Ubuntu :: Skip The Nautilus Overwrite Prompt?
Oct 14, 2010
Is it possible to have Nautilus stop prompting me to confirm file overwrites when copying files? This would be very practical (with the obvious risk, but still). I have not been able to find this somewhere...

I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.

Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

I've added a new Nautilus action and I'd like to use another icon that those provided in the nautilus item con list (see attachment).
But whatever image I try (some PNG or even SVG files) I can't get them to be displayed. It seems there is a very special format, size, type to match the Gnome/GTK+/Nautilus icon requirements...

Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:
http://i39.tinypic.com/2qdsyll.jpg
I'd rather not have to download the source of nautilus and edit the code / compile it myself.
By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.
I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.

Strange problem from a couple of months, Audio files skip every now and then. Sounds like buffering issue. MP3, Wav etc. all skip on VLC, Qamp etc, once in a minute or two, its quite random. i thought there was CPU spikes or something by some program i installed. I checked the system monitor and found no unusual spikes in the CPU... so i am thinking this must be the audio buffers. Can i set the buffers for the for the driver or something? my machine is: Dell Inspiron Mini netbook Ubutu lucid 10.04, 2bg RAM, 260GB HDD

I was transferring data from one computer to my laptop and crash error came up on my laptop...
Error 1:
Nautilus-2.32.0-1.fc14 Reason: Process/usr/bin/nautilus was killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
Error 2:
Openoffice.Org-Brand Crash
Reason: Process/usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin was killed by signal (SIGABRT)
What could be the problem? Is it serious issue? I have been having security issues with Windows and are those issues begun once again? I have been under targeted attack since 2005.

I'm running maverick netbook remix on an asus1015pe eeepc. I recently switched from the unity interface to "ubuntu netbook 2d" - the one they say resembles the 10.04 netbook interface. I really like it - fast, crisp, and intuitive - but there's one thing I'd like to change, if possible. Right after login, there's a full-screen translucent menu that covers the 1st workspace. If I wait a few seconds, I can make it go away by clicking the "desktop" button in the bottom left, but is there any way to make it so it doesn't appear at all? so that after login it goes right to a clean desktop.

i have a duel boot of windows and ubuntu, but recently i got a virus, but this things is leach like in appearance. I tried reinstalling windows, then reformatting the drive and reinstalling windows but i still have this same virus? This is dead creepy for me because windows cant read any of the other partitions, which are all formatted for linux, in formats which windows does not have the capability to read. So i dont understand how this could have happened. There are many things that i am still to try -- including completely overwriting the MBR with a GRUB in case the virus somehow resides in there?? But i have decided to give up on windows from now, because, despite all the actions i have taken, it has failed me repeatedly. But having had these viruses 3 times, i have noticed something, the first time i had a virus was my fault, because i left my computer insecure.
After i formatted my HDD following that virus, i noticed i had 10gb of space robbed from me, disk utility believed i had a 160gb drive, but Gparted and everything else told me that i only had 149.7gb of space??? now after this virus - which logically couldn't have happened without someone directly attempting to tunnel my computer as i had so much extra security - i lost 6gb of space from my HDD?? Sounds odd?
THE QUERY: So i want to know if (from ubuntu) it is possible to do a secure format (similar to with a mac - were it completely overwrites everything, instead of just deleting the links) although, possibly i am not going back to windows, ever.

I've been trying for a long while to figure out why aptitude overwrites /etc/sudoers ? Each time I run
$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
my /etc/sudoers is reset. This is really annoying because I have it setup so that mythtv can shutdown and restart automatically. The line in /etc/sudoers that gets deleted is:
%mythtv ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/mythshutdown, /bin/sh, /usr/bin/setwakeup.sh, /
sbin/reboot, /sbin/shutdown
When the line is missing my Ubuntu 10.04 does not shut down at all because of missing rights to do so. Does anyone have a clue why this is happening? I thought /etc-files were sacred for others than root, but it seems I'm wrong. Of course I have edited sudoers with visudo.

Im using the following system setup: When I boot my business computer, I can choose between 3 setups, 2 Windows XP, 1 DOS. I installed Ubuntu with 1 Windows XP system which looks something like this:
System 1 (XP)
System 2 (XP) --> after selection, Im able to choose between the XP system and Ubuntu on a new screen
System 3 (DOS)
Now interesting for me is obviously System 2. After I select System 2, I can choose between XP and Ubuntu. After I select Ubuntu, I come to another screen, where I can choose again between 4 Ubuntu entries with different kernel versions (including their recovery modes) AND both XP systems (yes, again). I installed Grub Customizer. I removed all the XP entries and all but 1 Ubuntu entry from this screen. I also set the timeout until booting Ubuntu on this screen to 1 second to start as quick as possible and Ubuntu boots fine.
My question now is, is there a way to skip the screen with former kernel and XP selection and boot Ubuntu directly after already choosing (between XP and Ubuntu) on the first screen? I know, 1 second "waiting" is not too bad but skipping the screen completly would be superb.

I've got a netbook which dual boots ubuntu and windows xp using grub legacy. Now I'd like to overwrite my current ubuntu 10.04 installation with a brand new 11.04. Grub is my main preoccupation: I'm worried installing 11.04 over the old installation may cause quite a mess due to the two grubs not going along well. Is it safe* to overwrite the older ubuntu installation with the new using the "traditional" bootable USB method?
*safety includes windows accessibility and data preservation.
I don't really understand how does grub work.

I need to list a directory recursively but I want to skip subdirs that were already mounted. There are 2 cases:
a) a filesystem was mounted twice, like in this example:
- "/dev/sda2" was mounted on "/mnt/mnt_point1"
- "/dev/sda2" was mounted on "/mnt/mnt_point2"
I want to list "/mnt" but descend only in "/mnt/mnt_point1"
b) part of the file hierarchy was remounted somewhere else, with "mount --bind":
- "mount --bind /home/user/tmp/test /home/user/tmp/mounted_test"
I want to list "/home/user/tmp" but descend only in "test" "statfs" and "statvfs" don't offer any information to discern if a dir was mounted twice. One solution would be to read "/etc/mtab" (as "find" command does it) and perform some checks, but I think that this is pretty expensive (one has to read /etc/mtab every time one encounters a dir; if this file is read only when program starts, a mount could occur in between reads, so that the program will be inaccurate). Another solution would be to filter kernel events (via libudev or Netlink) and do this reading of /etc/mtab only when a MOUNT event was issued.

This seems to be a strange problem, and I have searched high and low for answers. Since Ubuntu 10.04 I have been upgrading via LiveCD and had no problems, however after an upgrade to 11.04 I now have Grub 1.99 giving me a list of versions to chose from before the OS loads. Now, call me fussy, but I don't want this, I just want to turn on my PC and go straight into Ubuntu as it always has done. I have tried various fixes such as looking for old Kernals in Package Manager, but no old kernals show up! Same for Ubuntu-Tweak, nothing shows up when I click on clean kernals.
