General :: Autofill IPod Shuffle With A Certain Amount Of Megabytes Of Music

May 5, 2010

I have a first generation iPod Shuffle (yes, I know it's old) with 512 megabytes of space (feel free to laugh). I also have arch linux installed on my computer, with a music folder containing about 30 folders full of music. This totals to about 2 gigabytes of music.

What I want to do is: create a script that moves no more than 512 megabytes (it can be slightly under this amount, but NOT over) of random songs from my music folder (and it's subsequent artist/album folders) to a separate folder. I will then use gtkpod to move those random songs in the new folder to my iPod Shuffle.

Ubuntu :: Run Multiple Applications In One Terminal?

Apr 6, 2010

What do people use to run multiple applications in one terminal?

Thinking of turning my GUI into a big terminal with openbox on top and was thinking, where would I find a command-line timer tool?

And if I only had one terminal, how would I switch between applications? A 5 hour timer isn't nice if it locks up the terminal for 5 hours...

Debian :: Creating Terminal Launched Applications (Shortcuts)

Jun 16, 2011

Just got a problem that I've spent a few days trying to get around. Basically, what I am trying to do is create launchers/shortcuts on my desktop that will
a) Launch a terminal with root or sudo access
b) Launch an application.
For example, an application I might ordinarily use as a super user or root user is 'hping3.'

Basically, I want to be able to click on the launcher, and have it open up a terminal with sudo access and launch the hping3 application. I've tried messing around with the 'create launcher' function, and entering in a command to be launched in a terminal window, but to no avail (e.g. something like "sudo hping3" or "su && hping3"). How to write up a simple script to launch a terminal with su access and launch a given application?

General :: Turn Off Font-antialiasing Only For Gnome-terminal But Not For Other Applications?

I'm running GNOME (gnome-session under xmonad). I want to turn off antialiasing (i.e. use monochrome mode) for fonts in gnome-terminal. But I want to retain antialiasing for other applications, like Firefox. Is this possible?

Antialiasing is great and almost necessary for using Firefox or Chrome. But it makes the fonts in gnome-terminal blurry at sizes around 12 or smaller.

Otherwise, I'll just have to use xterm, which seems not to anti-alias its fonts under any circumstances.

Ubuntu :: Certain Sites And Applications Don't Work

Jul 18, 2010

Ive heard so much about linux and while it is great to be back online it is frustrating when certain sites and applications dont work with linux. Why cant linux produce a simple o/s like windows where i can download a file and open it simply without having to type and search.

I dont want to give up on ubuntu but unless i can get freecorder working or the sound recorder to actually record by itself or with audacity and tvu player and andromedanet.com to work hen i will have to, but my question remains- why cant linux be so user friendly to pcnumbnuts like me and others and perform simply and then you would have a real alternative to windows, but until then windows wins all time bye all.

Ubuntu Installation :: Remote X Applications Don't Work After Upgrade To Lucid

Oct 2, 2010

I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) system to 10.04 (Lucid) and my remote X applications no longer work. The problem seems to pertain to Xauthority. When the remote X client attempts to access the X server on Lucid it receives an error indicating that there is no matching MIT Magic Cookie (hereafter cookie) for the display. It turns out that this is true. I'm of the belief that the subject cookie should be generated for my display when the X session is started on Lucid.I thought this was being done by GDM when I logged on. However, $HOME/.Xauthority contains only 1 cookie which is for the display identified as "Pluto/Unix:0" (Pluto is the name of the host). I'm expecting a cookie for a display identified as "Pluto.my.test:0" where "my.test" is the domain name for my network.

Debian Multimedia :: Main Menu Won't Work On Some Applications?

Jun 10, 2011

Recently our Son showed me Xscreensaver which he has running on his Debian Squeeze machine. Since I really like what you can do with it and since I use Squeeze as well, I figured that I'd try out the Xscreensaver on my system. Compiz is already working and I haven't had any 3D related problems yet. Anyway, so I install xscreensaver from the software center ... then I go to the main menu ... sure enough it's there alright. Then I place a checkmark in the box to activate/display that feature in the main menu ... but after a second or two the checkmark just vanishes. This happens over and over, even after rebooting.

I thought that a logged in user has full privileges over the items that appear in the main menu? Am I missing something? I don't know of any other (root) method to access the main menu with the apps ... Everything else reacts fine, just the folder for the xscreensaver can't be checked.

OpenSUSE :: Switched To SUSE - Applications For Legal Work?

Mar 24, 2011

As the title of this post indicates, I recently switched over to SuSE from Fedora 14. I find that the default software repositories in YaST lack a lot of the amusements and applications I use for my legal work.

What I'm really looking for are apps that work well with the US tax code or plugins for law citations in LibreOffice. I could totally rely on SuSE if I could find that stuff!

I'm also looking for a few awesome games that I can download from an official repository. Can anyone recommend apps that fulfill my needs, any cool non-rogue RPG games or any software repositories where I can find them? I've got an X86_64 machine, openSuSE 11.4 KDE installed and I've got 4GB of DDR3 RAM.

Applications :: Get OpManager Checks To Work On Bering 3.1.1 Over SNMP?

Jul 16, 2010

I desperately need help with Bering UClibC and SNMP checks. Now before I begin, I have managed to get this working on CentOS in the same hosting environment, so I am not completely new to this. Now my problem.I am trying to get OpManager checks (live moitoring software) to work on Bering 3.1.1 over SNMP.I have configured everything correctly in the snmpd.conf. The correct natting and ports are open from the firewall, I have installed all the packages necessary (netsnmpd.lrp, libm.lrp, libsnmp.lrp, snmpmibs.lrp).

I have been working on this for the last 3 days and it is starting to get very frustrating that I cannot get this to work. The main device that I am trying to get working is a Soekris 5501, thinking that it might be a hardware issue I booted up a workstation and ran Bering and tried it on there and still no luck, which basically ruled out hardware. I believe it's a MIBs issue, but I cannot seem to find the MIB's required for the Soekris device.

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Or can someone confirm that they have gotten SNMP checks to work with Bering on Opmamager and if so how did you do it?
