General :: Command Line Terminated By Ampersand - Put It In The Foreground?
Jun 14, 2011
I know a program running in the background can be brought to the foreground by typing 'fg'. So, if
command_line &
really runs the program in the background, my question has just been answered. But then all reduces to this question (yeah, I know; but I'm asking in earnest): does the ampersand sign make the program run in the background?

I have many processes running that printf local debug. (they will log to file later!) I start them by
Code:
( sleep 20000000 | fp ) & else they get killed/stop by themselves. So now its running in the background, I want to bring it to the front to see the printfs.

I am using Ubuntu as the client machine operating system. I have a start up program to connect to a Windows terminal Server. I am needing assistance in how I can force the client to logoff if the terminal connection is terminated for any reason. This is more of a security issue as we do not want the students using the computer to access the loacl machine at all. The program works great on boot, but it shows the home screen when terminated.

I know my way around MS Windows much better, but I just don't feel right trying to program something for Android on a Microsoft operating system. I am interested in Android programming so I followed the instructions on [URL] to install the environment on my computer...
I just installed the JDK, SDK, Eclipse successfully (or I assume):
* When I get to Step 4 where I'm supposed to run 'android' it will not run. I get the error message "android: command not found" (I am definitely in the right directory).
** When I double-click it in nautilus, it opens up in gedit. I can set the permissions in nautilus (through the properties - Allow executing file as a program) and get it to work,
My system:
Intel i7
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
android-sdk-linux-x86
eclipse 3.6.2

I pass two parameters in a URL, s and q. I recently ran into the problem that the & in the value(aerial&satelitecity)causes a bit of trouble so I need to replace it. After some research I found that it needs to be replaced by %26. I've tried the standard PHP functions htmlspecialchars and htmlentities, but they translate to & Is there another function that I haven't found yet or must I write my own?

Is it possible to schedule a process in the foreground? Lets say a cron schedule to be ran at 9:00. I would like to come back at 9:30, see how the process is running, and being able to interact with it... lets say kill it, or whatever. Is it possible? (Its not necessary to use cron, but it must be in Command Line)

I start a process, put it in the background running, then log out, then log in again, and want to bring the process to front again. I've looked in "ps aux" for the PID, but it won't be put in the foreground with "fg ###". What's the correct way? (I use the same account for both login sessions.)

Also happens with Gimp (when it does run it's plug-ins). Parts of Gimp started by `gimp q.jpg&' freeze and cannot continue unless "killall -CONT" or made foreground. Is it a bug? How to reliably start things in a background?

I was trying to learn more about xorg configuration and came through an exercise that should be run at run level 3. So, I wrote init 3 in the command line then the x server stopped and the system was trying to enter run level 3 but then it hangs and nothing happens. At that time I was connected to the system via putty and wrote the command init 5 and the x server started again normally. I tried init 3 again and had the same thing.

I typed in sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and it tells me it's already installed. Good. So it should work. I type sudo/etc/init.d/gdm start and the screen goes blank for 8 seconds three times in a row and then back to the command line. I have also tried gdm start without the path before and it says GDM already running. Aborting! I have 8.10 and it's a valid disk (no errors).
