Feb 2, 2010I cannot figure how to make a program start-up when Ubuntu boots. I want the "sudo firestarter" command to run so the firestarter icon appears in the panel.

Jan 6, 2011I need to add a program to my startup menu (webserver which needs sudo for port80). I follow their directions, but it breaks the program and no pages are served. I will not be home to guide wife and kids every time they boot the machine to sudo start the program. How do you start a program at boot, as root or sudo start.

Basically I have a game, called Age of Conquest III, which I got working just fine, but it won't save any setup or game files unless I run it as sudo from the terminal, example in terminal: Sudo /bin/sh "/opt/age_of_conquest_iii/Age of Conquest III" Now I created a short cut with the command being just: /bin/sh "/opt/age_of_conquest_iii/Age of Conquest III"
What command do I put in my shortcut command to get it to open up like in my terminal command? I tried: Sudo /bin/sh "/opt/age_of_conquest_iii/Age of Conquest III" but this won't open anything.

Jul 12, 2011I'm booting from the bash command line, and I was wondering if there is a way to make it to where when 'gdm' is called it is always called as if it had root permissions. Just so I don't always have to type 'sudo gdm' and enter a password (which would require entering a password twice, since the gdm splash screen also asks for a password.)

Jun 12, 2011i am trying to make it so that my laptop that has crashed can run Ubuntu. It lacks an optical drive (CD Player) so i am trying to use a USB. After i downloaded the ISO, and then use the extractor like it says here I then went into the flash drive, went to [usb-creator.exe] The problem is that when i try to do this (make the USB the Startup disk) the iso refuses to load on the application, its hard to explain, but here's a picture. Even when i go to click other, browse for the ISO, and open that one, it still doesn't work.

Sep 29, 2010I am using a headless server with virtualbox installed on it. A second box is a LAMP server from which I have phpvirtualbox installed to give me a remote connection to the headless server. In order to get a connection made between the 2 boxes I need to start a program called vboxwebsrv, this being on the headless box. I therefore need to ssh into the server and startup the program. What I'd like to do is have this program launch on startup, and the folks at phpvirtualbox has a sample script available that will do that. Unfortunately the script uses a su command, not sudo. Since I am using Ubuntu, the su command doesn't work, but using sudo requires a password response. How do I deal with this?

What I currently do is: sudo /usr/bin/vboxwebsrv -b --logfile /dev/null >/dev/null.(The script file sets up the path earlier on).What I don't want to do is have any interaction during startup, and frankly, I can't see how to avoid the password thing.

Feb 17, 2011I have to use pppoe because my ISP uses service names, and as far as I know the only program which lets me input a service name is pppoe (inside the pppoe.conf file). Networkmanager is buggy because it tends to disappear from the panel periodically and, worse, it doesn't reconnect (although the option is selected, it does reconnect only once).
So, for peace of mind I open a superuser terminal and enter "pppoe-start" and "pppoe-stop" to have everything I want (reconnects automatically, etc.). Now the question is: how can I have pppoe-start run at startup, automatically, without entering superuser mode, and without having a terminal open for this? Using Debian Testing (Wheezy).

Jan 22, 2010When I turn on the computer, the Grub2 shows up and asks me to choose what OS to start. And from today on, whatever I choose, I end up with nothing. When Linux (Ubuntu) is chosen, then the blinking logo is shown (depicting it's loading) and after some time I can only see a black screen. In case when Windows is chosen, the black screen appears immediately. Kive cd works fine but don't know what I could do with it. A week ago I changed a booting order in my BIOS, so that GRUB2 is loading very fast now. Then I also chose: sudo dkpg-reconfigure grub-pc and selected the disk that had my boot partition. For a week or so it worked fine.

Ubuntu :: Make Gdm Not Load On Startup?
May 8, 2011I edited some file in /etc and it stopped loading, but after upgrading to natty it loads again. I'm already starting X manually from /etc/event.d/tty7, but the X started from gdm is the one I see on the screen. I don't have a keyboard, so I can't switch to the console with the right X after startup. Is the only option to deinstall gdm, or is there a way to make it not start?

Working directories for openvpn on debian 8 are:
/etc/openvpn
/usr/sbin/openvpn
To add sudo capability to a guest account, run this with your admin account:

then add the line, with your guest username substituted:

tada! guest account now runs only openvpn.

Mar 16, 2011I've found mentions of this problem in Lucid Lynx, but this is a recent development for my system, since I've been running Ubuntu since Gutsy Gibbon.On start up my gdm theme/icons appear for a second, but by the time I've entered my keyring password the theme reverts to the system default (what Synaptic package manager looks like). It also does not load my start up programs Gnome-Do and Screenlets. My theme only appears if I go into the Appearances menu, and Gnome-Do only starts if I pick it from the Accessories menu (and I've gone into Gnome-Do's preferences and clicked on "start GNOME-DO at login"). About once in a blue moon it will load everything correctly.

May 2, 2011I am still new to Ubuntu but I am having a problem when booting into Ubuntu 10.10. When I turn on the computer, after a few screens go by I see a boot manager giving me the option of:
1: Earlier Versions of Windows
2: Windows 7
3: Ubuntu
All OSes are working with no trouble. But when I try to boot into Ubuntu, I get another boot screen that states:
1: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-28-generic
2: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-28-generic (recovery mode)
3: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic
4: Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode)
5: Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2)
When I choose 1 or 3, quite often it doesn't load up the startup GUI, it loads up some command line crap that I don't understand yet, where I type in reboot until I finally get Ubuntu loaded, this happens several times then finally works to the point I can log in. What could be going on, my install is inside Windows 7, not a full install if that matters. What is the difference between line 1 and 3?

Mar 14, 2011I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on my HP Compaq Presario CQ60. Unfortunately the screen is busted & I'm using an external LCD. It boots directly onto the LCD, but the resolution is 800x600 by default, the only other option is 640x480. I'm assuming its using the VESA drivers for the graphics. I've managed to temporarily fix the resolution to 1024x768 by running the following in terminal for every session:
