View 2 RepliesWhen I download fast and much my server freeze however if I don't download anything the server can run for weeks without problems but as soon I start downloading fast it doesn't take long until the server freeze again, I mean totally frozen so I have to manually power it down and then turn it on again. This started happening recently I think it started happening after I updated to 9.10 it have always worked perfectly before. Is there anyway to fix this? If not is there a way to downgrade back to 9.04 or 8.10 where everything were working fine?

View 9 Replies View RelatedFor some odd reason in wheezy it's not downloading the packages in the 'all' architecture, this leads to interesting issues when it comes to things like installing chromium and other packages that aren't built for one particular architecture. I've only noticed this in wheezy, and i'm not sure if this is normal. If there is any easy way to fix this, I'd be more than happy to hear. When i try to do an apt-get update, it only downloads from amd64 and not all. I've tried the mit mirror, and also the one shown there or well the default one but it still doesn't seem to be working right.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently came back to Ubuntu after a long hiatus. In the last week I've installed and re-installed 10.10 several times getting things the way I want them. Although I've installed on 3 different machines and updated them all almost completely, I'm having a problem downloading the package "openoffice.org-core" On every install on all 3 machines it stops at exactly 20.5 MB out of 27.3 Is anyone else having this problem? I'm thinking it is an issue with the repo, unless someone can think of something I'm possibly missing. This problem has been continuous over the last week, isn't a temporary connection issue.

I go through the configuration, click to 'install': Install display bars remain blank. After 2-3 minutes, black screen with scroll of attempted installation pieces and the error message: "Respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 min." Freeze.
Other posts mention problem with init. But this is happening with the install so not able to address that. No apparent md5chksum for LiveCDs. No mention of this problem in installation help guide. Does anyone know how to deal with this? If you need more info, I will provide. Though it seems this is not an unusual problem when booting an installed system, there's no mention of it happening during installation.
Has anyone ever tried tried Apt-fast? What it is claiming is quite intriguing. It is claiming that it can download 26x faster than apt-get.URL...

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Asus EEE 1000h with ubuntu 9.10 remix. A problem on first asus eee's is the keyboard: also just typed a letter once, the laptop writes it double (every 200 letters more or less). For example it looks like this while writing: "thiss is a ttest" For Windows XP I found a way to fix it: i increased the time, that limits writing letters twice by fast typing. Its not the time "Repeat Keys" Delay (Keyboard Settings "Key presses repeat when key is held down")! In fakt its the opposite: It limits pressing the key to fast. (I hope you understand the problem *g)

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy install of 10.10 went fine with the exception of Audio. If I attempt to use audio with the Rythmbox application or through Adobe Flash (in firefox), it sounds like an old fashioned 33 1/3 rpm phonograph record playing at 45 rpms. This problem has been around for a while and I had hoped that it would be cleaned up by now.
I'm running an AMD 64 processor (in 32 bit mode) and my audio card is a "Sound Blaster Live Value" (EMU10k1X). My on-board sound card is turned off in the bios. It works beautifully under Ubuntu 10.04 and FC13 with Pulse Audio.
Originally I thought that it might be a problem with Rythmbox which is now at v 0.13.1, a later version then I have been using in 10.04. However, with the Rhythmbox application off, I still get the same effect when trying to use audio in firefox. I also noticed that my cpu utilization climbs to about 80% when Rhythmbox is on.
With windows I was able to leave my computer on my lap and go for hours on end its never overheated on me and it still doesn't with windows, but with ubuntu it will last around 30-1h then it will overheat or even faster if I do anything like play a game or watch flash. And its not a problem with the new flash release because last year when I had ubuntu 10.04 it did the same thing (im on 10.10)

View 3 Replies View RelatedLike the title, that is my problem. I'm using cable modem with 3mbps. It is Linksys Docsis, wired networking. When I download a file using ubuntu 9.10, my latency time (ping time) sky rocketed to 2000ms average, while in XP none of this happens; I tried to download the same file from the same website. In ubuntu 9.10 my network setup will be, well... nothing. I'm using DHCP automatic detection. Same thing in XP.
I don't want to go back and forward using XP for the internet. Funny thing though, none of this happens while I first started ubuntu 9.10. I didn't configure anything with networking. It is the way it is from the beginning. The only thing I tried was ubuntuone. But that like months ago, and the problem I have with slow internet connection only appear this March.
I am new at ubuntu I had installed the 9.10 but couldn't get to net so stopped and right now I installed the 10.4 ubuntu but I cant get to the net. I have done install few method but the latest one said it not supported well. How to use net with my modem sagem fast 800.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been hunting around for some screen capture software in Ubuntu, for future screencasts and out of the handful I've tried I've gone with gtk-recordmydesktop. After initial problems with recording quality, I have managed to get everything working but have noticed that on playback of any captured video, is played back at a crazy speed, the frame rate is not the issue as it is on the default 15 FPS setting but still the play back is very fast.
I noticed before my tweaking that playback was normal speed, but the quality was garbage, and I found that this was because of Compiz being enabled, and I have to run gtk-recordmydesktop with "Encode on the fly" and "Full shots at every frame" enabled in order for the video playback to not be all cut up, however ever since encoding on the fly has been enabled, this has caused playback to be hilariously fast.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with Compiz enabled. With an nVidia GPU (8200 M)
I have ubuntu lucid lynx server running on an old eMachine as a fileserver. It has a big (2TB) slow (10-20 MB/s) external drive (ntfs-3g), and a small (20G) fast (60 MB/s) internal drive (ext3).
Using smbfs and vsftpd and sshd, all my data lives on the big drive and I'll see dramatic speed differences between the drives.
I'm wondering, is there a way to things up so that the external drive uses a cache on the internal drive to speed things up?
For example ... ftpd takes data from a client, and instead of slowly writing it directly to the external drive, it is written first (and quickly) to the internal drive, then, later, it is written to the external drive?
I just upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 and noticed that right click stopped working on some applications.
Usually, there are two ways to select items on the right click context menu:
a) press and release right click, hover over option, press and release again
b) press and hold right click, hover over option, release right click
I lost option a). No matter how fast I press and release the right click button, it will select the first option on the menu as soon as I release it. So for example, the first option on the context menu on the chrome browser is "back". So if I try to open the context menu it will just go back. Because it selects the back option as soon as I release the right mouse button.
So far I only noticed this on Chrome and Eclipse. Firefox and the other default ubuntu apps are working properly.
Googling it, I found some other people with this issue, but no solution. Any idea what this could be about and how to fix it?
I am having music playback issues in lucid right now. When I try to play music through any player, the music plays at a slightly higher speed - roughly 10% faster (a 3:17 song finishes in 2:5. I tried installing 10.10 and had the same problem, and I just went back to 10.04 with a fresh install and still seeing the issue. Is this a common problem for people? My sound hardware is the following as reported by lspci
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
For reference, I also have 2 other boxes in the house running 10.04 with different sound hardware with no issues. Their hardware are:
00:06.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP55 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
I'm doing a little python app for encoding .avi from dvds. I know there are a few really good applications out there that do the same thing but I wanted something simple with less faff. The application has 3 settings: Fast, Medium, and Slow. These are for the varying quality rips. For file format I was thinking either lavc or Xvid.
So my first question is, which is better? I really don't know anything about it and I haven't found a decent site that compares them. And secondly what are the best settings for a DVD rip for a Fast Rip, a 'Best of Both' Rip, and a Best Quality Rip? If I've missed any factors in this, please let me know, I'm new to the DVD ripping game. I have no intentions of distributing the movies, they are for my own uses.
I have a Dell OptiPlex GX1 (CPU: Pentium II, 500Mhz). It's very old, and a while ago I installed an old version of Ubuntu on it. While it is switched on and booted up, everything is fine, however the trouble is when it is switched off, or just in BIOS.
The BIOS clock appears to be running at about 60x speed (eg minutes like seconds, hours like minutes). This happens both when switched off and when observing the clock from the BIOS menu. I really don't know what to do about this, and it's causing alot of problems, I've even had it get to the point where the system clock reset itself and would not recognise the OS as valid.
Just today I started getting notices about lack of disk space on my system. After much digging I found that .xsession-errors and .xsession-errors.old were taking nearly 70GB of space combined. The primary message I'm getting over and over again is: SSL_Write: I/O Error I have been unable to figure out what's causing this error.
