while I use Alt-F2 and then type nautilus, the nautilus start.
why?

Fedora :: Nautilus Doesn't Work After Switching From KDE To GNOME
Jan 20, 2010I recently switched my desktop environment from KDE-4.3.4 to GNOME-2.28-2 and I did that by installing most of the gnome-packages and uninstalling pretty much all of the kde-ones. After reboot everything worked fine except the file browser that doesn't seem to care about my feelings. It launches and when I try to kill the process the status changes from sleeping to uninterruptible and then back to sleeping. The only way is to reboot but that isn't a solution.Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Shell Alt-tab Menu Doesn't Work?
May 14, 2011I'm trying out gnome-shell right now and for some reason, when I use the alt-tab shortcut, it switches to the next window and then the menu immediately disappears, so I have no ability to look at the detailed menu option. This might have something to do with me having changed a lot of my keyboard shortcuts in regular gnome. For example, I use super-tab rather than mod4-tab. Also, my key to call up the shell is caps lock because my other two super keys (super and right control) are all assigned to various keyboard shortcuts.

Aug 31, 2010I installed nautilus-open-terminal, and now the option "Open in Terminal" does show up in the context menu for me in Nautilus, and clicking it does open a terminal. But it just opens to the home directory, every time, same as if I'd opened a terminal in the ordinary way. I've tried to look for solutions to this, but I can't find anyone that even has the same problem. Other people complaining about it all seem to be saying that a terminal doesn't even open for them, which is not the case for me.

Mar 4, 2010So, supposedly Gnome Shell is available through synaptic. I just downloaded and installed it and then ran gnome-shell --replace. It doesn't work at all. I hit the windows key and get nothing and there is no application launcher in the upper left hand corner and Alt-f2 produces nothing at all. Alt-tab gives me the option of choosing the windows that were running when I ran gnome-shell --replace but nothing else works at all. Just a vast expanse of digital nothingness. Does anyone know why this might be? I have an nvidia video card (see sig below) and two monitors running from "twin view".

Nov 13, 2010I just installed GS following the instructions here:[URL]... and the classic way of getting GS to start at login (adding gnome-shell --replace in start up applications) doesnt work.
To start GS now we have to use the command "~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell/src/gnome-shell --replace" via the terminal adding that to start up doesnt work either, does anyone know how to get GS to start at login?

Jan 9, 2011I need to start a (bash) script in XFCE or GNOME so that, by double clicking its icon, it opens in a new shell window where it can be stopped with ctrl+c. As it is, when I start it, it runs in background (does not open window), so I need to manually start terminal and kill process. Also I don't see the output and that is important.

Debian Multimedia :: Skype Starting Every Time When Open Interactive Root Shell
Jan 20, 2015I recently "upgraded" to the latest skype and now every time I open an interactive root shell, up pops skype. I can close skype then control-C in the terminal window to get the shell I want, but this is annoying to say the least. Maybe my google-foo is off, but all I can find is articles on how to run skype as root, which is no use. I've tried searching the startup files for "skype" (case independant), but so far all I can find is "LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ /usr/bin/skype" in the root .bashrc which shouldn't be starting the app.
what could be causing this?

Jan 12, 2011The first set of links under Places in the menu bar applet open Picasa instead of nautilus and their associated folders.I tried reapplying the applet from the "add to panel" menu. No go. Also when I get into nautilus (using "computer" below the separation line in the places menu) I can access the bookmarks just fine.

May 30, 2010After moving to Lucid Lynx, I've noticed, that when I view Folder Preferences, Nautilus no longer displays the free space available, but instead displays "Free space: Unknown".
In some cases it still appears to show the free space, for example when viewing properties of Home folder, or viewing the properties of a detachable HDD in media-folder (but not when trying to view the properties of any of the folders _on_ that HDD).
Ubuntu Networking :: Nautilus Doesn't See Shared Folders On Windows Box
Nov 24, 2010I have a home network consisting of a Desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate and a laptop running Ubuntu 10.10. Nautilus won't allow me to open Windows shared folders from the browser by just clicking on the icons. That is to say, clicking on Network in the bookmark pane and opening Workgroup doesn't do anything. Sometimes I get a "can not mount: failed to retrieve share list from server" error, sometimes my Windows box just isn't visible at all. All my shared folders on the laptop are visible and rw accessible from the Windows desktop.
I should add that if I hit ctrl-L in Nautilus and manually enter "smb://<server-name>/share/" in the address bar, it mounts and opens the specified folder just fine. I have some of the folders already manually mounted to various locations in fstab.
I've found the issue with Games for Windows Live, and uninstalled that from the Windows computer. I'm not using firewalls on either computer for now to eliminate that as a possibility. Since the Ubuntu Laptop seems to be the one with the problem, I'll focus on that for now.

Dec 1, 2010When you open up a file browser, if there are tons of files in some directory, it will be tedious to locate the desired one mannually. For most of the file browsers, the desired file will be located automatically by obtaining the focus when you type the filename. I don't believe that Nautilus doesn't have this feature.So, there must be something I can configure with. Note that I'm just using the default Nautilus with fresh Ubuntu installation.

Jul 14, 2011Im having a rather bizarre problem with the gnome panel in ubuntu 11.04. When i go to places and try to home folder, desktop, etc with a mouse click, Nautilus does not open. Instead a really old looking program called textedit opens. The only thing that doesnt cause textedit to open is clicking on computer.
