View 9 Repliesstreaming videos i sometime want to save them, after watching. generally they're saved as flash videos or mpeg-4 video, which is all fine.however periodically they're split-up and saved in smaller chunks with names like data_1, data_2, data_3 etc. these range from 14.0 - 44.0 MB. the file in question (currently i'm trying to save from the cache) was from divxden, or possibly divxstage.eu either way i think it used the totem plugin.so, my question is: does anyone know if these files can be stuck back together, or if this feature can be changed so streamed files are kept intact?

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen the system was setup, it was setup with one physical LVM, and one logical LVM (aside from the swap and boot) as the "default" partitioning. Now I want to make /var sit on it's own partition.
1. I booted with a Live CD, and reduced the size of the LogVol00 from 1.5T to 100G (I plan to split out more than just /var...but I'll start with /var)
2. I created a new logical LogVol02 for 100G Ext 3 FS (step 1 and 2 with LVM GUI Utility) which seems to have worked just fine.

Right now, if I had to reinstall and define each partition at install time, it wouldn't be a problem, the system hasn't been fully configured...but the point of the exercise was to work with LVM (i've never used it before, I always used just fdisk only) and learn to split off directories into their own parition.
Server have extended partition size around 490 GB. I want to spilt the extended partition to each two partition(ut0 & ut1) size 100 GB. How to split the extended partition in Redhat linux 5?

Is there a way to split the existing 950GB partition into two (900GB and 50GB) without altering or moving the data that's currently on it?
I've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for just under a week. Recently, a partition called 'Data' has disappeared, and all my music and documents along with it. The folder is not to be seen in Places or on my desktop. My only way of finding it is to go to terminal. But when I try to open it there I get an error saying I don't have permission to read it. In Puppy Linux and SliTaz I can easily find the partition and read it. What should I do to bring it back in Ubuntu?

I just did a 200 gig backup (so i am safe) and i want to join 2 (ext3) partition together, sdb1 (data4) and sdb5 (data5) into one big partition. Is there a way to do it without scraping the data in sdb5 (data5). It would save me from rewriting the data back to that new partition (200 gig is time consuming).

When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).

Well, my laptop slid off my couch and crashed down onto hardwood floor. The hard drive is shot. I was using grub and had both ubuntu 10.10 and windows 7 on it. Can't load either OS.
What options do I have for trying to recover data off the ubuntu partition? I tried loading livecd...for some reason, it won't work. Does livecd require a working harddisk?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a hdd of about 225gb when i installed ubuntu it gave a nice split down the middle on the partition and a 3gb swap. I tried to manually assign a data partition but was unsuccessful; kept getting a root error and couldn't fix it so i let it do it automatically.
Now win7 has a 60gb partition and the rest is on ubuntu side.
How can i give win7 more room? qparted for linux side or partition magic on win side?

Ive installed ubuntu for the first time today, i have a hdd of 500gb, that had 65gb occupied with music, movies and games.
What i did during installation:
it asked me where to install it, so i created a new partition of 100gb ext4 type, to install it there, and i was going to leave the rest for the data, but it wont let me do it, so i went back and selected the "exchange type swap linux 0x82 type" for the 400gb partition.
Then installed it, and now i cant find my data, and i have only 100gb of space in the hd, if i use the "disc utility" i can see the other 400gb, and change partition type, but i dont want to lose my data..
I unknowingly formatted my whole 160GB hard disk to ext4 file system from Fat while installing Ubuntu. Now my hard disk has only one ext4 partition. recover my old data.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed kubuntu 10.10, replacing an older installation. I have three hard drives one of which had all of the data I wanted to save, about 500gb. I repartitioned and formatted the other two drives and made sure that the data drive would be mounted but not formatted. When I booted into my new installation, the data drive was blank. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I had just upgraded the file system from ext2 to ext4 before starting the installation.
I've been trying to recover my lost partition with testdisk. The website has instructions for recovering a formatted partition. It looks like it's working until the instructions tell me to choose Boot and RebuildBS, which I don't see as options. Can anyone give me any advice on how to recover? How did this even happen? Has anyone had a similar issue with installation?
I just made a very stupid mistake, and in result I just deleted almost everything on my windows 7 partition. Yesterday, I upgraded to the 10.04 verion of xubuntu. Looks fine. However, I keep my data on an NTFS partition of my dual boot laptop, and am finding that I can't access it.
I have a symbolic link to that mounted partition, and when I click on it, I can see the first level of folders, but I can't execute them (even though they seem to be set to 777) and I can't open anything...

Testdisk worked perfectly, I recovered my 4 drives and retrieved data for 2 of my drives. But I still cann't retrive my important data from other drives.I guess data still exists in hard disk. I've installed wubi on my D: partition of a vista os. Vista is installed on the C: I can see the vista partition if I mount it but can only see the wubi 10.04 system files on the data partition (D: ). No option to mount it either. Also curious to know if its possible to automatically mount the c: on startup.

When I format the data partition, it only shows 2.2Tb available. I have this formatted as ext4. I know there is a 16Tb limit and I am going to repartition my drives, but shouldn't I at least be seeing 16Tb instead of 2.2

OSX and Windows are fine. but whenever i select linux, it boots directly into windows. i'm hoping i don't need to install GRUB2 to the windows partition as that would defeat the purpose of reFIt (would it not?)
I want to install Ubuntu (10.10) on the 1TB drive I need to unplug the SSD while installing it in order to dual boot by pressing F8 (the way I want it to be) so that Grub doesn't get installed on the SSD. What I want to know is can I partition the 1TB drive to install Ubuntu without any data corruption or anything? I have read that NTFS can lose data if partitioned with data already on it (I have no way of backing up my 100GB of files on the drive, as currently this IS my backup drive). What I want to do is have 900GB for files, and a 100GB partition (or partitions adding up to 100GB) for Ubuntu- what is the best way to do this? I don't need seperate partitions for ubuntu, can I install the whole thing to the 100GB partition and boot from it? Or do I need swap as well? I was thinking of making 900GB partition, 4GB partition for swap (if needed) and 96GB partition for Ubuntu (/ if I understand) as this is what the "erase entire drive" option creates.
