote a bash script that renames all of our files correctly and tags them with .mp3
I was wondering if I could link our two hard drives to make sure that we aren't both downloading the same songs. I am also having issues getting my external accessible on the network i have it formatted to use a FAT32 file system.
Just moved my Mac Server to Ubuntu Server 10.10. I have two external USB drives that need to be shared on the network and be available on the internet for sensitive file transfer. What would be the most secure way to do it ? Some users are mobile and some not. The mobile users can access the network through a vpn running on that same server. The server is serving DNS and Proxy as well. I thought about creating a SAMBA share but the two disks are 1TB each. Then I went for proftpd but after reading some doc, it appears not very secure.

I use this external drive frequently and so the files and folders in it change on a daily basis. I want to back up this drive on another external drive. What is the best way to sync these two external hard drives on a daily basis?I have been trying to sync them through the Grsync software. But I think either I am not choosing the right options or else Grsync is not the best/right software for my purpose because the second hard drive does not ever become completely identical to the first one. What am I doing wrong? Should I go with another software? If so, are there suggestions for a good one? Or am I doing something not right?
When I run Grsync, I choose the first external hd as my source and the second one as my destination.Then below that I check "Preserve time," "Preserve permissions," "Preserve owner," and "Preserve group." Below that, I also check "Verbose" and "Show transfer progress." Other options are all unchecked.Should I reconfigure these options?FYI, I frequently rename, edit, modify, or else completely delete files and folders in the primary hard drive. Hence, my need to back it up everyday so that the change would be replicated in the second hard drive.
I have an Ubuntu jaunty fileserver. I connect to the machine from time to time using the Nomachine client on windows.Everything is setup and working perfectly, except for one thing. When I acces the server remotely, I cannot access any external USB drives connected to it. The drive mounts fine, and is available when logged on locally to the machine, just not when logged in via Nomachine.

Works fine when I am in the Mac partition but not in Ubuntu. Another thing is that when I plug in an external drive, a nautilus window with the contents of the drive opens. Happens to all of my USB drives.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter some googling I found out that there might be a problem with highspeed external USB drives in Linux in general. Im using Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit and have now this problem I think. My external hard drive is working fine but when I type dmesg in a terminal I can see message errors that appear randomly with all my external hard drives. The problem is now, I have all my music on this drive and randomly I will have hangs while listening to music and the performance while tranferring data between my notebook and the USBs is poor. Anybody know a workaround for this problem or have the same experience or have more details about it? My principle USB device that I use is an iOmega 500 GB what I use on my Compaq 6730s. The other USB device is a Toshiba 1 TB. I tried to transfer the files into my homefolder to avoid this problem but there is no chance as on my notebook is no more space.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 set up on my acer revo, this is connected to a wireless router via ethernet. Next door, is a pc that is running windows XP, and an original XBOX running XBMC. Those are connected via a crossover cable. The XP machine connects to the web wirelessly using my router, and the connections are bridged for XBMC's TV show scrappers. The idea is we use the revo for downloading as it consumes a relatively small amount of electricity. I have two external 1tb drives connected to the revo with Tv shows and movies, I would set up a network share so the XP machine could see them, and the xbox would be able to share the videos present.
I have installed samba, right clicked the drives in question and clicked the sharing options. I have ticked to allow guest access, and write access. This worked! I the shared the /home directory on the revos harddrive using exactly the same method. This worked. However I was no longer able to access the External drives. The UID has remained the same. I then tried unsharing /home, still no joy. Tried resharing /home Home now works, but still the externals don't.
I have given up trying to get my internal broad com network driver to work. I was wondering if anyone knows which external network drivers would work really well? I'm currently on a Dell Vistro 1320 notebook. I want to purchase one that I know is reliable and will work "for sure".
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Zotac nettop. When I boot up normally, all my external USB drives are recognized and mounted properly in /media.
But when I boot up without Gnome (i.e. there's no monitor attached so Gnome doesn't start) they don't mount right: I see directories for them inside /media but normal users don't have access, and root only sees an empty directory.
I can't use my shares on external drives. I've tried to work with this and I really like Fedora but enough is enough. enough having to recover from multiple crashes attempting to get Nvidia drivers installed but I've given up on this. I haven't found a solution after HOURS and HOURS of searching. I was willing to wait for 13 to have 3d support on my Nvidia card but if I can't find a solution to this one
