Ubuntu :: Tucan Alternatives - Doesn't Have Resume Capability
May 11, 2010
I've been using Tucan for Rapidshare downloads, but one thing that bothers me about it is that, as far as I can tell, Tucan doesn't have resume capability. I have a wireless connection which occasionally falters, and I have to restart all downloads from 0%. Is there a download manager for Ubuntu that will recognize my premium Rapidshare account and that also has resume capabilities?

I've found that lightweight download manager called Tucan, it seems looks good but I can't decide that yet because I can't integrate it with my browser Firefox 4 is there any way to do it? I've tried to add it manually to flashgot add-on of FF but I couldn't find the executable file of tucan

I'm setting up an HTPC (Zotac IONITX-F in a Silverstone ML02-MXR case with remote) running XBMC on top of a minimal karmic install. So far I've managed to get everything running including the tricky stuff: wireless, lcdpro and lirc. I did have the same samba/dhcp conflict described in this thread, so I opted for a static IP solution instead of the usual dhcp connection with the router (D-link DIR-615) reserving an IP for the MAC-address. This is my /etc/network/interfaces file:
Code:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
#auto eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
[Code]...

I'm running Debian 8.1 KDE on a 2007 dv6 laptop. Model number is worn off. lol but the specs:
Intel i3 first gen m 330
4GB RAM
Intel (ironlake) graphics
First off, closing the lid to my laptop doesn't trigger suspend, or anything no matter what I set it to in power options.
I can suspend using "systemctl" or suspend from the "Leave" menu, but upon turning my computer back on, my touchpad and keyboard don't work.
Sometimes, my touchpad will start working after about 15 seconds, but the keyboard doesn't come back. I have to hard reset.
I have a feeling it's something to do with systemd, but I'm not super proficient in linux. Just an end user who is friendly with a terminal.

Wireless works just fine. With Ubuntu 10.04, after many months with no problems, I suddenly lost capability of connecting to the modem/router. No hot spots show up as they previously did. I had a dual boot windows xp / ubuntu system. I needed to put more disk space on my system so I had the win xp system disk cloned. After doing that my ubuntu installation no longer appears.
The Ubuntu system was and is on a separate hard drive. So I am fairly sure that it is intact.
Is there someway I can restore the boot information?

I am running dual boot Linux Mint/Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell 560s Computer. Recently, had an event which required me to use the Windows 7 recovery CD to fix my mbr and rebuild it. After doing so I discovered when I boot the computer I know longer have the option to select either Windoze or Linux.

I tried the rescue mode of the install DVD. It doesn't have any package management initialized. What I want to do is have a LiveCD environment where I can install an RPM package into that live running system (not persistently ... but pretending so in RAM).
Ubuntu can do this. If I choose "Try Ubuntu" in the boot menu selection, I get a live system that has the DEB package manager ready to go. It can install more packages that depend on packages already installed.
I just want the same but having Fedora. If 16 GB of RAM is not enough, I can get more.

I am looking to setup some computers as thinclients to connect to my MS Terminal Servers. We have a homebrew application that configures RDP sessions. A user logs into a webpage that dynamically generates a "launch.rdp" file. This file is generated to balance the load between servers. What I'd like to do is configure an image to boot up into Mozilla. When the user goes to the webpage, I'd like the launch.rdp file to open up in a terminal server session.I've tried with rdesktop and tsclient, but unfortunately neither would work with a "rdp" file.

I have an SSH server running on my netbook on port 2222 and a VNC server running on 5901. The router only has port 2222 open to the laptop.
I use Connectbot on the Droid to connect t my Ubuntu via 2222 with a local port forward enabled 5901 to 192.168.1.111 (laptop IP) port 5901.
Once the conenction is established, I use VNC viewer on the Droid and have it go to 127.0.0.1 port 5901 (to be forwarded by Connectbot over the SSH pipe).
I want to take it a step further. I want to administer my DGL-4500 router without having to remote control the laptop and open firefox. My router doesn't allow SSH.
An obvious solution (in my small mind) would be to install a simple web server process on say port 8080 and do a port forward on the phone to 8080. Then whenever that port is hit, I would want some process that would take the request and pop that person over to 192.168.1.1...
Any ideas on how I could do this OR a better idea on how to do it better without opening the router to the outside world?
I am theorizing I could do a VPN server instead and then find a VPN app. With a VPN, I am theorizing once again I owuld assume an IP address in my home network and then just type 192.168.1.1 on my phone and connect in that way?

I'm looking for a music player, similar to rhythmbox, but one that allows for drag 'n drop mp3 cd burning capabilities.
If I'm not clear, I want to be able to drag songs from my library into a playlist, or whatever, just like rhythmbox will do for audio cd's, but be able to burn it as an mp3 cd to allow for long playlists.
My music folder is close to 10000 files in MANY MANY different folders. So making a long mp3 mixtape would be much easier if I could do it in the same program that already has every song in front of me.

Applied some software upgrades via a prompt from the update manager and now have no networking capability at all, wired or wireless. I also have no network icon in the panel. I have tried 2 different ethernet cables with no result. Having to log this call via my desktop PC.

I want to take out the multilib capability for my system. Is it as simple as using "slackpkg clean-system", to remove all the compat32 pkgs, then using "slackpkg upgrade-all" to replace all the gcc and glibc packages? The reason I ask, is that I only used the multilib to be able to run Google Earth. There are no other x86 packages on the system. I have another x86 computer that will run Google Earth if I need it. It just wasn't worth it for this one package.

LaserJet Pro CP1525NW. HP website mentions that it is compatible with Linux. However, this particular model cannot be found at Linux Foundation's OpenPrinting Database. As you can see here, there is no mention of HP LaserJet Pro CP1525N which makes me worried. Also, the printer is not listed in HP Linux imaging and printing.
What are your thoughts and do you have experience with this printer? What other Color Laser printer do you recommend? The fact that the that printer's specification on HP website says that it is compatible with Linux, yet it is not listed on HPLIP nor in Openprinting makes me nervious.

I have two partitions Windows XP (which was already installed before Ubuntu) and Ubuntu 9.1 (which I installed later). Now the XP doesn't boot anymore (sorry but I need it sometimes), the Windows screen with the progress bar appears and then it reboots after a couple of secs.
I can access to the XP partition from Ububtu.Of course I don't want to damage Ubuntu during the XP recovery action.

In my rather unsuccessful attempt to get gvim working properly (see [url] )
I am now considering using some other editor in windows which will allow editing of ssh shell script *on the linux server* directly.
At the moment I'm using winscp's editor which is no better than notepad really (no syntax colouring / code folding / colour settings)

Just wondering now I see computers everywhere with 6G of ram or more if the new 32b kernels are going to be setup for large amounts of ram or will they still need to be recompiled? Also will there be better ssd support for things like "trim"? I know you edit the fstab to get the Linux version of trim but I am just wondering if stuff like that will just be automatic or if I will continue to need to tweak. I like to tweak but sometimes its the lack of need for tweaking that makes me like slack.

I built this computer recently
AMD IIX6 1090T cpu
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO USB3 MB
2- 4GIG DDR3
1- 2GIG DDR3
OS DEBIAN SQUEEZE
I only recently started using and noticed thes errors.
I checked my system bios, ECC was not enabled because, when I setup mobo I selected system defaults instead of doing them manually. So I enabled them.
The message has not gone away.
I looked up the message and it shows in bug list.

1. Had I have enabled Ecc before installing Debian, would I be getting this message.
2.How do I apply patch.
3. I only have 3mem sticks instead of 4' should I take out the 3rd or add another?

In order to mitigate risks linked to the use of the classic syslog protocol (spoof, replay, tampering, lost messages...) I am looking for a product implementing the syslog-sign capability: [URL] which is still a draft in the IETF for the moment. On NetBSD, the sylog daemon is able to run this feature: [URL]. Did anybody tried this feature on a Linux system?

So, are there any alternatives to X for Linux? I often hear about other DEs that run on X11 or X, but I have read here and there that there are some alternatives that have picked up a little steam lately, but I know absolutely nothing about them.
What are these alternatives and how would you go about trying them? Are there any live distros that use anything but X?
