Programming :: Unable To Change Affinity
Apr 29, 2010
I am using glib version 1.2.10.I came to know from somewhere that "pthread_attr_setaffinity_np(3)" does not work on this version for POSIX threads. Following error was coming:(.text+0x112): undefined reference to `pthread_attr_setaffinity_np'collect2: ld returned 1 exit status. All I want to do is to run 2 threads on two different processors. I cannot change the glib version.

there is any possibility that I can set in this application an affinity so that the processor binds it to core 2 for instance. Is this possible to do in an application that runs than under root? Or is this just possible after the application started with using the taskset tool?

I have a question about using taskset. I am using Core 2 Quad box. I set the default affinity to CPU 0, by doing the following:
Edit: /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit
Addline: /bin/taskset -p 1 0
That has been working fine for me, but from searching the web, I found some suggestion about adding an additional line:
/bin/taskset -p 1 $$
What does that line do?
I checked the man page of taskset and some references for regular expression, and I couldn't find the explanation about the $ character. By the way, 0 for CPU 0, correct? I checked via htop and seemed to be correct...

Does anyone know if there is a way to "unset" processor affinity? So if you bind a process to just one proc, but then want to tell the OS to revert to normal behavior? Also, when you bind a process to a processor, can other processes use that process or does it have exclusive usage of that proc?

Am investigating processor affinity theory and practice, am somewhat surprised at the paucity of information on something that has been a part of many Windows Enterprise type applications for more than a decade and although I haven't investigated would assume is supported by big iron UNIX.What it is Processor Affinity is the *NIX terminology for "soft" assigning a process and its threads to a specific processor core. On multi-tasking machines and particularly those which run heavy loads it can be useful to "advise" the Scheduler to isolate/assign heavy loads to a core separate from other processes. I also have a specific situation where I would like to run more than one instance of a specific app, but cannot when sharing the same processing environment.
What I've found so far By default, any and all processes are assigned an affinity that permits running on any and all available processors. The taskset utility can be used to modify the affinity for any process, which means that once an application/service/process has been launched, only then can the affinity be modified. It seems that the RH platform may also have a utility called tuna which might provide some tuning capabilities in addition to setting affinity but does not seem to be in the SuSE repositories and I cannot find source. Is there a reference or utility that can launch an application with a specified processor affinity?

I have some questions.First, how can i obtain a process execution time ( after it terminated)??? Second, in a multi-core system like SMP how can i run different processes on different cores explicitly? i.e. how can i assign a process to a specific core?

I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. "(Process:286):Glib warning**:getpwuid:failed due to unknown user id (0)
P.S.- I am not able to see any options while the boot is going on

I was running my Acer V193 monitor at 1280x1024 resolution on KDE 4.3.1. Then after someone else used the computer the resolution changed to 1024x768 and I am unable to change it. Yast recognizes the monitor correctly, but when I run Sax2 it will not change it back to 1280x1024. It accepts that setting but when I start it again it is set at 1024x768. My xorg.conf indicates...

I just completed a clean install of 11.4 -- using KDE 4.6. It's absolutely a love-hate relationship so far after upgrading from 11.1 and KDE 3.5.With 11.1 it was incredibly easy to change my icons whether they were on the desktop, or in a Konqueror folder, or on the bar at the bottom of the screen. I simply right clicked on the icon, up would pop a configuration screen, I browsed to where the icons were stored, selected one, clicked "apply" and it was done.
But not in 11.4... For the icons I've dragged onto the bottom bar (e.g., YaST, Personal Settings, Dolphin, GIMP) if I right click on any of them and then click "icon settings" I get a screen where I should be able to see and change the icon, but instead I see a grayed-out gear, and all of them seem to be controlled by root. Under 11.1 and KDE 3.5 I could change these icons, but not with 11.4.
Another example... Under System Settings>File Association>inode>directory. Here you see a plain blue folder icon.Upon left clicking that icon I can then browse to my icons, choose one, click it, and then "apply," and the icon **does** change here in the "inode/directory" screen. But the change does **not** carry over to anywhere else. Under KDE 3.5 and 11.1 it would change every folder everywhere in my home directory. I would do the same thing in "file associations" with some applications (e.g. Word, Powerpoint, and Excel which I run with Crossover Office), and by changing the icon under "file associations" it would change every similar document in my home directory. But not in 11.4. In the first case with icons on my desktop I am unable to change them (seemingly locked to root). In the second case with icons I see in "file associations" I can change them in that screen, but the changes do not then apply globally.

I tried changing the GLtext following various threads [URL] and others, but i cannot do it. The text insist on staying the same. It displays my kernel. My OS is Ubuntu 10.10. Does anybody have a clue? It has become really frustrating... In older versions of Ubuntu I could easily change it following the procedure offered by these threads.

I installed debian 8 on a usb drive using this guide. I used a debian 8.2 64-bit image with mate. It has all worked as I wanted it to. However recently I needed to change the PATH variable, and create another environment variable. I have not been able to do neither. What I have tryed (from google):
1. adding "export PATH=$PATH:/xxxx/" to etc/profile or to /home/user/.profile
2. adding ":/xxxx/" to a point in /etc/profile where the PATH variable is set
3. creating a script in /etc/profile.d which run "export PATH=$PATH:/xxxx/"
(where xxxx is the the location i want to add)

I'm new here as I'm new to openSUSE. Having used Mandriva 2006 for years, I've gotten used to KDE3, and I'm still using it. I've got a few problems right now, but one of the most annoying is this: I changed my Yakuake skin (I can't remember the name of the skin), and Yakuake became really slow. It can take even ten seconds for it to scroll down, which to me is a bit too much. The thing is, I can't change the skin back. Here's what I tried to do:
1. Look for the right file and set the skin from there. (Didn't work)
2. Delete the skin file. (Nope.)
3. Reinstall yakuake. (Nope, same skin.)
Now okay kde4-yakuake is an option. However I feel like this is something I should be able to solve. My attempts this far have been a bit foolish, but usually something works.
Here's a screenshot: [URL]..

I've a little trouble: I reinstalled on my notebook OpenSUSE 11.3 yesterday and I'm unable to change the hostname. I modified it, but when I type on terminal
Code:
uname -a
it doesn't give the right answer but returns
Code:
host
I don't know where I wrong because I did this action many times with Opensuse 11.1 and 11.3 without any problem.

I have been using Ubuntu for a couple of years and always at the 1024 768 screen resolution.
I just finished installing version 10.04. It defaulted to 1280 1024.
I much prefer the 1024 768 because it is better for my older eyes, but when I attempt to change, the screen goes black for a minute and then stays at 1280 1024.
Since earlier versions of Ubuntu did it, this should also, but..

Whenever I change themes to the azenis theme in ubuntu 10.04 the cursor will not change themes properly for example it will change to the proper cursor when I hover over a close button (I'm using emerald themes too) when hovering in certain programs (like firefox) and when moving icons. I have tried to change the theme to another one reboot to hopefully "reset" the mouse then change back but it didn't work. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 64 bit.

After having been seduced by Windows 7 I have finally come back to Ubuntu (10.04), imagine my shock at having found that the Dev's for god only knows what reason have removed the ability to change the GDM login theme. I have downloaded a couple of themes from Gnome look and want to install / apply the theme, ideally with an app with a GUI interface.

I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu Maverick, and have found a slight issue with file permissions. Before starting the installation I backed up all my files to an ext3 partition, then during the process I moved all of these files over to an NTFS partition that I am using as a joint storage location for both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7. Upon booting into my fresh Maverick install I found that all the files on my NTFS partition are now owned by root and I am unable to change the permissions using the conventional methods I am used to. I have tried using the GUI method through the properties of the folder, I've also tried using chown and chmod, but all to no avail... No matter how I make the change to the permissions, it will always revert back to root within seconds. who desperately wants full read/write access back to their data?

Just Installed the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook on my Toshiba Portege 7200 and the screen resolution is set to 800x600. The OS is not recognizing the fact the laptop can do 1024x768. I've been searching the net for a few hours to fix the problem and I'm not getting anywhere. The fix to the problem is to add the info below to the Xorg.conf file. This file does not seem to exsist on the latest version and if I create it manually it does not work.
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using values from the debconf database.
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg package.
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings. Here are ignored. If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
