I just made a very stupid mistake, and in result I just deleted almost everything on my windows 7 partition. I followed this guide: [URL].. for how to access my windows partition from ubuntu and it worked, but then I decided to rm -r the whole thing thinking it was a copy. I have no restore disks or any other type of backup. I know this maybe be impossible, but is there any way to recover my data?

Now I have a unallocated space in place of these partitions. The data is still there but the entries in the partition table have been removed. So how do I recover my partition. I used the sudo parted /dev/sda -- and then rescue START END command and could get back the /data partition. But it gives me the following error while mounting the partition. mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7, missing codepage or helper program or other error. In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.
What does this mean. How to I fix this? Also when I try to recover my windows partition using parted it scans for a while and then does nothing. It doesnot ask for writing the lost partition in the partition table. What do I do?
I have 8.04 running mdadm raid 1. I selected the wrong drive in gparted and managed to hose my partition tables.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I'm a total non-geek, and am totally stuck. A long time ago, I installed ubuntu to dual-boot with windows 7, and everything was peachy. I recently decided to get rid of the ubuntu partition since I've got another laptop that I'm using exclusively for ubuntu (probably a bad decision, but I'm sticking with it.) I backed up the files I care about, and then I deleted all partitions (from windows) except the C:, leaving me with the C: and unallocated space.
Of course, when I go to boot up my computer, it gets stuck on the "loading...please wait" screen that it used to show before showing me my various boot options (several ubuntu ones, and then the windows loader at the bottom). It may say something else before loading, I can't tell since my screen is intact. I suspect my windows 7 installation is still there, but I can't boot into it. I have an HP Pavilion DV2911. I have a live disk, but my optical drive no longer works. I *can* boot from USB (and load stuff onto a flash dive) but I don't know what to do. I have no recovery disk or partition, since I installed windows 7 myself, probably badly. Where do I go from here? Is it a simple boot.exe or MSR error that I can fix? Did I do something worse than that?
I got an old Sony Vaio from a friend & wanted to keep a stripped down version of windows along side 10.04. During installation when I saw two Windows partitions. I saved the first one which was about 5 gig & deleted the other bigger partition & used ext4 on the free space for Ubuntu. I assume I only kept the recovery partition so basically I have sda1 (recovery partition)ntfs & the rest ext4. If I pick Windows from the grub menu at start-up the recovery starts but then shuts down with an error. I'm assuming its looking for the other ntfs partition to install & can't find it but I'm not sure what to do. I haven't done anything with Ubuntu yet so deleting & reinstalling is not a problem but if I do getting back to the restore menu probably will be. I don't have any disks that came with the computer either.
View 8 Replies View Related10 yr old Dell laptop with NO WORKING DRIVES. i was dual booting xp and xubuntu when i decided it was time to cut the cord. so i installed gparted and deleted my windows partition. now it won't boot. my assumption is that i never installed grub. i got a usb to ide cable so i can access the hard drive from my desktop (xp home edition). i read that grub should be in a folder called "boot". i see on my hard drive that i have: "disks", "winboot" "install", "uninstall-wubi.exe", and "xubuntu.ico". if i expand the "disks" folder, there is a "boot" folder containing another folder called "grub", but the folder is empty. is this where i install it? am i an idiot and missing something stupid? where do i download grub if i need it?

From within debian's inbuilt GParted, I deleted the partition containing windows, and now my system will not load any bootable CD (whether winXp or Gparted live cd). Everytime I restart the system with a bootable Cd, it still takes me into debian automatically.how to reformat my hard drive by deleting linux partitions and re-install winxp from bootable cd.

I want to install Ubuntu side by side with Windows. I have a big NTFS partition that has a folder with the same name as my username (let's say "joe"). Inside "joe" I have my personal files. Outside "joe" but still in the partition, there is random stuff that doesn't really belong anywhere, or now useless programs that I had to install there because the main Windows partition ran out of space. If during the Ubuntu installer I choose to use that partition as /home and make a user called "joe", will everything work fine?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI launched a script using rsync and the option -delete-before, however the destination folder was the wrong one. I noticed it only seconds after but it was still too late. In less than 5 sec rsync deleted over 200gb of data on my external hard drive... It is not in my Trash nor on the HDD trash but it's not possible that the data were ereased in less than 5 sec! (I dont know how rsync handle deletions.) I know I am really stupid but is there a way to get back all my data (mainly HD movies in mkv, mp4 and some avi)

My finger kind of slipped while the cursor was in the the same folder and I got a message saying something like:"Source file is in this destination. Cannot move. The file system says there's still only 500GB free on my 1.5TB, so the files are there but I just can't see them.how I can get them back?There's nothing in my 'Deleted Items' and I had a play with scalpel and PhotoRec and I either couldn't get them to work or they said they'd take way more time than I have.

Has anybody noticed that delete in Ubuntu 10.10 is only compatible with Ubuntu. E.g. I have a usb stick with 2 movies on it. Delete them using ubuntu's Gui just right clicking files and move to thrash so the drive looks empty. then i physically remove the drive and put it into a windows xp machine and all the files are still on the stick just put into a folder called thrash.
I also reformatted the usb stick Fat32 inside ubuntu and when i put it into the windows machine the file names were still there. (The movies were currupt and unplayable in Windows.)But still its very strange I suppose i'll just have to Blow up my usb if i ever need to destroy the data on it.. Just let me know if this has happened to you guys before. (I had Bootable Backtrack 3 on one of my old usb's that I gave to a work colleague.
I know that deleting and reformatting only deletes the indexing info for the OS but i always thought that deleted files couldn't be accessed by the average computer user.
I was dicking around today and I deleted an LVM partition, is there anyway I can restore the partition and add it back to my volume group or is it game over?

As usual I was notified that there was an update available via the Update Manager which I duly accepted.I was then confronted with a popup which advised that there was a Distribution Upgrade and that it was to be a partial upgrade.
Finding that I would not go away I accepted the data finding that 9 packages were made available and 33 unused ones were to be deleted. As this is my first experience of this is it something I need worry about and if so what should I do about it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had a working Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows 7 installed, and i was writing an image of IPCOP [URL] to the USB drive incorrectly, i did mkfs on my primary partation i.e. /dev/sda1 now i am trapped in situation, i was trying to write and usb-hdd image of ipcop on USB Drive, while doing so, i have given following commands
1. mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1
2. e2label usb-pen
3. zcat filename > /dev/sda1
* now the stupid thing i have done, is given /sda1( My HDD ) instead of /sdb1 (USB Drive), it has successfully loaded IPCOP bootable on my primary drive, and my laptop is not working now.
Laptop Partation Info:
/dev/sda1 - NTFS (Windows 7 Prof)
/dev/sda2 - NTFS

now i want to get my partitions & data back, if anybody have idea about how to get rid of this situation. The good thing i have done, is that, i didn't tried to install anything on the drive after this happened, with hopes that i can get my data back i guess that it can be recovered but confusion is that, which data recovery software to use, and for linux or windows, as i had my data on NTFS filesystem and currently there is Free Space and EXT4 partition.
I have accidentally ended up in deleting my root directory while I blindly fired command while watching movie.
I fired following command
#rm -rf ~/<SPACE>*.out
instead of this command
#rm -rf ~/*.out
Things already done:
1) Created /root directory relogged to get some of basic settings of gnome and Desktop.
2) Things went well now when I login my desktop ,gnome environment and other things looks to be working well only prompt on my terminal has changed. I can fix it any ways.
Things I want to ask:
1) I haven't studied much about contents of /root directory to best of my knowledge is it like other user's home directory with some basic configuration files for mostly required applications. SO my question is have I lost any thing important system file or something?
2) If I have lost any important configuration or system data how can I recover it without reinstalling whole system? (My opinion about this is, It is quite possible but to do so, as far as I know capabilities of linux. But I still want comments from experts before I try any things on it because I don't want to backup my whole HDD and reinstall the whole stuff again for me and also my sister's stuff in MS.)
Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.
I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.
Partition table entries are not in disk order.
On startup my computer tries to mount a partition which I deleted (called Misc) and combined with the space of another. I get this message:Quote:The disk drive for /media/Misc is not ready yet or not supported. Continue to wait, or press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery.I also notice that the folder for the drive is still listed in nautilus. How do I get rid of it once and for all?

The folder is not to be seen in Places or on my desktop. My only way of finding it is to go to terminal. But when I try to open it there I get an error saying I don't have permission to read it. In Puppy Linux and SliTaz I can easily find the partition and read it. What should I do to bring it back in Ubuntu?
