I'm pretty new to ubuntu/linux and my knowledge about window managers is limited, so please bare with me. I was wondering if anyone knows a decent wm that supports tiling and can also have the zoom effect from compiz (mod+scroll up/mod+scroll down). I know compiz can achieve some tiling with the grid addon but that's not that great. I was looking for something more similar to how xmonad manages windows and workplaces.

Sometimes I accidentally winkey + middleclick with compiz, which makes the desktop zoom into a small box. So far, every time it happens, I usually just log out, then log back in and it fixed it. Is there a more proper way to return the desktop back to it's normal unmagnified state?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been missing this feature from windows, and had thought I would just have to do without, but today, people have alluded that it is possible to do with compiz. I am referring to the ability to take a window, drag it to the edge of the screen and it to then fill up that side of the screen.. or if drug to the top, maximize itself. I have looked and messed with settings, and have been able to do something to the effect of dragging my mouse to the edge of the screen will kind of tile windows, but it does it to all my windows or all of a certain type and whatnot.
And I want to do it to a specific window, and then another - for the side by side viewing. it also does not vertically maximize it, only taking a portion of the screen from top to bottom. I have been able to do it this way by having only 2 windows open and using a keyboard to do so, but i would like to be able to use only my mouse. Is there a way to drag one window the the edge of the screen and have it maximize to that half-side of the screen AND/OR drag to the top and have it maximize to fullscreen?
I recently did a clean install of 11.04 over 10.10. I tried Unity, and wasn't a great fan. When trying to use Ubuntu Classic at login, I get straaaaange visual effects, such as no window title bars. I went into Synaptic and removed Unity and installed GNOME, thinking that GNOME would then run when I chose Ubuntu Classic at login, and after some tweaking, like adding gnome-panel and metacity --replace to the startup applications, it did.
Now here is the problem. When I try to add any effects through CCSM, they don't do anything. Zero. Zilch. Nout. I did get some effects when I first installed Natty, but this was part of the reason why my title bars disappeared - after every effect was applied, I had to restart.
getting my Compiz functioning again?
ive had ubuntu 10.4 on my system before but decided to see what else is out there on now im back here but ive compiz effects on when i first had ubuntu 10.4 and now the extra effects wont stay on and when i enable compiz effects they have the check next to it as if i enable them but when i exit they do not stay enable i have reinstalled ubuntu

recently I managed to install a plugin for Compiz that allows for head tracking. After getting past one hurdle after another I finally managed to compile it and made the webcam work with it in a 64-bit environment... Unfortunately, after I got this all working, the plugin constantly glitches out by zooming out immensely, distorting my desktop, and gives me a hall of mirrors effect. I know the plugin works because if I set some settings to minimum effect, it successfully tracks me and positions windows accordingly. But this makes the effect all jumpy and only works for periods of about 1.5 seconds then just doesn't do anything after that. Also, mouse tracking works flawlessly.

I've installed yesterday Fedora 14, 64 bit... Now I wanted to setup the nice graphic effect, but I can't find a way how to setup the minimize effect. I've installed additionally Emerald, ccsm and fusion-icon. I'm starting compiz using Fusion-icon. Just in the ccsm menus and icons I really can't find anymore how to setup those nice things like the magic lamp or there was also an effect which makes the window fold on minimizing (or closing).
And where did the burn effect go? It used to be there at some point in the past? And for closing effects and I didn't find nothing at all? Is there another configuration tool, besides ccsm, do I need to edit some config files in order to setup these things, should I install something more or nowadays. Compiz is losing its effects? Why all the topics regarding graphic effects are only on Ubuntu? Let's write about Fedora too !!

When any entries are listed under the "Animation Selection" for Minimize, Focus, or Shade; the animations do not play; and I receive a libnotify error: "Animation settings mismatch in 'Animation Selection' list for __<Minimize or Focus or Shade>___ event."This happens even with the Animation Selection values reset and even the entire Animation configuration reset. I use the Gconf backend, but this also occurs with a file-based configuration. This has never worked for me.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe best explanation I can get to my problem is in the title, I get some horizontal strips that I notice specially in videos (I use XBMC, full screen).I had this problem before in 10.4 and I was able to solve it simply by choosing no effects on the old menu for the appearance.
Unfortunately I followed the mote that states "If it works fine in needs more features" and I installed 11.4, now I can't seem to solve this problem... In the loggin screen I have the default option has Ubuntu classic (no effects) and I installed compiz settings and disabled everything there, but I still have the problem.I tried mint debian and I didn't have this problem there with everything off on the settings. How can I get the same effect as that "old" 10.4 menu to disable compiz?

Acer revo R3610 (atom + ion)
4gb ram
(And I have the nvidia drivers installed)
Is there some way top stop the "blind effect" of compiz so that when you double click the top title bar of a window that it maximizes the window instead of the rolling up type effect? Also when i place my mouse on the top right of the screen it brings it to a choosing window type mode where you can pick which window you would like to open, is it possible to get this on the top left of the screen instead? Lastly when I use Kdebluetooth4 to send a file to my computer where does that file save to?

Im using Firefox 3.6.12, and Ubuntu 10.10 When I go to this page for example:[URL].. and try to open third screenshot in first row... when I click on it, it is zooming in very slowly, and when I press X to exit it.. Firefox becomes unusable for about 5-10 seconds, and then starts to zoom-out the image, very slowly.I have this issue on every site that has big images to zoom, when I say big.I do not have issue with lets say 1600*1200 pixels, but I do with 2500*1600 pixels. My configuration : AMD Athlon 64 bit 3000+; Ati Radeon X600, 2GB DDR2. I have tested in all other browsers on my Ubuntu and its working fine. I have tried safe mode, I have tried new profile... I have tried latest Minefield beta. zooming is very slow everywhere I have tried live CDs Fedora 14, Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.10 and all of them have this issue with Firefox. I have tried disabling Compiz... not helping, I have tried disabling Pango in bashrc file, not helping. Firefox on Windows is working fine, and everything else except Firefox is working fine on Ubuntu
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen using Gmsh (a mesh software) and Salome (CAD software and for post-processing too) for zooming, the system logs out, and all jobs are killed. I zoom using the middle button of the mouse, by pushing it (withing Gmsh), or pushing the middle button with the Control key (within Salome).But when zooming with the middle button but using the scroll function, that produces the zoom too, the softwares seem to be ok and no immediat crash (but I don't know how many times it will be ok ...).Is there any troubles with graphic libraries ?
PS: OS : CentOS 5.3, recently updated, x86_64. On other linux distribution, no trouble reported by other colleagues.
When zooming in on some websites there is no horizontal scroll bar and therefore you can't scroll over to see the rest of the webpage? I've been using awesome for about 6 months at home, and started using it recently at my new job on my desktop at work. Whether it's at work or home, I've noticed that a tiling WM has increased my productivity 10 fold. I'm able to organize everything by tag, then tile. With awesomewm I have come to love it's reliainace on the LUA language. If I need a new feature, I can add it pretty easily. i.e. I have created custom prompts with some scripting to rdp and ssh into box's with the login information, resolution, already inputed.
Put in some if/else in there also, for certain hostnames that require different credentials, or different settings. It also mounts the c$ or root drive once connected to my /ticket/##### directory. So it's a snap to copy any file over. With LUA I've been pretty much able to extend the window manger to my needs with any script I can imagine. So come on everyone, discuss! Whether you are using awesomewn, or dwn or another great tiling window manager. Post your code, your settings, lets make this thread as big as the conky thread.

I know you can tile two windows side by side, but I would need something capable of tiling ALL of them. Does something like this exist, or would I need to look into writing a Gnome Shell extension?

I want to go simple and lightweight, and I know a lot of you run window managers such as openbox, fluxbox, and some tiling ones like xmonad, awesome and dwm. I want to give xmonad a try. For those of you who run tiling window managers, how do you know what is running in the background? There is no system tray in a screenshot such as this: [URL]. I'll be playing around with xmobar because that seems to be a popular panel with xmonad, and that's what's in that screenshot.
Also, how do you run your programs? You don't run it always from the command line, do you? When I want to run Chromium, I have to start up a terminal and load it that way, having the terminal and the browser open when using the browser. I know other window managers like openbox provide a right click menu, but xmonad doesn't (or does it?). I know a lot of people who use tiling window managers also use a lot of console apps, and I like that feel, but I don't think I'd want text for everything, such as the web.
just installed dwm i'm getting border gaps while in monocle view and tiling mode.i set border to 0 in my config.h file which fixed the problem, but after rebooting/suspend? the problem appeared again.
heres a pic: ok so maybe it was a bad idea to use black, but you can see part of the wallpaper on the bottom (the blue/purple line).
I've been playing around with two tiling window managers, scrotwm, and xmonad. I like xmonad better, but that's not the point. The point is that they both produce these strange black bars at the bottom when a terminal window is opened. Note that this does not happen in fluxbox/openbox, my other wm.

Note the black bar, or just dead at space the bottom of the the terminal windows. In the third image, the prompt is at the "bottom" of the window, or what should be. Again, this only happens in scrotwm and xmondad, no other wm's I've tested.
I installed firestarter and then at a later date uninstalled/purged it, both actions via synaptic. I have a very verbose boot, I like to see what's going on, and noticed after the uninstall/purge that I was getting an error zooming up the screen containing firestarter in it. After many restarts I found that a file was left in /etc/network/if-up.d/50firestarter and this file was simply a script trying to restart firestarter. At this point I've commented out the calling line and followed the commented line with exit 0. This removes the error but there's still a link calling the file so, is this a bug or am I missing something? It appears the uninstall/purge wasn't entirely complete.
