Ubuntu Servers :: Sharing External USB Drives?

May 1, 2011

Just moved my Mac Server to Ubuntu Server 10.10. I have two external USB drives that need to be shared on the network and be available on the internet for sensitive file transfer. What would be the most secure way to do it ? Some users are mobile and some not. The mobile users can access the network through a vpn running on that same server. The server is serving DNS and Proxy as well. I thought about creating a SAMBA share but the two disks are 1TB each. Then I went for proftpd but after reading some doc, it appears not very secure.

Ubuntu Servers :: File Sharing And Permission (Three Hard Drives)

Apr 17, 2010

Here's the background.
1x Windows Vista laptop (laptop1)
1x Windows 7 laptop (laptop2)
1x Mac laptop (laptop 3)

I am running Ubuntu server with 3 hard drives. I have Webmin installed. So far, I have the three laptops being able to connect to samba and accessing /home/insert_user_here. All laptop users have access to my /media/data2 (photographs, videos). That's all good. At first, I couldn't get other users but laptop 3 to access /media/sdb1, but I fixed that by changing permission to 755 so I guess everyone can access this. Atm, I want to only allow laptop #3 to connect to /media/sdd1 (be able to read/write/etc.) while laptop 1 and 2 can't even see the files. Also, laptop 1 and 2 can't seem to read and write through file share.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mounted External Drives Keep Changing Designation

Mar 7, 2010

I have a headless 8.04 server with 2 USB drives attached. I'm trying to move everything off the 1.5TB drive onto a few 300GB drives (so I can then use LVM on the 1.5TB drive and move everything back onto LVs.)I check the drives using 'fdisk -l'. They show up as sdc1 and sdd1. I mount them and start a cp operation.When I run fdisk again, the drives are no longer sdc1 and sdd1. Now they are sde1 and sdf1 (and of course, they are no longer mounted.

What could be causing this and how do I fix it?I need to fix this ASAP because the 1.5 TB drive seems to be going bad. Every few seconds I hear a big "click" as though the head arms are smacking against a stop. (This is the 2nd brand new 1.5TB drive that has started doing this!)

Server :: 2 Separate External Hard Drives With ESata To Minimize An Electrical Failure To The Drives?

Mar 26, 2011

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Ubuntu :: Sharing 2nd And 3rd Physical Drives?

Nov 10, 2010

I have a Dell XPS with Ubuntu 10.04 installed. I have a laptop dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I can see all shared folders on the Dell from my Windows partition in my laptop but can only see the shared folders in Home on the Dell from my Ubuntu partition in the laptop. My set up is as follows:

Dell:

root, home and swap are on the 1st 160g hard drive.
2nd 160g hard drive has only the one partition: /storage1
3rd hard drive, 500g has only one partition: /storage2

I cannot access any of the shares on either storage drive but I can see them from the ubuntu laptop. What I want to do is have access to those storage drives from my laptop. If I go into Nautilus, navigate to either storage drive, I cannot share them via right click, properties because I don't have root. Basically I am not sure how to go about this. There are a few folders in storage 1 and storage 2 that I want to be able to access from my Ubuntu partition in my laptop. This is one of the reasons I still have Windows on the other laptop partition but I really would like to dump it. Samba is installed and I tried giving permissions that way. It allowed me to add the drives but it had no effect.

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-1 OS Drives - Setting Up A Backup Procedure For The OS Drives

Jan 18, 2010

I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.

Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.

Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

Ubuntu :: External Backup HD Sharing With Win 7 And OS Files

Nov 18, 2010

I am a beginner to Ubuntu / linux. I plan to partition my laptop (HP pavilion) for Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu). Can I backup both Linux and Windows 7 files to a single external USB hard drive? (Obviously, they will be in separate directories). If yes, how do I do that? If not, what are my alternatives?

I assume Ubuntu will recognize a USB hard drive as an external flash drive, right? I also notice external SATA hard drive docking stations with USB interface are available, and I have not use them before. The devices takes internal SATA hard drive. If you have use them before, let me know how did you format it using Ubuntu or Windows7 while the drive is attached to the station.

Ubuntu :: External Hardrive - Sharing With Other Users On The Same Computer

Jan 17, 2010

I am having issues with sharing an external hard drive with other users on a computer. For example if I reboot and login with user A and then logout and login with user B, I am not able to mount the external hard drive. If I reboot and login with user B first, I can then access the external hard drive with user B but not user A. Is there a way that both users can use the drive without having to reboot every time?

I am assuming this is some sort of security issue. If I login with the second user and go to /mnt/external harddrive I get a permission error."You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "External Drive"." If I login with the first user and try to set the permission it doesn't give me the ability?

Debian :: Sharing External USB Drive To Everyone

Mar 4, 2016

I have a little ODROID C1+ ARM box with Debian Jesse installed on a SD card. I am trying to share an entire external USB NTFS drive to all clients (Windows 7, Android) on my network. I had this working until a few days ago when I reflashed an updated distro. Now I can't remember what black magic was involved. iptables is not installed and no firewall is active.I have installed Samba and Caja-share. I have edited the fstab

Code: Select all#4TB Seagate
UUID=*edited*
/media/odroid/Seagate404TB
ntfs
rw,users,permissions,auto
0 0

with the understanding that this would allow permissions to be assigned and saved for NTFS partitions. I then used chmod to assign everything on the drive to nobody:nogroup as I recalled this was necessary from when I last got it to work.SMB.config is currently set as

Code: Select allworkgroup = *edited*
[Seagate 4TB]
path = "/media/odroid/Seagate 4TB"
writable = yes
force user = nobody

with no other changes. The folder /media/odroid/Seagate 4TB has been created. I have right-clicked this folder and shared with Caja-share

Code: Select all[x] Share this folder
Share name: Seagate 4TB
[x] Allow others to create and delete files in this folder
[x] Guest access (for people without a user account)

but so far all I get in Windows when I try to access the share is a prompt for credentials, which is what I want to avoid.

Ubuntu :: Defragmenting USB External Hard Drives?

May 9, 2010

I currently use Ubuntu Lucid, and I'm curious if there is a program that I can install and run through it which will defragment an external USB hard drive.

My 500GB hard drive is used a lot, and I often add/remove stuff on and off of it, and I'm sure it's slowly starting to get a little fragmented with the amount of deletion and addition I do on it.

Does anybody know of a way to check and potentially defragment just it through linux? Or am I gonna have to just find a windows computer and do it there?

FYI, I don't care to nor know I really don't need to defragment my Ext4 drive to which Ubuntu's installed, its' just the external I am curious about.

Ubuntu :: Syncing Two External Hard Drives

May 17, 2011

I have an external hard drive that contains some 600 GB of files and folders. I use this external drive frequently and so the files and folders in it change on a daily basis. I want to back up this drive on another external drive. What is the best way to sync these two external hard drives on a daily basis?I have been trying to sync them through the Grsync software. But I think either I am not choosing the right options or else Grsync is not the best/right software for my purpose because the second hard drive does not ever become completely identical to the first one. What am I doing wrong? Should I go with another software? If so, are there suggestions for a good one? Or am I doing something not right?

When I run Grsync, I choose the first external hd as my source and the second one as my destination.Then below that I check "Preserve time," "Preserve permissions," "Preserve owner," and "Preserve group." Below that, I also check "Verbose" and "Show transfer progress." Other options are all unchecked.Should I reconfigure these options?FYI, I frequently rename, edit, modify, or else completely delete files and folders in the primary hard drive. Hence, my need to back it up everyday so that the change would be replicated in the second hard drive.

Fedora Networking :: Sharing An External Hard Drive Using Samba?

Aug 9, 2011

I installed Fedora 15 5 days ago after using debian-based distros for a few years, and until now I've had the habit of sharing many files (mostly multimedia) on my home network, except since I'm the only one using Linux, I have to do it using Samba.In Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Linux Mint, this worked like a charm.

Two things have changed this week: I switched to Fedora 15 like I said before, and I bought a new USB external HDD. I previously used a 500 GB Western Digital, and changed for a 1.5 TB SAMSUNG which is linked to my station via USB. The drive works well and I cp'd the 450 gigs of the ancient drive within the new one without a problem.

Ever since I managed to set up fedora and GNOME 3 as I would like it, I've been trying to setup the network sharing via Samba, and that's a genuine 4-day long headache now.Thing is, yesterday, it worked. After setting everything right, creating an automount of the external HDD in a maybe-too-much permissive folder, allowing Samba through the firewall, getting to know that buddy called SELinux I had never met before and which I struggled to tame ; after setting everything up, it worked seamlessly, I streamed music from the Windows PCs of my network and began watching a film.

Except I had a problem which had nothing to do with Linux: letting the USB drive plugged in on startup prevented the BIOS phase from going well, and my station was stuck on my motherboard splashscreen. To fix this, I had to disable the USB Legacy in my BIOS. Did the trick. Yesterday night, I rebooted like that, and everything was fine.This morning, Fedora wouldn't boot. Since the new BIOS parameters didn't switch the drive on on startup, fstab was trying to mount a drive which wasn't there, and thus crashed, switching to emergency mode.Had to remove the ftsab line concerning the USB drive for Fedora to boot again.

Alrite, that's fixed, I thought ; I just changed the fstab options adding noauto,user, etc. and I thought it would be ok, but it ain't.It's now been 3 hours without me finding any clue as to how to get this working.

IMO, the problem comes from the fact that Samba is missing the right to access the drive. Samba seems to be OK: from the Windows station I can see my Linux station on the network map, I can access it entering the Smbuser I created for this, and the "ext-hdd" dir is present (that's the alias I used in the Samba config files), but when I try to access it, Windows says it can't access it.

I'll try to add as many pieces of information as possible that might be useful:

SELinux config:

Code:
[norfen@norfens-station ~]$ getsebool -a | grep samba
samba_create_home_dirs --> on
samba_domain_controller --> on
samba_enable_home_dirs --> off
code....

General :: Sharing An Ext3/ext4 Partition On External Drive?

Aug 30, 2011

is there a way of sharing an ext3/ext4 formatted partition on an external USB drive between different users (uids) on different Linux machines without creating a group for this purpose, setting the group ownership of the partition to this group and adding each respective user to the group on every machine?This would mean that I need to have root privileges on every machine... which I may not have in some cases.I'm using the partition to store the code I'm developing on Linux and I would like the option to be safe... if possible.I could use a vfat partition but then I have no control of the rw rights + I cannot develop directly in the dir: I would always have to tar.gz the directory, extract, work, tar.gz, copy to the external drive.

Ubuntu :: SMB Shares - Unable To Access External Drives

Dec 6, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 set up on my acer revo, this is connected to a wireless router via ethernet. Next door, is a pc that is running windows XP, and an original XBOX running XBMC. Those are connected via a crossover cable. The XP machine connects to the web wirelessly using my router, and the connections are bridged for XBMC's TV show scrappers. The idea is we use the revo for downloading as it consumes a relatively small amount of electricity. I have two external 1tb drives connected to the revo with Tv shows and movies, I would set up a network share so the XP machine could see them, and the xbox would be able to share the videos present.

I have installed samba, right clicked the drives in question and clicked the sharing options. I have ticked to allow guest access, and write access. This worked! I the shared the /home directory on the revos harddrive using exactly the same method. This worked. However I was no longer able to access the External drives. The UID has remained the same. I then tried unsharing /home, still no joy. Tried resharing /home Home now works, but still the externals don't.
