Jul 8, 2010So, I had a system failure earlier today. I decide to reinstall xubuntu 9.10 on my computer. Everything goes fine and then when I start getting things set the way I want them, I find that for some odd reason, I can not change my wallpaper in xfce4. Added to that, when I click the right mouse button, nothing happens(yes I have it checked to open the application menu) and when I click in the left mouse button and drag(usually a frame appears), nothing happens.

Jan 28, 2010I have a Dell XPS M1530 which has 4GB of RAM and Nvidia graphics card. I have problem with Ubuntu 9.10 (had the same problem with previous version). If I change the desktop wallpaper from System > Preference > Appearance it seems to freeze everything momentarily (15-30 seconds). Then you see the jagged transition happen when wallpaper changes from current to new.
I tried with wallpaper-tray applet and it has the same affect. I have NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.09-pkg1 installed for Nvidia and all the effects enabled. They don't run slow at all...Like when I move the window, the window frame is fluid and flows beautifully. Is there a way I can make the wallpaper issue go away? Or disable the transition effect on wallpaper change?

I can use display from iagemagick like so display -window root -geometry '-0-0' -resize '1920x1080>' IMG.png But cannot use it since it does not display on the right root window -- pseudo transparency in urxvt shows the wrong image as shown here. Ideally, I would like to resize any image bigger than my display. Does anyone know of a too that can do the following: Resize the image if it is bigger than some size (aka the display size). Apr 21, 2010I switched our main fileserver to new hardware running RHEL 4 Update 8 yesterday. Post the switch my users are finding that the text in the boxes on taskbars at the bottom of their desktop screens no longer truncates but spills over onto that of other boxes, making them extremely hard to decipher.
All our desktops are RHEL 4.8 too. Also, I'm only able to select PNGs as desktop wallpaper - JPEG backgrounds just appear as plain white when selected(!) Has anyone seen this before and knows of a fix?

But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. Apr 3, 2011I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

Jul 28, 2011Recently I installed ubuntu 10 on my machine. Installed using windows installer and it is installed in one of the windows drive. It didnt asked me for root password, so i used sudo -i to become a root user.
now when i was trying to execute a file named all.bash [URL].. using ./all.bash but it says permission denied error. I saw that the file have only read and write permission. I tried to change the permission by using chmod u+rx all.bash but it does nothing. Is there any way to change the permissions.

I just finished installing version 10.04. It defaulted to 1280 1024.
I much prefer the 1024 768 because it is better for my older eyes, but when I attempt to change, the screen goes black for a minute and then stays at 1280 1024.

May 16, 2010Whenever I change themes to the azenis theme in ubuntu 10.04 the cursor will not change themes properly for example it will change to the proper cursor when I hover over a close button (I'm using emerald themes too) when hovering in certain programs (like firefox) and when moving icons. I have tried to change the theme to another one reboot to hopefully "reset" the mouse then change back but it didn't work. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 64 bit.

Dec 4, 2010I recently did a fresh install of Ubuntu Maverick, and have found a slight issue with file permissions. Before starting the installation I backed up all my files to an ext3 partition, then during the process I moved all of these files over to an NTFS partition that I am using as a joint storage location for both Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7. Upon booting into my fresh Maverick install I found that all the files on my NTFS partition are now owned by root and I am unable to change the permissions using the conventional methods I am used to. I have tried using the GUI method through the properties of the folder, I've also tried using chown and chmod, but all to no avail... No matter how I make the change to the permissions, it will always revert back to root within seconds. who desperately wants full read/write access back to their data?
