Ubuntu Installation :: How To Overwrite Windows Vista With Windows XP / Without Harming Ubuntu?

Sep 10, 2010

I would like to replace Windows Vista with Windows XP without uninstalling my Ubuntu partition. I use ubuntu 90% of the time, but would like to have XP for games and for my printer. Is there a way to just overwrite Vista and not Ubuntu? I booted my XP disk and it came up with many different partitions, 4. I wasn't sure what my Vista one was named or which one I should overwrite.

Fedora :: RPM That Can Install Somewhere Which Won't Overwrite Current 3.5 Installation?

Jan 21, 2010

It looks like firefox 3.6 was released today - fantastic, except for those of us who develop/test websites (yeah, usually FF is pretty stable between versions, but still...). I'd like to be able to install 3.6 under F12 alongside my current FF 3.5 , running under separate profiles (preferably with a 64-bit build). Is my only option to download it from mozilla.org, and just install it under /opt/ or somesuch place? Is there an RPM that I can install somewhere which won't overwrite my current 3.5 installation?

Ubuntu :: No Dual Boot - Windows Overwrite Grub File

Jan 5, 2011

I've recently left Windows behind for good and have come to Linux (Ubuntu.) However, I've run into problems after trying to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu. When I restarted my computer, I got a black screen with white text reading "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported". I have the Ubuntu live cd and was able to try Ubuntu without having to install it, but after I put in a flash drive with Windows 7 on it, the Ubuntu CD has stopped working entirely.

The weird thing is, the computer that I installed Ubuntu on, already had Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it. And every OS was booting successfully. The reason I deleted the Ubuntu that was already on the computer, is because there were many different versions. I wanted to do a clean sweep and only have Ubuntu and Windows 7 installed on the computer. I know that if you try to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu, Windows will overwrite the GRUB file, making it unable to dual boot.

General :: Windows - Linux: Can't Overwrite Files On Samba Store

Jun 10, 2010

I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:

[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/si_storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`

And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: //192.168.1.2/SI_STORAGE /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser, password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: Safe To Completely Overwrite 10.04 With 11.04?

Apr 24, 2011

I've got a netbook which dual boots ubuntu and windows xp using grub legacy. Now I'd like to overwrite my current ubuntu 10.04 installation with a brand new 11.04. Grub is my main preoccupation: I'm worried installing 11.04 over the old installation may cause quite a mess due to the two grubs not going along well. Is it safe* to overwrite the older ubuntu installation with the new using the "traditional" bootable USB method?
*safety includes windows accessibility and data preservation.
I don't really understand how does grub work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 Overwrite Grub On Upgrade From 8.04 To 10.4?

Jun 21, 2010

I have been running a dual boot XP and Ubuntu 8.04 on two separate hard drives for a while now without any problems. I used the method posted http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...light=dualboot. I will be upgrading to 10.4 soon (probably after the re-spin in July) and was wondering if I will have problems after upgrading dual booting.

I do not know if while upgrading Grub remains or if Grub2 tries to overwrite. I have read that Grub2 will try to install onto all partitions and hard drives in a fresh install but do not know about upgrading. If it does try I think I need to put it in hda,1 which is the primary drive where Ubuntu is located.

This is not something I have been able to find the answer to with google. I also have Kubuntu on the system which I can change with session manager and am not sure what will happen to that once I upgrade Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Use A Windows-based Recovery Partition On A Dual-boot Computer To Overwrite Partition And Remove GRUB Loader?

Mar 9, 2010

is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

Ubuntu Installation :: Resizing Windows Partition - Install Files On A Non Windows NTFS Partition

Jul 22, 2010

Now however its not letting me resize the Windows partition, mounted or unmounted. It currently occupies the whole disk. I would rather not reinstall the whole thing over again, but I will if I have to. Isnt there an easy way to shrink a Windows partition? I swear Ive done this before and it wasnt this hard. Could it be a problem with the Mint installer that now asks me if I want to unmount my disks before it goes into install mode? On this PC I would like to have

Windows XP
Mint
Ubuntu-Studio
Edubuntu
One of the E17 OSs
Puppy Linux (to create a remix)

I am probably going to put most of the linux partitions on the second laptop drive but I want to install files on a non WIndows NTFS partition.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Over Windows 7?

I've installed Ubuntu on other computers about 6 times or so, but always over a Windows XP or Vista operating system, this is the first time I've tried to install it over Windows 7.I tried using a CD and a boot stick, but it still boots into Windows rather than booting from the device. I've checked the boot setup and it's setup right, to boot from the USB/CD depending on which one I attempted, but no cigar, still loads up Windows instead. I'm at a loss. The computer is an Acer Aspire 5251-1513AMD processor V120 2.2GHz2 G DDR3 RAM

After I formatted this laptop, I tried to install Windows 7 again using the CD that came with the laptop, but an error kept coming up. I got impatient and installed Ubuntu instead. Now, I want to install Windows 7 alongside Ubuntu. How do I do that?

I just installed Linux, but could'nt manage wine to work with .exe files, the problem is that when i open up a .exe it shutsdown 2 seconds after it opens.Well i decided to uninstall Ubuntu and install Windows 7 again, but then again i got a problem. I plugged in my Windows 7 disk and restarted my computer then getting the boot cofnigure up, i changed the boot settings to "boot from CD/DVD" but it wasnt able to boot from the pc. I tried to read some guides and they all said that i should reboot with some "floppy" linux cd type in "fdisk" in a command prompt, witch i have no clue what is. I tried to put my Ubuntu cd in my computer and boot from that but that did'nt work. Am i stuck with Ubuntu? I won't give a da** if i could fix the wine problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install On Windows Virtual PC?

I'd like to install the 10.04 32-bit inside a Windows7 VirtualPC.Got the cd burned, and my virt-pc set up (1 GB RAM, 16GB fixed size virtual disk).I started up the virt-pc, and it automatically booted up from the cd, getting as far as asking me what language I'd like to use, but after selecting English and pressing enter, the virtual-pc window just blinked away.Subsequent attempts to start the virt-pc result in a window popping up, listing some text (free memory, can't read the rest -- too fast), which then blinks away almost immediately.

I was using these URL... directions as a guide.Anyone know if this should work? Or should I go with VirtualBox?The host pc is running 64-bit-win7-pro, amd quad-core, 4gb ram, lots of free disk, in case any of that matters.

Ubuntu Installation :: Restoring MBR After Windows 7 Install?

Jul 23, 2010

I hope this is the right sub-forum for a question like this. It seemed like the best match from what I could find, but my issue stems from installing Windows 7 after I already had Ubuntu installed. I don't know what details are important, so I'll be as thorough as I can. I was running Ubuntu 9.10 on a machine with two SATA hard drives. I was only using one since Ubuntu kept complaining that the second drive was having some issues. The drive with Ubuntu had only two partitions, one tiny one for the swap and the rest of the hard drive was the second partition.

I needed to install Windows for my work, and since I was not very familiar with the whole partition thing (which is the reason why the hard drive was basically one huge partition) I decided to follow this guide: [URL]... I backed up my important data, I used a live CD to create a new partition for windows, I backed up my MBR using the command given, and installed Windows 7. Everything went pretty smoothly. Now, whenever I boot up I don't get a choice of what OS to boot, it just goes straight to Windows, as expected.

I used the same live CD to restore the MBR using the command given on the guide, but I get this error:
dd: opening `/media/sda/mbr.bin': No such file or directory

[Code]...
