Ubuntu :: Since Upgrading To Maverick - No Longer Have A Shade Animation
Nov 4, 2010
Since upgrading to maverick, I no longer have a shade animation. It was working splendidly in Lucid, but now, if I trigger the shade, it just snaps up. No nice, smooth rollup that I like. Screenshot attached of my compiz animation settings page.

I noticed that php-mode isn't in maverick (and wasn't in lucid either).
[URL]
That's a shame because it was nice and easy to install that way. Any ideas why it was removed?
Am wondering if there is an Ubuntu recommended way to install emacs modes apart from [URL]

As seen in the screenshot, my update manager won't let me mark the proposed kernel updates for installation.I have heard that I would be able to mark them after a few days have passed ( I don't know the reason, though). Well, now it's been 3 weeks that I have them as "proposed updates" and I still can't mark them.I decided to run apt-get upgrade in the terminal and here is the output:
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
[code]....

After upgrading to Maverick, I have noticed that when I'm streaming from a site on the Internet with mplayer in wave format, my processor pegs at near 100%. I have to nice it to get it to relent, but this is a new issue for the upgrade. Streaming mp3 doesn't register very much.

While upgrading to 10.10, I opted to keep my apache conf files as they were (since I forgot to back them up before starting) and now apache isn't happy at all. At first it just wasn't working, so I backed up my entire /etc/apache2 dir, ran
Code:
'sudo apt-get purge apache2'
and then deleted all references and left over config files, then ran
Code:
'sudo apt-get install apache2'
and still apache wasn't working - in fact it did not seem to properly/completely reinstall with all dependencies.
Next I went through in Synaptic and removed a bunch of stuff myself, tried another apt-get purge and install, and still nada. Next I tried:
Code:
'sudo aptitude purge apache2'
which seemed to run a little more robustly. So naturally next I ran
Code:
'sudo aptitude install apache2'
and though it seemed to install everything appropriately, apache was not started and trying to run
Code:
'sudo service apache2 start'
I get an unrecognised service error.
When trying to directly run
Code:
'sudo /usr/sbin/apache2'
I get
Code:
'apache2: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: No such file or directory'
Which is true, it does not exist but I don't understand why it's not reinstalling properly. Luckily this is just a local test server and I don't need to right now, but it would be good to get it back up and running. Could this really be all because I didn't replace my old files with the new conf files?

I am unable to shutdown ubuntu after upgrading it to Maverick Meerkat.
I can do Ctrl + Alt + F4 and then Ctrl + Alt + Del but it does not let me use the taskbar button. When I press the shutdown button it just takes me to login page.

After upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04 Conky no longer displays as it used to.I believe it has something to do with own_window_type set to override. If I change this to desktop, dock, or normal it displays.Conky starts without any errors but just does not display anything.
The best lead I had thus far was that it was something in ~/.cache, but even after deleting that and having it recreated still no cigar.

After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 my System no longer boots. I had a Dual-Boot System. On Boot I get - "error : the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found grub rescue> (prompt):
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/normal.mod' (I get the same error)
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/ext2.mod' (I get 'The symbol 'grub_xasprinf' not found)
If I run ls /boot (The Kernel File Names look Ok)
If I run in Rescue Mode it Reports (The installer could not find any partitions, so you will not be able to mount a root file system. This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. If you wish, you may investigate this from a shell in the installer environment.) I ran the recommended reporting script and got the following output:-
Code:
= Boot Info Summary: =
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #4 for /boot/grub.
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb
=> Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdd <<< This is my USB Flashdrive .....

I've been having a problem with intermittent stuttering in video and audio playback since upgrading to Maverick (it also happened when I briefly installed Lucid). It started out as the odd skip every 20 minutes or so but now it can happen 5 or 6 times in 10 minutes when watching a film. I've tried:
reformatting and clean installing using a half-dozen players installing every codec I could think of (only after the normal ones wouldn't help) diangosing my 3 hard drives (the problem occurs on them all and they're not in a RAID setup) changing then changing back my video drivers disabling pulseaudio and ubuntuone-sync (these were not installed in my previous, working setup) looking at every relevant log file (mplayer, smplayer, demsg...) I know of running ubuntu's testing utilities I'm out of ideas. Going back to Jaunty is the only solution I'm pretty sure will work but it's not exactly ideal. It will be a few months a least before I'm able to install a completely new distro.

I just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid and my system will no longer boot. The upgrade completed without any error messages, but upon reboot, it hangs at the loading screen. I cannot start the system in recovery mode either. Same issue happens. To get to the command line, I've appended:
init=/bin/bash
to the kernel line in grub. I then remount so I have r/w access.
It appears to be an issue with udev. While the loading screen is "loading," udevd_work scrolls a bunch of stuff that's too fast for me to read (nor can I copy and paste it).
/var/log/udev isn't showing any recent errors, only messages from before the upgrade.

Ever sense i updated to 10.4 skype's video calling for me has turned a light shade of blue, nothing that really tampers with my call, just annoying the snot out of me because the person im talking to is blue.
Also I do not think its my cameras drivers because not only am I a shade of blue, but the person I am talking to is also blue and they say that I on their screen look fine. When i run a camera test with skype everything is a shade of blue as well.
I cannot for the life of me find a way to test my camera outside of skype.

I would like to upgrade my linux distro, since I'm using Karmic Koala and it is no longer supported anymore. However, upgrading via the updater always breaks my system, so I want to do a clean install. However, I have a LOT of programs installed in this machine, including a good number of games. Otherwise I think most of my data is neatly confined to my home folder, which I can easily transfer via external hard drive.
How do I get all my programs over, however? Like my PDF printer, for example, or all my games, or Inkscape, or Skype, or any number of things that I have installed. Especially WICD. I can never get my wireless internet to work without WICD. I will make a list of my programs beforehand, just in case something goes wrong, but is there any kind of less painful and time-consuming way to do this than going back and installing every program all over again from scratch?

I upgraded my openSUSE 11.2 KDE to version 11.3, and now my Canon Pixma ip1800 Printer no longer prints. It appears to me that the upgrade may have removed one or more files that the printer needs, but I don't know.

When trying from the link which was in the applications menu, and manually from terminal I receive the following errors:
Code:
I have since tried the HOWTO: Install Azureus (newest, non-repo way) method of installing Vuze/Azureus, which I think is what I set up for 9.04, and also a synaptic complete removal and reinstall which didn't work.
I have an .azureus folder in my home dir which I would like to keep because it contains my settings and half downloaded torrents etc.
I would be happy to use the the synaptic packaged version of Vuze because it is much more up to date than it has been in the past.

I recently upgraded from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14. Now, when I run the Software Update graphical utility, I am getting an authorization failure. I tried using yum update from a command line after issue the SU command and it seemed to work. I would much prefer to use the graphical utility but can't figure out how to give myself permission for this. I also noticed that my graphical shutdown utility is now disabled (grayed out).

I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and everything went fine. No problems other then there is no animation while booting. It just goes to the login screen (ugly tree ) . I have a feeling it has something to do with the nvidia card (fx5200) i am using the 173 driver. Because the screen switches resloutions and no Nvidia screen is showing as in the previous version 9.10. Any ideas on how to fix this?? I did a search and came up with no good answers yet. The Nvidia seems to be working fine everywhere else so far.

I recently performed a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a new hard disk, and I've noticed that for whatever reason, the animation isn't working on the default Ubuntu splash screen on startup. It does work on the splash screen when I shut down, oddly enough.
I haven't tried to change my splash screen or messed around with resolution settings or anything like that, so I'm not sure what to check.

In an attempt to install Tupi, I downloaded the tar.gz from here. I would've loved to just install the .deb, but it seems that there's only an i386 deb available.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to install the tar.gz package so I was hoping that someone can help me out with that.
Also, say I get this installed from the tar.gz, will updates for the program appear in my update manager?

I've recently switched from Firefox to Chromium for my browsing and am satisfied other than a persistent issue I have with Flash content. Almost all flash animation and video flickers and "stumbles" (especially when scrolling) in the Chromium and Google Chrome browsers. This issue is not at all present in Firefox. Chromium reports it's using libflashplugin.so which I believe is the "system plugin" and not the built-in plug-in.
Currently I'm using the Chromium build available in the Lucid repository, the adobe-flashplugin and ATI proprietary drivers installed. I have tried the Chromium daily build and the issue still persisted. I've considered trying Lightspark but have read that it's not a very "complete" plug-in.I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Flash plug-in available from Synaptic and even updated it directly from Adobe's website.

I recently downloaded the Vienna3 mouse cursor theme and there is an animation where it turns into some cool looking thing when I drag a window. but early this morning I noticed that it has stopped working. I also installed the "slick black" theme that I got from gnome-look.org the night before but I customized it to run the Vienna cursor theme. but that drag animation was still working. Additional info: I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and compiz fusion and I have gtk 2 set as my decorator

I am working on a presentation in OpenOffice's Impress. When I try to put animation in either the text or pics, it suddenly quits. I then click into it again and it does a recovery. Has anyone had this problem? What have you done about it? I am on a Dell optiplex 745 dual core with 2 gig memory operating in 10.04.
