Apr 30, 2010It appears that Lucid has done away with the gksu prompt that used to greet you when you try to mount a partition. Is there any known way of restoring this? I have a number of partitions which I would rather have protected by a password (even though I know that booting a live cd will give anyone access to any mountable partition, no questions asked). I've had a quick look in gconf and found nothing that looks like it would control this behaviour, but it's quite likely that I overlooked something.

Apr 1, 2011Is there a way to do this? I disabled the log in screen for my Ubuntu 10.10 for convenience with remote desktop (so the machine starts up right away and connect to vnc). But doing this means anybody at my house can just access my computer and application (brother's friends are a little curious) and they could easily access Keyring and grab all my passwords. So is there a way to require a password everytime an application is opened?

Apr 12, 2011I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my machine as dual boot using WUBI but on a seperate partition to Windows. Loving it so far, but i cannot get any external drives to mount - i've tried pen drives, camera memory cards and hard drives but nothing comes up.
I have just tried restarting with a pen drive plugged in, and it finally showed something in the computer folder - "memory stick drive" is shown (and my internal CD drive, which i'm not sure was there before.), but i still can't access it and when I try to unmount it gives me the message

Ubuntu :: External Drives Don't Mount Properly Without Gnome
Apr 18, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Zotac nettop. When I boot up normally, all my external USB drives are recognized and mounted properly in /media.
But when I boot up without Gnome (i.e. there's no monitor attached so Gnome doesn't start) they don't mount right: I see directories for them inside /media but normal users don't have access, and root only sees an empty directory.

Those disks are for the core-system and some file server related stuff.Beside the server i got two external LaCie boxes that contains 4x1tb disks each. The disks inside the boxes are RAID5, so the system sees every box as one whole "disk".Now to the problem. I just can�t get those "two" RAID cofigurations two be auto mounted at boot. I have tried to put them in /etc/fstab with a whole bunch of different options but nothing works. Dec 20, 2010How to mount multiple external HDD's. I'd like to link or mount the music, torrents, and general files from several external hard drives and apply permissions (in some cases I only want the mount or link to be read only).
My setup:
- Seagate Dockstar running Debian squeeze (it's headless so I don't have a gui running)
- Two external HDD's with one partition on each (250GB and 400GB)
What I'd like to accomplish:
1. Mount the external HDD's to /media/HDDs as read/write (this is already working using udev and autofs and it's available in samba)
2. I'd like the MUSIC directories on both external HDD's to show up under the same mount point. In other words I want the MUSIC folders (from both HDD's) to appear as one large library of music. And I only want this to be readonly. It will be used as the library for mpd and/or squeezebox.
3. Mount a directory used to download torrents to. I'll probably pick on HDD as the target for torrent dowloads. But let me know if you have any other ideas regarding this.
Since I have the first one done, how would I accomplish 2 & 3?

I can share folders from the internal drives fine but when I try to access an external drive from either machine I get "unable to Mount volume". Is it possible to mount the external drives across the network? If so, How?

Jun 5, 2010I have recently tried to switch from windows to kubuntu. So far nobody can help me on the problem that kubuntu keeps asking password (kdesudo - please input your password to mount this device) in order to mount anything with ntfs on it. This is despite i have made needed changes in order for this operation to be possible without rootilleges (recompiled ntfs-3g with internal fuse, set the setuid bit/setguid bit,ded user to disks, gave user permissions to mountpoint). I can do mount /dev/... and it works without sudo but the dolphin, or "removable media" thingie in system settings still will ask a password to mount anything with ntfs on it.
So, therefore a question arises. I can of course do all the mounting manually (automount on boot does not help since my external hard takes time to "boot up" when it's first accessed and that is when system boot takes 10 seconds instead of 1 second and starts complaining about "drive not ready, try manual mounting"So, i would like to have a simple gui something that can mount or dismount (run mount and umount for me effectively) removable or internal disks. Could someone advise some program that he uses? suppose there are plenty such around since the operation is very common...Maybe even a file managertead of dolphin)? Aug 2, 2010Running Ubuntu 10.04 I noticed my hard disc rumbling for longer than normal and louder. Not doing anything demanding to cause hard disk activity like this so I was suspicious so I checked my process list with 'top' command in the console terminal. At the top was mount.ntfs running. Eventually it stopped running after 20 seconds or so. At the time I have not been accessing NTFS filesystems, but I do have them. I have a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. In Ubuntu I've mounted the Windows main C drive and on the same hard disk a partitioned drive for sharing files between the OSs. I know mount.ntfs is a standard program but was it being run on my machine, instigated externally here? Was the running of mount.ntfs an attempt from outside to hack into Ubuntu and the mounted Windows areas of my machine via a backdoor connection or vulnerability? I've restarted my machine since then. Are there any logs I can check for malicious attempts to break in?

Nov 15, 2010I've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"

Mar 26, 2011I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

I can log in just fine with my ubuntu client, however when go to my Directory Server and tell it to require a password change on reset for any of my users, the ubuntu client doesn't require the user to reset their password. the reason I need this to work is so I can reset a users password from the Directory server and then have it use what I set it to for their next login attempt but then require them to set their own password. After days of searching I have only found out that it can be done by setting the option in Directory Server but Ubuntu 10.04 seems to just ignore the option. I am using the libnss-ldapd and libpam-ldapd packages on the Ubuntu client because the libnss-ldap and libpam-ldap didn't work at all, what am I missing?
