i have been using linux for a while now with full functionality. i was running two x servers on separate monitors with nvidia drivers but i logged on earlier and couldn't reconfigure the x servers so i reinstalled the drivers and now when i boot up my computer it makes it to the ubuntu logo and then goes black. it used to have strange patterns on it after the logo but now its just black everytime.

It boots directly onto the LCD, but the resolution is 800x600 by default, the only other option is 640x480. I'm assuming its using the VESA drivers for the graphics. I've managed to temporarily fix the resolution to 1024x768 by running the following in terminal for every session:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI noticed my Firefox loading rather slow (took around 5 - 7 seconds to load and navigate pages, even google, and it would sometimes become unresponsive), I thought it may have been a addon problem, so I opened up a new Firefox profile with no addons but the browser crashed upon loading the certain page I was trying to view, and I figured I'd look into it later and use Chromium for a while (I'll be open, I was trying to watch an pron tube site, and when your, you know, you don't really feel like stopping to go technical and try to fix it or whatever), but Chromium said that the flash player wasn't installed. I thought it was kinda odd, but then again I didn't want to go technical and thought maybe since mozilla firefoxs engine loaded the flash, I'd use Mozilla Seamonkey which uses the same gecko engine. The flash wasn't working either on there.
I tried looking up to see if there was a 64bit deb package for flash, but they didn't have it, and I seen someone mention that doing the 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades it, so I did that, and it also said it installed some extra packages when doing it, but I figured it was just that getlibs grabbing the extra dependencies and went along with installing them (after all there shouldnt be much to lose since its from the repository, right?)
I restarted the computer to give the updates a chance to take effect (it didn't mention to restart, but I thought I'd go ahead and do it anyways to ensure it updated okay).
This is where the booting problem comes in: When my laptop restarted, the loading was going across very slowly (I have ubuntu studio installed through regular ubuntu, so it was showing the text filling up), normally it would just fill a little bit of the first "U" in "Ubuntu Studio" and then be done quickly, but now it goes slowly all the way, and when it fills "Ubuntu Studio", it stills stays there, it doesn't load on.

I have no clue what to do now, and I wanted to ask for help before I go trying myself editing the command line boot process.
When I turn on the computer, the Grub2 shows up and asks me to choose what OS to start. And from today on, whatever I choose, I end up with nothing. When Linux (Ubuntu) is chosen, then the blinking logo is shown (depicting it's loading) and after some time I can only see a black screen. In case when Windows is chosen, the black screen appears immediately. Kive cd works fine but don't know what I could do with it. A week ago I changed a booting order in my BIOS, so that GRUB2 is loading very fast now. Then I also chose: sudo dkpg-reconfigure grub-pc and selected the disk that had my boot partition. For a week or so it worked fine.

I'm already starting X manually from /etc/event.d/tty7, but the X started from gdm is the one I see on the screen. I don't have a keyboard, so I can't switch to the console with the right X after startup. Is the only option to deinstall gdm, or is there a way to make it not start?

I've found mentions of this problem in Lucid Lynx, but this is a recent development for my system, since I've been running Ubuntu since Gutsy Gibbon.On start up my gdm theme/icons appear for a second, but by the time I've entered my keyring password the theme reverts to the system default (what Synaptic package manager looks like). It also does not load my start up programs Gnome-Do and Screenlets. My theme only appears if I go into the Appearances menu, and Gnome-Do only starts if I pick it from the Accessories menu (and I've gone into Gnome-Do's preferences and clicked on "start GNOME-DO at login"). About once in a blue moon it will load everything correctly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am still new to Ubuntu but I am having a problem when booting into Ubuntu 10.10. When I turn on the computer, after a few screens go by I see a boot manager giving me the option of:
1: Earlier Versions of Windows
2: Windows 7
3: Ubuntu
All OSes are working with no trouble. But when I try to boot into Ubuntu, I get another boot screen that states:
1: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-28-generic
2: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-28-generic (recovery mode)
3: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
4: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode)
5: Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2)
When I choose 1 or 3, quite often it doesn't load up the startup GUI, it loads up some command line crap that I don't understand yet, where I type in reboot until I finally get Ubuntu loaded, this happens several times then finally works to the point I can log in. What could be going on, my install is inside Windows 7, not a full install if that matters. What is the difference between line 1 and 3?
I cannot figure how to make a program start-up when Ubuntu boots. I want the "sudo firestarter" command to run so the firestarter icon appears in the panel.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've running ubuntu 11.04 on my samsung 900x3A notebook and have a problem using the touchpad: I've configured my touchpad using "GPointing device settings", but everytime I reboot my system I've to start "GPointing device settings" manually to apply the settings for the current session. Is there a way to do this automatically?
Secondly I've the following problem: I cannot use "click and move" with my touchpad. For example, when I try to move a window around: Normally one would click the left button, hold it and move the window via touchpad. But every time I click the left button, any other movement with my touchpad is disabled. Is there a way around this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedOut of nowhere Ubuntu (intrepid, I believe) has stopped loading for me. When it attempts to load gdm the screen starts flashing at the splash screen and then eventually dumps me to the terminal. From there I can login without any problems but can not get the GUI to load.
When I run sudo gdm-binary it does the flashing splash screen again and then spits out the error message: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found. Then a few warnings about longest graphic displayed 2.5xxx seconds
I tried running sudo dpkg-recondifigure gdm and relaunch gdm as above and it did the same thing.
I was not able to successfully connect to my wireless network through the terminal to try to update in the hopes of that fixing the problem. Perhaps someone can give me instructions on how? (I have tried but can not figure out how to initialize wlan0).
Or, is there something I can do from my installation CD?

I just installed Opensuse 11.2, and have come across the following error upon bootup: the display manager screen refuses to load, unless I type STARTX at the cli line. the error messages read: failed services in runlevel 5 /etc/init.d/xdm.orig start returned 6 earlyxdm postfix Further, I am unable to activate the xdm service under Yast. Has anyone else run across this error? Not sure how to resolve.

I just installed slackware-current from today's update (mirrored from ftp.slackware.com). The program "qtconfig" seems to have saved my changes to "~/.config/Trolltech.conf". However, after restarting qtconfig all options become the defaults.
I verified this in both the C locale and a UTF-8 locale.
Another computer of mine has a -current system from a few months ago and doesn't have this problem.
I am running 64bit version of Fedora 12. After I logout or restart, I lose compiz function and I have to manually activate by "applications" - "system tools" and compusion fusion icon click.
Is there a way to automatically start each time?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?
PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour

i know this bug has been reported earlier and i found quite a few results in google.i even found one result where the problem was fixed and updated in an additional opensuse repository -> Additional package repositories - openSUSE the repository with the fix is the following -> Index of /repositories/server:/php/openSUSE_11.4 so ... i added this repository via YAST to the repositories in my system without any problems but whenever i do a system update via YAST i don't receive new fixes and patches from the newly added repository!
if i directly browse to the /i586 folder in the repository i see all the PHP updates with version 5.3.7 and the latest updates were done 19 aug 2011 Index of /repositories/server:/php/openSUSE_11.4/i586 but my system still has PHP version 5.3.5 installed and somehow doesn't want to update from the newly added repository for the apache php modules so ... i just double checked and the repository is enabled in YAST ... but I still don't receive updates from there i would like to update to the new apache php modules, to get rid of that php '/usr/lib/php5/extensions/intl.so' warning, but somehow that doesn't seem to work
I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.
