Ubuntu :: SMB Shares - Unable To Access External Drives

Dec 6, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 set up on my acer revo, this is connected to a wireless router via ethernet. Next door, is a pc that is running windows XP, and an original XBOX running XBMC. Those are connected via a crossover cable. The XP machine connects to the web wirelessly using my router, and the connections are bridged for XBMC's TV show scrappers. The idea is we use the revo for downloading as it consumes a relatively small amount of electricity. I have two external 1tb drives connected to the revo with Tv shows and movies, I would set up a network share so the XP machine could see them, and the xbox would be able to share the videos present.

I have installed samba, right clicked the drives in question and clicked the sharing options. I have ticked to allow guest access, and write access. This worked! I the shared the /home directory on the revos harddrive using exactly the same method. This worked. However I was no longer able to access the External drives. The UID has remained the same. I then tried unsharing /home, still no joy. Tried resharing /home Home now works, but still the externals don't.

Fedora :: Can't Use Shares On External Drives

Apr 5, 2010

I can't use my shares on external drives. I've tried to work with this and I really like Fedora but enough is enough. enough having to recover from multiple crashes attempting to get Nvidia drivers installed but I've given up on this. I haven't found a solution after HOURS and HOURS of searching. I was willing to wait for 13 to have 3d support on my Nvidia card but if I can't find a solution to this one

I've been running a Samba server under RedHat 8 for five years without a hiccup. I want to cut over to a F10 box but cannot get shares accessible. smbclient attempts fail over NT password error. SELinux is disabled. Server is visible on the network. Users require no password access to shared data.

smb.conf follows:

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Access Some Nfs Shares

Jan 13, 2011

At, or around, the time of upgrading from Lucid to Maverick, shares on some of my nfs servers have become inaccessible:

Code:
peter@Desktop:~$ ls /net/10.2.1.21/
opt
peter@Desktop:~$ ls /net/10.2.1.21/opt/
sybhttpd

[Code]....

The share is hosted on a PopcornHour Network Media Tank, running a Linux system. With Lucid, I was able to access the share without any problems, both in Nautilus and from terminal. I can still access the share from other nfs clients - it's just ubuntu/Maverick which exhibits this problem. I have tried reverting to older firmware on the PopcornHour but that doesn't make any improvement.

Was there some significant change in nfs with the Maverick release, or have I misconfigured something?

Server :: Unable To Access Samba Shares

Jul 24, 2011

First off a little history of me lol. I'm not completely a Linux noobie, but I'm not the most advanced user either. With that said I have a few interesting problems with Samba.First off I can see the NetBios name under Windows Networking (Windows 7), however everytime I try to connect to it I get an Access Denied and/or "Incorrect Password/Username" error. I have gone into secpol.msc and changed the values that other posts have suggested. Both the server and the workstation are located under the same group, and I have used the smbpasswd -a <username>. The server is not configured to be a Primary Domain Controller so.. I'm lost. Infact my brain hurts from 3 days of this. I have posted my SMB.CONF file to see if that helps. Hum.. Maybe I'm just trying to access a file share that isn't there..

Ubuntu :: Unable To Create New Folder On External USB Drives?

Oct 1, 2010

I have some USB drives that for some reason I cannot create folders or documents on. This pertains to all of my external USB drives. Works fine when I am in the Mac partition but not in Ubuntu. Another thing is that when I plug in an external drive, a nautilus window with the contents of the drive opens. Happens to all of my USB drives.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access Network Shares From Nautilus File Manager

Oct 15, 2010

I'm running 64 bit Lucid on a HTPC that is networked with a Windows 7 64 bit laptop. Up until this morning, sharing media between these two worked fine. When I attempted to connect through Rhythmbox to play music, the computer couldn't find the files. I attempted to access the network through Nautilus and it was unable to mount the location. So I tried the Create Launcher command and created a link of the network on the desktop. I was prompted to login and it worked perfectly This has happened once before and the only way to fix it was to reinstall Ubuntu.I would very much like to avoid that if possible as the system is setup perfectly.

I wouldn't bother with the issue if it didn't prevent me from adding my music files to Rhythmbox. I have run findsmb as well as smbtree. Smbtree returned nothing and findsmb had a dotted line with nothing underneath. Nothing has been removed. I did install security updates this morning, but since it has happened before, I am more inclined to thing it is a bug or conflict somewhere.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Access Windows Shares On An All Lucid Network

Oct 26, 2010

I marked this solved when I discovered, after much reconfiguring, I had a faulty Netgear router - I just thought I'd save you reading all this to find the answer.I have 3 machines at home all running Lucid. All have Samba and shared folders but I can't access files on any machine from any other. This worked ok when they were running Karmic. I'm also unable to set up printing across the network from the two machines without local printers. The main machine has 2 printers connected via USB, the others are using WiFi. I'm not using firewalls on any machine.

Filesharing
On any machine I go to Places, Network and Nautilus opens at network:/// and shows me 'Windows Network' I open that and see the Workgroup folder which I open and see the folder is empty. (I did see the 3 machines before I completely removed Samba and re-installed a few minutes ago)

Printing
On one of the remote machines I go to Add Printer, Select Device, Network Printer, Windows Printer via Samba, Browse but I can't see the machine with the printers attached in the Workgroup. Another clue is that when I look at the printer properties, policies on the main machine all 3 boxes are ticked, Enabled, Accepting jobs (but it says Not published) and Shared.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Access SAMBA Shares Hosted On HOMESERVER?

Jan 6, 2011

I am traveling to the UK next week, and whilst I am there, I need to be able to access my SAMBA shares hosted on my HOMESERVER, via my laptop in england.

I have tried Hamachi before, which works fine on windows, but the linux version is awful, and hardly works. So I need an alternative. I did a bit of googling, but I don't know what "bridged" means when I found a OpenVPN tutorial

I was wondering if anyone could give me some information as to what I'll need, and what I'll need to do on both my homeserver and my laptop?

General :: Unable To Access Windows Shares Or Printer Over Network

Dec 19, 2009

I've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.

What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".

I have a few ubuntu servers which have samba shares on the network and for the most part have had little trouble with them. Recently we purchased a few iMac's for one of our deptartments and, while we're able to access the shares, all the files on them are read-only and we are unable to delete/modify files using the iMacs. This is not an issue with any of our windows machines (W2K, WinXP, Vista).

Server :: 2 Separate External Hard Drives With ESata To Minimize An Electrical Failure To The Drives?

Mar 26, 2011

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Ubuntu :: 10 Can't Access Windows Shares?

Sep 25, 2010

I am running Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and I currently have this computer and another Windows 7 PC connected together in the same workgroup. When I look at the Network on the Ubuntu File Browser, I can see the windows 7 pc there, but when I try to open it, I get the message Password Required - it wants a username, password and domain (the domain box is filled in with the workgroup name). Whatever set of credentials I try to input, the box just pops up again asking for password. Password protected sharing is disabled on the windows 7 pc and I have even tried disabling Windows firewall to no effect. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux and am therefore completely stuck - what I really want is to access a shared printer connected to the Windows 7 pc from the Linux machine.
