View 7 RepliesI want to set a up a network of inter connected pcs, for example on pc A linux is installed.now pcs B, C , D, etc should connect to A and do there work, for example A want to do C/C++, development, whereas B wants to do some PERL development or whatever, this is just an example, 2 different pc users might do same work also, and the connecting pcs may have Windows or linux or bsd.OSes now what h/w or s/w is required and what steps are required to set up this network, main pc would be connected to internet and also connected pcs might want to use internet also..have installed opensuse edulife , and use this as PC A for testing.. and I use bridged dsl Broadband connection to connect to internet , by the username and password provided by the ISP, in windows its easy to setup this connection, however not able to do on linux,

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I connect to my Ubuntu box from any Mac OSX 10.6 client (Snow Leopard) using Nomachine, the 'd' key minimizes all windows on my Ubuntu box. I found another post here that says the issue can be fixed by changing some settings on the Ubuntu box when connected. However, I cannot find the location of the settings indicated in that post [URL].
Does anyone know how to resolve this 'd' key problem?
I am trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over a non-internet connected LAN, but when i enable the LAN connection on my desktop (the one with the wireless) its internet stops working.
it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.
desktop: ubuntu 9.10 , wireless and LAN
laptop: windows xp, LAN only
I am running some Matlab simulations on Natty Narwhal. Each time this matlab script outputs a figure, Matlab jumps to the foreground, as if I clicked it on the launcher. This is really annoying, because if I'm typing something in my browser for example, and a figure is displayed, I am taken away from my browser and I have to click the browser to resume typing.Is there a way to just have Matlab run in the background without interfering my other work?
View 2 Replies View Relatedprograms (especially Firefox, though I haven't used other programs much) stop responding rather frequently without warning and after some time they just start responding again. Apt-get also takes ages to unpack stuff when I'm upgrading/installing something, that might be related. According to top there is barely any cpu usage at all during these freezes. I had this issue on a stock Lucid install. When Maverick came out, I tried that one, and the issue still existed. On a fully upgraded Maverick system, it's still there as well. Windows works without a hitch, as does Ubuntu running under a VM on windows.

I would really like to stop Konqueror opening up links from Skype and other programs. It's becoming annoying because I have Chrome set to be the default browser, but for some reason when I click on a link it opens in Konqueror.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on my computer I am greeted by an unending stream of "Starting File Managers" appearing in the programs list. This cannot be stopped, though none of the file managers actually open. They just sit there filling up my programs bar and wasting my cpu slowing down computer. It also means I cant upon my own folders, or see what programs I have open.If I run terminal, type xkill and click on one of the buttons in the programs list, that kills them all, and I can see my programs again for a bit, until it fills up again. The panel disappears and appears again, with all the spawning messages gone and any other programs I have open remain there. Its just the randomly spawned "Starting File Managers" that don't come back.
My CPU fluctuates. Its around 60% to 90% load, when it should be idle, but is instead opening all these windows.When I view the processes the most CPU intensive (when I sort) is Gnome System Monitor at 6% and then Gnome panel at 5%,gconfd-2 is as around 2%, compiz.real, dbus-deamon hover around 1%. And everything else is generally at 0%.So somewhere, a hidden process is using about 70% of my CPU load. Which isn't shown in system-monitor. Maybe because its an admin process and I can only see simple user processes. I dunno.There is something else though. I have a process with no name appearing, its blank. And it keeps disappearing and re-appearing. So you can hardly select it hard enough to kill it. I managed to kill it once and it said error, process (large number, 10,000 or 100,000) does not exist. So can't be killed.When I do an xkill the console writes:

I've installed Ubuntu server edition 10.4 to one of my older computers and When I go to install something I get the error message Package could not be found. I'm assuming it's not connected to the internet. It doesn't Show up on my router. I'm trying to install Ubuntu-desktop using the code "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop.
View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday I updated my kernel, and then i could not run my wireless card, since I use the broadcom STA driver and there was no update on rpmfusion yet.
I googled and downloaded akmod, and all got fixed after a reboot.
Latter last night, i got an update message in wich, among other updates, was rmpfusion's aforementioned update, I installed it.
After a reboot, I am connected to my network, ifconfig throws normal stuff (default gateway, ip adresses and subnet mask) and i LOOKS like there should be no problem
however I'm unable to connect to any website, or access any remote server via ssh, or ping anything.
Also, i disabled ipv6 in firefox just in case, and it was no use.
I am very new to the wonderful world of Linux and from what I've read about and my limited experience (approx. 3 hrs) I like it; but I'm having one problem that I need to get fixed: I'm dual booting currently with W7 (boo) only because I can't get my internet to stay connected(?) for extended periods of time using F15.
When I first installed F15, everything went smoothly, it asked me for my PW for the wireless internet and it said that it was connected. After I loaded Firefox for the first time, thinking to myself "Awesome, it set itself up completely and is running perfectly) I was let down. On my laptop I have Quickbuttons. Touch sensitive buttons above my F-keys (incase you didn't know what I was referring to. When I connect to the internet, with my wireless card on, I can successfully load 1 internet page. Halfway though the page load, the internet light/button starts to flash repeatedly on/off rapidly. Internet connectivity seems to have stopped at this point as I can not load another internet page or use the chat window any more. If I disconnect from my internet and reconnect, everything works fine for 1 more internet page then back to flashing and no more connectivity.
If I restart using the Windows OS, everything works fine and my desktop is working normally as well, so it must be something with F15. What do I need to do in order to get the internet card to work continuously? What am I missing? Please remember, I'm very new to this and all the troubleshooting web pages that I've found thus far are talking WAY above my head.

I hooked up to a wired connection and ubuntu installed the drivers for the broadcom card.When I put the cursor over the wireless icon on the desktop it shows the name of my wireless connection,active,and my ip address but when I open firefox I get a "server not found". I'm confused as what to put in the boxes for ssid,mode,bssid,mac address,and mtu under network connections. I have tried put my routers IP in /etc/resolve.conf but to no avail. I also tried putting 8.8.8.8.
Edit: Toshiba Sattelite A215 laptop (RS690 wireless card?) and a Linksys router.
im using mandrake linux 2010.0 , and i connected my router cable (dlink) to the computer, and it detects without needing configuration to the 'eth0' and it shows me the ip the dns and gateway, everything ok, but then i go in firefox it says that i couldent connect because theres no internet connection,ive looked at the proxys the firewall, tried to uninstal the eth0, the ppp0 and install then again and still the same,does any one have an idea of what could be?

I am running Xubuntu 9.04, with LXDE on an old Acer 526iTX. After fiddling around trying to connect it to a Vista machine using a crossover cable, I must have broken the internet (well not the whole internet obviously, just my connection). nm-applet will show the connection as working, but no loading takes place (eg. firefox shows 'connecting to google.com.au..' but nothing happens). Same behaviour whether browsing, pinging or updating by CLI, and over any type of connection (mobile broadband, wifi or ethernet cable). This has persisted over many days, through restarts and deleting and re-creating the connection in nm-applet. I can also rule out a hardware problem as the connections work fine using a live CD.It's no big deal if I have to reinstall (I probably will anyway), but I was wandering if anyone would know the probable cause of this behaviour.

I installed Fedora 15 today and after a few very long hours finally got the broadcom driver to work and my laptop is now connected to my router. Yay! But now when I try going to a website in firefox it says server not found. I can ping anything inside my network but when I try to ping outside the network, for example google, it says ping: unknown host google.com. So I thought it might be a DNS problem but the network settings point to the router for DNS so I'm not sure what else could be wrong. All of the other settings look correct.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using SuSE 11.3. I have installed this betavine stuff with which I can use my Vodafone mobile connect usb device. (vodafone-mobile-connect-2.10.01-1.noarch.rpm + dependencies.) I was able to get it to run, it can connect, I can even send text messages (SMS) with it.
However, if I try to use the internet, the system behaves as it wasn't connected to it at all. ping doesn't see anything, neither does firefox etc. I have turned off all proxy and firewall settings.
I suppose I should tell Linux to use this connection for the internet, but how? Do I have to configure something with NetworkManager?
I just got a new power supply in my old desktop, and installed ubuntu on it. I've got three NICs in there (for a later project), and when I connect my cable modem to any one of the NICs, then little connection triangle-spinny-thing in the upper-right tries to connect. But it never gets all the way connected.
View 5 Replies View Relatedjust installed Ubuntu Netbook remix on my acer aspire one, and come across a problem Ive never faced before. Im able to Connect to my router (and access it through the internal ip address) but as soon as i try access anything outside of my network there is nothing!
This i found odd as first i thought it might have just been my Routers problem, but seeing as all my other computers were connected to it with no problems (wired and wireless) I quickly traced the problem back to the laptop.
After this i decided to see if after a simple update would fix the problem. so i connected it up through the Ethernet port once again it connects to the router but no internet! I have tried everything in my knowledge, but with no success!
I have a compaq cq40-133tu laptop. I have windows vista ultimate and ubuntu 9.10 parallely installed. Most of the time i use Ubuntu for programming purpose. But for internet connection i have to go to windows. This is because ubuntu is getting connected to the network but is unable to access internet, whereas the windows can. I want to totally abandon windows. Recently i got internet connection in ubuntu for just 15 minutes or so when i ticked the option AVAILABLE TO ALL USERS. but after that the same story continues and iam not able to access internet. Details about Internet connection: This is not my connection, these signals come from nearby building. Its a wifi open public network.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOften i have an active connection on the tree network with an internet dongle according networkmanager, but ping is not working and firefox and thunderbird also don't have a connection. Skype however is working at that time. (testcall to skype is working) My present solution is to disconnect and connect a couple of times again until i can ping a commonserver on the internet, and then everything is working normal. Many are stating networkmanager is buggy, is this a known bug and is it worked on or do i need to install another program. Has any of you an idea what could be going on and how to solve it, permanently. In the way it's automatically right when connecting.
My dongle is of type: Huawei E 1550 and often i have a normal connection.
Am using Ubuntu 9.10 live disc.Plugged in the 3G wireless usb modem and followed network connection prompts- internet connection is working (little lighthouse icon and network manager indicates that it is connected).Firefox however does not want to connect to the internet.I've done the usual checks- deselected "work offline"; looked under advanced preferences and ensured 'no proxy' under the network connections tab. Problem seems to be firefox not recognising the live network connection, so any tips or workarounds are welcome.

At ubuntu resolve.conf seems ok, as there is already IP address of my gateway?
