I believe I successfully installed Debian onto my external hard drive, but when I try to boot to it from grub I get "unrecognized device string". My HD install of Ubuntu works correctly. From a running system I get:

I have a new Giada cube with no hard drive, so my plan is to simply run a Linux/MythTV distro called MythDora from a Patriot 8GB USB stick (this Giada does not PXE boot). I am having trouble figuring out exactly how to make this work. Yesterday, although I have forgotten exactly how, I was able to put a MythDora Live image on the stick and boot up. I went through the initial setup, and then, when I was all done, I rebooted, and..it started all over again...as if I was doing it for the first time. So...What do I need to do to create a proper bootable USB stick?What ISO image should I use? The full DVD? Or the Live ISO? or the Network image?Do I need to partition the stick and load the O/S from one small partition, transferring the installation to another larger one?What utility should I use to create the bootable stick? unetbootin? or similar?Do I have to do anything special to make my O/S and configuration changes persistent on the USB stick?

Anyone aware of any issues i might encounter? Is lilo ok booting from one drive to another? Is it ok to just install lilo on the mbr of /dev/hda to boot a distro on /dev/hdb?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI seem to have a complex issue on my hands that i can't figure out. first, i wasn't able to get access to my LVM'd hard drives via SSH without half of the content being missing or locked out (read-only or unable to open at all). the problem then went up to being unable to boot up - all i got was a long slew of [100.1234] ata1.00: error messages (they eventually DO stop once they get to around 998.234234 or whatever, and then i can log in and it seems to be "stable").
Part way through this rebooting ordeal i realized / decided to make power-on-self-test stop and wait if it finds errors (via bios) - that showed me that my 750G SATA drive is "bad" and my two (older) 120G & 250G IDE drives are "ok". i then unplugged the SATA drive, rebooted, and didn't see those error messages. however, my LVM was still obviously not coming together (since LVM was made up of the 120G, 250G, and 750G drives)
So, now it seems:
a) I can't boot smoothly with all drives in place
b) I can't do anything with lvm if i remove the 750G sata
c) With all drives hooked up, i can wait 10mins for the errors to go away, but STILL can't do anything with lvm
d) I need to recover the lvm stuff so that i can nicely migrate ALL those files (1.1TB of it) onto a new 1.5TB drive and do away with lvm
This is all running ubuntu 7.10 server edition (32-bit version on a 64-bit computer). i DID post a question on the ubuntu forum as well but so far got no replies at all.

I stumbled onto an old FREESPIRE disk my bro sent me several years back -- and tried installing it on a Sony Vaio PCG FRV 28 I had crashed a few years back. The Sony bios is still aboard, but old enough to not have USB "booting" as part of the boot menu. I don't even know if one can easily hack into the BIOS on an old sony Vaio but changing the BIOS would solve lot of problems.
Does anyone have any ideas or certain knowledge on rewriting or modifying the Master Boot Code or an idea on making my USB [with Ubuntu or any other Linux implementation visible] and bootable to the bios on powerup?
I have a mini ITX computer that runs a software that I have been trying to clone to another hard drive as back up. When I do clone it, it is the exact same copy down to every byte. When I try to boot from the cloned hard drive, it starts booting, then displays some text:
Then is says some of the files are not found including a encryption signer key not found.
I do no know the next step I need to take. Is this becasue it is running off a different hard drive? I do not understand a bzImage too well, but does it have anything to do with that file?
I just installed Debian onto a PowerPC G4 Tower with two hard drives. I left OS X on one of the drives and reformatted and installed Debian on the other, using the installer from the 60Mb ISO from the Debian website.
The installation had no issues and it starts yaboot and Debian no problem.
After about 2 minutes of the booting up process, it starts to output this, every five seconds:
While this happens, other things still continue load and it outputs occasional messages and even gets to "Debian Login:" where if you type really quickly and hit enter, it takes it and prompts for "Password:" right after the next round of the above messages.
I have not been able to completely log in yet.
I can start up into the shell as root with "Linux single" with no problems.
I think this might have something to do with the second Mac OS Formatted Hard drive. I have considered unplugging that drive and testing it that way, but I am looking for a solution to turn off whatever script is running that every five seconds and failing, regardless of what it is trying to do.
I am running a hp dv701175nr laptop and am booting ubuntu 11.04 from a usb flash drive. I can not seem to find my internal drive that has windows 7 stored on it. I tried to mount it but it give me this error:

I can't use this operating system if I can't access my windows 7 drive and I really want to use this OS .
EDIT: Okay, so I think I have found my problem, but I don't know how to fix it, there are differences in my mtab and fstab commands, I will post what they say in a second, but I do not know how or what I need to do to change and make the settings right

It is getting stuck at the stage where the image starts loading. In short the vmlinux.img file is being copied properly to nfsroot but the image is not loading.

I also said to put the MBR (or maybe it's the grub stuff) on that partition with F11. I used ext3 as my Linux file system type.
But when I boot from that drive or even boot normally, I come back to Windows automatically.
I don't want to mess with my C: drive at all plus I want to keep most of that M: drive away from Linux.
I have two 3 hard drives, one with Linux Mint, one with Fedora, one with Windows. For some reason, I can only choose Mint or Windows in the menu at the start. Also, when I boot on mint, I see my hard drive with Windows:
320 GB Hard Drive: 320 GB Filesystem.
But for the hard drive with Fedora I only see:
1.0 TB Hard Drive: 524 MB Filesystem.
From Mint I can go in this filesystem and there is a folder name Grub, can I take the info there and paste it into Mint's grub ? If so, how ?

I have a micro-atx box with a CF reader that pretends it's an IDE HDD. You can boot off this thing and this is intended to be a "diskless" system. The vendor claims only 17 watts when at rest.My plan is that this will be a printer & backup server but the backup drive will be a USB drive that will only be turned on when needed so I want the box run without a HDD if possible.

I have been having trouble with my latest LinuxMCE core server (based on Kubuntu 8.10). It will load the OS with no problems on the IDE drive, unless I have another, or multiple, hard drive installed. It doesn't matter if I loaded onto the IDE or SATA drives, it gives me the "ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid....does not exist. Dropping to shell." I thought it might be the loader, as just to get it into 'live' mode I need to enter 'pci=nomsi'. I tried to load Fedora (to try AMAHI), but it just sent me into a grub loop. If I try to have the second disk installed while running the install, it gets frozen at the busybox. The whole reason for going to this combo of system and OS was to be able to have multiple pci/e cards for security, TV tuning, etc, and have a minimum of 8TB onboard which can stay on 24/7/365. 120 gig just won't cut it!

I downloaded the desktop edition and created a USB drive. Then I started to reboot my computer, but after it got past the screen where I can edit the BIOS settings, it just went to a black screen and said "Boot error" or something like that. I made the USB drive first in the Boot Order.

I am trying to install ubuntu on a computer that has no ability to boot from CD or USB. I have a new hard drive on which I want to install ubuntu (IDE, with an adapter for USB), and another computer running ubuntu. How can I prepare this new hard drive so that a computer can boot from it and install Ubuntu? I don't wish to complete the install from another computer, because I want all the hardware detection and drivers to correct upon install.
All of this is using Ubuntu 10.04 Things I've tried already:
fai network boot - made some progress but have not found a set of instructions that clearly explains how to do this all the way through with ubuntu.
installing grub - it seems to be difficult to install grub on a new hard drive with no OS, but if I could get grub working, ubuntu can be installed from there.
I was given an external USB drive which has Windows XP Pro on the first partition. I can mount and access the partition with no problem. When I run update-grub, it finds the XP partition and creates a menu entry for it. But when I select it from the Grub menu, I get an error that the device is not found.

i recently made a startup disk for 10.10 on my external usb drive. i booted up using the usb drive and installed as normal except now when i want to use ubuntu it only works if i select to boot using the same external usb drive. i made sure to select the laptop's HDD for installing ubuntu, so i'm not sure why this would be.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted. I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message I am given means I think it could be trying to fchk it. Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have one new laptop that doesn't see one usb bootable device. The usb is a 1G with Mint8 on it that works on plenty of other systems. This is a newer HP laptop core i7 that see's two other flash drives and tries even to boot to my older flash install (only has syslinux no other files) but doesn't show the newer one in bios boot order or boot order choice F9.
It will work correctly under windows so the system does see it.
how to that that single drive to show up in order to boot to it?
Did power down, remove all usb except this one, tried to see if it fell under hard drives instead of usb.

I am attempting to set up an IBM Intellistation Z Pro to optionally boot from many OS versions. One of these is Windows XP. Windows XP is currently installed on a RAID 1 device consisting of a pair of 1 GB WD drives. These are SATA drives. The HBA I'm using is a SYBA SATA II card that uses Silicon Image's SIL3124-2 chip. The card has a BIOS and I've set up two 60 GB mirrors for Windows. I boot XP fine from this setup and things run good.
I've downloaded the CentOS 5.2 images and am able to start the installation process. I'm baffled on where to install the OS software on the RAID device. The installation process shows the two 1GB drives as separate drives and there is no acknowledgment of the 60 GB partition I've already created on them for Windows XP. I expected to see only the one logical RAID device and 60 GB of it in use for a NTFS partition. Reluctant to proceed further, I bailed on the install and am asking for advice on how to proceed.
The big question is
1) How can I install CentOS 5.2 on the RAID drive to coexist with a Windows XP installation? My desire is to boot either from this drive.

2) Why does the CentOS partitioning software used for the install not display the logical RAID drive set up through BIOS (I'm assuming that this means it was set up apart from any Windows drivers etc.)? Only the two physical drives are displayed and there is no mention of any partitions in use.

I have a machine with Squeeze that currently boots from an USB thumb drive (that was the only drive on that box, referenced as SDA in /dev... Yep, no optical drive or HDD). I have installed an SSD on that machine. It is referenced a SDA, and the thumb drive has been nudged to SDB. I'd like to boot from the SSD and ditch the thumb.
I've partitioned and formatted the new Disk (ext4), created a swap file (to keep things simple, no swap partition), and used rsync -Sax / /media/USB0/ to clone the content of the root FS. I've edited the fstab file of the SSD to match the config (uuid of the drive, ext4 FS, swap file) then use grub-mkconfig -o /media/USB0/boot/grub/grub.cfg (I apt-get installed grub 2)
I've set the SSD as first boot device in the BIOS. Now when I boot from the SSD, all I get is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen (the thumb drive still boots fine). I guess I missed something .
I've been struggling with this for about 2 hours now (not the grub issue, the whole mess). I've tried googling this last problem, then searched this forum with no luck (I usually find stuff about people who want to boot from a drive other than the first one and must daisy-chain grub).
