Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Cursors?

Jul 9, 2010

Whenever I want to change my cursor to something else, the "new" cursor only shows up when I'm doing certain things in certain apps. How do I make it so that my replacement, new cursor is OS-wide, instead of making little cameo appearances?

Ubuntu :: Getting Rid Of KDE Cursors And KDE Splash Screen?

May 3, 2010

Some time ago I installed KDE on my machine, though I use gnome as the default. (I rarely login on KDE) .Since then, when I login in my default gnome I get those futuristic KDE cursors, which I hate by the way. I've been trying to go back to my default cursors but I've had no success. I go to System -> Appearance -> Customize -> Pointer and then I select Default Pointer or even DMZ (white) I click on close twice and nothing happens. I've even removed the "oxygen-cursor-theme" using the package manager. How can I get my default mouse cursors back?

On the same note, before I get the login screen and after clicking on logout/restart I get a Kubuntu blue (splash?) screen, I'd prefer not to get this screen. how to get rid of this, too? (Getting rid of the cursors would be most important, but if I can get rid of this screen it'd be nice, too)

Ubuntu :: Some Cursors Broken / Resolve This?

Jan 27, 2011

After upgrade to 10.10 certain cursors became broken. Please see attached picture to get an idea what it looks like, I've circled the cursor. I had to take a pic with a camera, if I do a print screen the resulting image shows normal cursor. I've tried turning off desktop effects and different drivers for the video card. The cursor is broken for the following apps:
rdesktop - always when connected to the remote host
chrome/firefox - image zoom in/out
open office draw - when I try to resize a line.

Fedora :: Automated Mouse Cursors?

Mar 7, 2010

It there a way to enable automated mouse cursors in Fedora 12? About the only thing I miss from WinDoze is the animated hourglass cursor when I start an application by double-clicking its icon. With Fedora, I'll sometimes double-click an icon again, thinking that my first attempt didn't work, only to find that the program was loading and then I have two instances of the program.Yeah, it's a minor thing and, yeah, I can live without it, but it sure would be nice.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Monitor Resolution

I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years and always at the 1024 768 screen resolution.

I just finished installing version 10.04. It defaulted to 1280 1024.

I much prefer the 1024 768 because it is better for my older eyes, but when I attempt to change, the screen goes black for a minute and then stays at 1280 1024.

Since earlier versions of Ubuntu did it, this should also, but..

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change File Permissions

Dec 4, 2010

I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu Maverick, and have found a slight issue with file permissions. Before starting the installation I backed up all my files to an ext3 partition, then during the process I moved all of these files over to an NTFS partition that I am using as a joint storage location for both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7. Upon booting into my fresh Maverick install I found that all the files on my NTFS partition are now owned by root and I am unable to change the permissions using the conventional methods I am used to. I have tried using the GUI method through the properties of the folder, I've also tried using chown and chmod, but all to no avail... No matter how I make the change to the permissions, it will always revert back to root within seconds. who desperately wants full read/write access back to their data?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Screen Resolution

Sep 17, 2010

Just Installed the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook on my Toshiba Portege 7200 and the screen resolution is set to 800x600. The OS is not recognizing the fact the laptop can do 1024x768. I've been searching the net for a few hours to fix the problem and I'm not getting anywhere. The fix to the problem is to add the info below to the Xorg.conf file. This file does not seem to exsist on the latest version and if I create it manually it does not work.

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using values from the debconf database.
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg package.
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings. Here are ignored. If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Mouse Pointer After KDE Install?

May 15, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 for about three months now (I am a total greenhorn) . A few hours ago, I decided to add the KDE 4.4 desktop environment. I followed the procedure on this link. It was all in GUI, no terminal commands required. [URL]

Installed KDE and everything is fine except two problems.

1. The KDE mouse pointer has become default in GNOME and I just can't change it. Tried everything, changing theme, customising theme and even downloaded the "mouse pointer" app from Software Centre. Nothing works.

2. I am not able to upgrade anything using Kpackagekit. It keeps telling me I don't have authorisation, without asking for my password.

OpenSUSE :: Unable To Change Icons In 11.4

Jul 11, 2011

I just completed a clean install of 11.4 -- using KDE 4.6. It's absolutely a love-hate relationship so far after upgrading from 11.1 and KDE 3.5.With 11.1 it was incredibly easy to change my icons whether they were on the desktop, or in a Konqueror folder, or on the bar at the bottom of the screen. I simply right clicked on the icon, up would pop a configuration screen, I browsed to where the icons were stored, selected one, clicked "apply" and it was done.

But not in 11.4... For the icons I've dragged onto the bottom bar (e.g., YaST, Personal Settings, Dolphin, GIMP) if I right click on any of them and then click "icon settings" I get a screen where I should be able to see and change the icon, but instead I see a grayed-out gear, and all of them seem to be controlled by root. Under 11.1 and KDE 3.5 I could change these icons, but not with 11.4.

Another example... Under System Settings>File Association>inode>directory. Here you see a plain blue folder icon.Upon left clicking that icon I can then browse to my icons, choose one, click it, and then "apply," and the icon **does** change here in the "inode/directory" screen. But the change does **not** carry over to anywhere else. Under KDE 3.5 and 11.1 it would change every folder everywhere in my home directory. I would do the same thing in "file associations" with some applications (e.g. Word, Powerpoint, and Excel which I run with Crossover Office), and by changing the icon under "file associations" it would change every similar document in my home directory. But not in 11.4. In the first case with icons on my desktop I am unable to change them (seemingly locked to root). In the second case with icons I see in "file associations" I can change them in that screen, but the changes do not then apply globally.
