Jul 11, 2010Got a simple question about xubuntu. I installed it from ubuntu via 'xubuntu-desktop' package and all seems to be working fine. My ubuntu programs and files appear in xubuntu and run normally. However, when I change the theme, the metacity window frame remains the same. How do I change it? It's stuck with the last used ubuntu metacity theme.

May 13, 2010I've attached 2 jpeg screenshots. Look at the center of the top panel and you'll find my Workplace Switcher. In the Ambiance screenshot, the Workplace Switcher clearly shows that Google Voice is open in the 2nd workspace because it shows that icon there. In the Custom screenshot, the Workplace Switcher shows there's a window open in the second workspace, but no icon to identify what's in the window. I've checked all available controls, and only Ambiance and Radiance correctly show icons for most open windows in the Workplace Switcher. Does anyone know how to make controls from other themes work with Workplace Switcher the way that Ambiance and Radiance do?

May 4, 2011For some reason, from time to time on login, as my normal theme starts to load, it changes to some sort of silver theme (a very basic one), and I am unable to change it over to any other theme. Checking the theme being used, it still says my desired one is set, but it is not. Also, no matter what theme I change it to, that basic silver theme is the one being used. This includes a default icon theme, not the one I prefer.
The only option that seems to fix things is a restart, and the hope that on this login it won't mess up like before.I am using Natty, from a fresh install, with Ubuntu Classic as my desktop, and have reinstalled things more than once to try and fix a few of the Natty-related issues, but this one keeps coming back.

So i did some searching and the only thing i could find was to run "emerald --replace" in the terminal, and it worked, but if I exit out of the terminal, it reverts back to the old theme.How do I keep emerald's theme, even after I exit the terminal?

Jun 1, 2010The top bar of all of my windows is gone, which i think is due to metacity no longer starting up, im pretty sure it should be in the system moniter but its not, i can teporarily get it going by restoring it in the terminal, but that only lasts as long as the terminal is open, can anyone tell me how to permanantly restore it to run normally.

Feb 21, 2011I updated my laptop from F12 to F14 via preupgrade. After doing so, the standard mouse theme was active. So I installed the one I like again and set it as mouse theme. For some reason it is now a mixture of the one I installed and the standard theme. If I open a place in nautilus the displayed symbol is the right one while waiting, if I open something in control center I get the standard icon. Same problem with drag and drop, I always get the hand from the standard theme. I also tried the former standard theme Bluecurve and it was the same problem.Can anyone tell me what goes wrong with the theme? What has changed in F14, that the older themes won't work?

In Sabayon, when I enable Compiz, it changes my window theme manager to Emerald. I want to use metacity, not Emerald. They kept telling me it wasn't possible when I used Compiz effects and Metacity together all the time.

Mar 10, 2011My workstation has a Nvidia Quadra FX550 graphics card which affects compiz in a very bad way; movies is often just black screened, Blender runs extremely slow etc. Switching to Metacity makes the computer much more robust without any glitches.
I would gladly move to Metacity if not for a big BUT; the annotation tool in Compiz which I use all the time. Not having that makes me a handicapped animator.
So, is there some sceen annotate tool that works in Metacity?

Aug 4, 2011I enjoy using vim from lxterminal with the black background, as well as awesome with its dark theme. I configured xfe manually to be darkish, and i use darklooks as a GTK theme to suit it as well. I could say all my desktop looks pretty dark, which my eyes thank me for. I also use redshift.But problems come along when surfing the web. Most web pages (including this one) have very bright styles. They are not the problem themselves, but switching from my windows hurts my eyes since it's a quick change to a much brighter screen.What would you do, either:
1. Use everything with a brighter background and putting the screen brightness a bit lower. (changing the GTK theme to clearlooks, using lxterminal with a white background, etc.)
2. Use some color theme with uzbl so that pages would look much darker. (like when you set manually the text and background colors in Firefox/Iceweasel)
I would myself go with the second one if most pages wouldn't look that bad when modified that way. For example, many pages use non-transparent images with white backgrounds on white pages, so if you change the background to black not only it looks horrible but it too is a mess.

May 30, 2010I recently installed KDE on my Ubuntu setup to try kubuntu by installing the kubuntu-desktop package.I decided I didn't enjoy KDE as much as GNOME, so I went back into GNOME and uninstalled the kubuntu-desktop package via Synaptic.That didn't remove ANY of the stuff that it brought in, so I searched for the keywords "kubuntu" and "kde" and uninstalled all packages but one (libdecoration0) to get rid of all the KDE-mess.Now, after logging back in...THERE IS NO WINDOW BORDER. AT ALL.

Nov 21, 2010I would like to be able to use compizconfig-settings-manager to set some custom settings for compiz, and then have compiz be the window manager that runs when I log in. The trouble is that I cannot seem to find a good way to have compiz run at log in. I can add "compiz --replace" to my startup programs list, but this loads metacity and then replacing it with compiz and seem to add a bit to the startup time (not to mention it seems to be slightly unreliable).
Further, I tried this: Uninstalled compizconfig-settings manager. In appearance preferences, set visual effects to normal. Everything seems to work fine until I log in again, at which point no window manager runs. Setting visual effects to none makes metacity load.

Jul 23, 2011For whatever reasons, I cannot seem to enable metacity transparency. I'm running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 11.04 and I broke Unity in favor of Gnome 3. I have enabled metacity compositing and adjusted the opacity to the desired level via the configuration editor.
However, there is no transparency whatsoever. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm currently working hard on creating Gnome Shell themes and GTK+ 3 themes that look and work well together.
