Is it possible to schedule a process in the foreground? Lets say a cron schedule to be ran at 9:00. I would like to come back at 9:30, see how the process is running, and being able to interact with it... lets say kill it, or whatever. Is it possible? (Its not necessary to use cron, but it must be in Command Line)

I've looked in "ps aux" for the PID, but it won't be put in the foreground with "fg ###". What's the correct way? (I use the same account for both login sessions.)

That process kept running in the background in the other machine and now i want to bring it back to foreground in that machine. However running the command 'fg %<process_id>' is not helping. How would I schedule a process/application to start at a specific time (if it matters, it will be a background process). For instance, have process abc start every weekday at 5am. I've done this for windows many times though have only been using linux regularly for a few months and haven't figured out the best way of doing this.
So far the best solution I have is to create a program that will start on boot and have it check the time and sleep until the required time and then start the required process(es) at the required time(s). But this seems more of a hack since I'd expect there to be a proper way of doing this.
I've changed the terminal colors and now irssi statusbars have white text on light blue background. I would like to change the foreground color of the irssi statusbars to black but can't figure out how to do it. I don't want to download a whole theme, I only want to change this one color.

Also happens with Gimp (when it does run it's plug-ins). Parts of Gimp started by `gimp q.jpg&' freeze and cannot continue unless "killall -CONT" or made foreground. Is it a bug? How to reliably start things in a background?

I am setting crontab to run a script every minute irrespective of the current hour's value:

But it is not working. Does the line mean: "Run this script every day at hour:01"?
my problem is that an application which I want to start at the startup is creating some problems if it is started at the startup. But if it is started after a few seconds or say a minute of the startup, it doesn't cause any trouble.

I am trying to create a backup schedule for client computers and servers; and I would like your opinion on what I came up with. Here is network infrastrusture setup:
16 client computers
6 serevrs
- Primary and Secondary Web Server (RAID 1)
- Primary and Secondary Domain Controller (RAID 1)
- File/Print Server (RAID 5)
- Backup Server (RAID 1) with USB 2.0 1TB External Drive
Of course I will evetually upgrade to Tape Drives, but I am saving up for that. Anyways I want to backup ALL client computers, Primary Web and DC server, and File/Print Server. This will be done (of course) on the Backup Server) Here is the schedule:

1. I have many server that want to do backup mysql all from that server everyday. I need advice for for write shell script to backup all mysql in different server to server backup everyday and create auto folder as date example 27102009, 28102009..........for a month will has 30 folder in server backup.
2. Also need to write shell script to delete all folder but keep only one week last example from 1 to 30 it will has 30 folder in sever backup but i want to keep only 7 folder last and want to set schedule delete it every saturday night.

one tell me the internal working of kill command. that is how it kills a process internally or from where it picks file to continue its process.

1. Created a child process from parent process using 'fork()'
2. Sent a signal 'SIGALRM' from child process to parent process using 'sigqueue' function.
(The Third parameter of 'siqueue' function contains the message (message msg) which the child process wants to send to the parent process.'msg' is a stucture instance containing a) pid of child and b) string) 5. as we all know Process Scheduler does Process scheduling and its a process as well. I was just wondering that if this happens then the Process "Process Scheduler" should be a part of Process queue as well.
So if there are 5 process are there in Process queue & process scheduler is administrating them then since its also a process, once it puts a process under RUN state it should itself go inside queue because at one instant only one process can get executed on a processor. This is quite confusing for me. Please help me out. I tried to search on this but could not find any relevant topics.
