I upgraded my openSUSE 11.2 KDE to version 11.3, and now my Canon Pixma ip1800 Printer no longer prints. It appears to me that the upgrade may have removed one or more files that the printer needs, but I don't know.
View 6 RepliesHave recently updated 10.04 with latest updates which included a new kernel and the printer no longer works. In-fact I can't even define the printer and I don't have a printer installed, the install script can't locate the printer on the USB. I have a cannon MP640.
I can print OK through windowsXP on virtualbox, printer is found OK.
Everything was fine until latest update.
Also my USB TV card doesn't work anymore, it also was OK before the update.
for some reason, ubuntu cant see it anymore. so how to fix? windows still prints to this printer on the network. I deleted the printer in ubuntu and tried to redetect and now it says no printer at that address.
before I deleted it, I recall it saying something about the backend had failed?
For some reason, just shortly ago, the terminals, konsole, etc. will not accept the lowercase letter 'e' as input for some reason, not even when pasting, e.g.
a paste of file:///usr/share/applications/kde4/konsole.desktop
becomes fil:///usr/shar/applications/kd4/konsol.dsktop
on the command line. Weird.
For everything else I have tried at this point on the computer, the lowercase letter 'e' is just fine (this message being an example);Has some configuration file for terminals (konsole, xterm, Yakuake) or whatever got messed up and I need to correct it?
I have new install of 11.4 X86_64 which has been working fine up until this morning. Now when I boot and get the kdm login screen, the keyboardis no longer working, nothing appears from typing, no key sequences are recognized. The mouse works fine and when I go Console Login, the keyboard works fine.The mouse and keyboard are both Logictech wireless using the Logitech unifying usb link. As I said, it was working fine until this morning.I have no idea how to even diagnose this.

But when I try printing a multi-page document, it only prints the first page, and then I get a message saying it may be disconnected. It's not, but I waited a loooooong time and the successive pages didn't spit out.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently decided to switch the first of four machines on my LAN from windows to Linux (PB I Media 1gb ram, 160hdd Intel Core2 Duo 6300 1.86ghz. After a couple of weeks distro hopping I have decided that I like OpenSuse 11.4.
I have an Epson Styus SX515w connected to my router via wifi. I googled the subject and downloaded this driver from the Avasys website. epson-inkjet-printer-stylus-tx550w-series-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm. I checked the documentation and my model is supported. So I installed the rpm from a local directory via Yast.
Then I go into Yast > Hardware > Printers, (I have to disable the firewall first so Yast can find the printer on the LAN.) The New Printer Config Wizard shows it as Model: Epson sx510w Connection: ipd:/192.168.2.4.515/PASSTHRU Description: Epson Epson Stylus SX510w. (mine is a 515w). Anyho, Yast cannot find any matching drivers. If I click "Find More" Yast finds Epson drivers but no for my model. I've tried different search strings too.
So my question is. How do I tell Yast to use the driver I have installed?
I checked in Yast > Software and it lists the driver as installed I also ran this command in terminal user@linux-rk0o:~> rpm -qi epson-inkjet-printer-stylus-tx550w-series-1.0.0-1lsb3.2.i486
The resulting output confirms the package is installed.

At the mo my printer works but spits out pages of text (looks like some kind of commands)
After upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04 Conky no longer displays as it used to.I believe it has something to do with own_window_type set to override. If I change this to desktop, dock, or normal it displays.Conky starts without any errors but just does not display anything.
The best lead I had thus far was that it was something in ~/.cache, but even after deleting that and having it recreated still no cigar.
After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 my System no longer boots. I had a Dual-Boot System. On Boot I get - "error : the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found grub rescue> (prompt):
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/normal.mod' (I get the same error)
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/ext2.mod' (I get 'The symbol 'grub_xasprinf' not found)
If I run ls /boot (The Kernel File Names look Ok)
If I run in Rescue Mode it Reports (The installer could not find any partitions, so you will not be able to mount a root file system. This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. Since upgrading to maverick, I no longer have a shade animation. It was working splendidly in Lucid, but now, if I trigger the shade, it just snaps up. No nice, smooth rollup that I like. Screenshot attached of my compiz animation settings page.

I have avast anti virus installed and it has been fine, but yesterday i downloaded updates for it and since then whenever i try to run the program i get an error and it refuses to run.
I just upgraded from Karmic to Lucid and my system will no longer boot. The upgrade completed without any error messages, but upon reboot, it hangs at the loading screen. I cannot start the system in recovery mode either. Same issue happens. To get to the command line, I've appended:
init=/bin/bash
to the kernel line in grub. I then remount so I have r/w access.
It appears to be an issue with udev. While the loading screen is "loading," udevd_work scrolls a bunch of stuff that's too fast for me to read (nor can I copy and paste it).
/var/log/udev isn't showing any recent errors, only messages from before the upgrade.
I recently upgraded from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14. Now, when I run the Software Update graphical utility, I am getting an authorization failure. I tried using yum update from a command line after issue the SU command and it seemed to work. I would much prefer to use the graphical utility but can't figure out how to give myself permission for this. I also noticed that my graphical shutdown utility is now disabled (grayed out).

I tryed to reinstall it and it said it is already installed and to cancel.

Everytime I try it says "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address".It was working fine before and even when I reboot into an older kernel it still doesn't work.I'm using a Belking Wireless G adapter.I would have tried downloading another network manager but since I can't even access the internet I'm stuck with changing current settings and nothing seems to work.

I installed it, used this post install guide http://blog.thesilentnumber.me/2010/...de-what-to.htm, and it has been working like a charm since then. When I went to log on to it today, the log in screen comes up as normal, I enter my password, ubuntu thinks about it for a minute, and then sends me right back to the log in screen.

I just want to see if this is fixable before I wipe the partition and reload ubuntu.
I installed Lucid several days ago, and have just noticed that SCIM no longer works. I need it for Japanese input, but cannot turn on Anthy. The manual is either nonexistent or extremely terse with a lot of presupposed knowledge.I've installed German, Russian and Spanish language support, along with CJK. I installed virtualbox a couple of days ago and had used Windows 7 (guest) multiple times without anproblems. However, upon attempting to share folders, it will no longer boot and I get this error:

My dual monitor no longer works. I downloaded the new patch for my video card and apparently the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 and Linux do not like each other?
1)Should I just remove the driver?
2)If I did would the old driver pick up because although it had a few faults, at least I could use both monitors after a lil engineering
3)If I were to remove the driver, where would I do it from?
I got an error during the upgrade but chose to let the upgrade complete. Now my Firefox won't lauch. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it from the Terminal and got the following:Quote:

I would like to upgrade my linux distro, since I'm using Karmic Koala and it is no longer supported anymore. However, upgrading via the updater always breaks my system, so I want to do a clean install. However, I have a LOT of programs installed in this machine, including a good number of games. Otherwise I think most of my data is neatly confined to my home folder, which I can easily transfer via external hard drive.
How do I get all my programs over, however? Like my PDF printer, for example, or all my games, or Inkscape, or Skype, or any number of things that I have installed. Especially WICD. I can never get my wireless internet to work without WICD. I will make a list of my programs beforehand, just in case something goes wrong, but is there any kind of less painful and time-consuming way to do this than going back and installing every program all over again from scratch?
There is something strange going on with Pidgin in Debian 6. I have just installed the system, then Pidgin, then configured my MSN accounts and chatted; but after rebooting, it no longer works. It just hangs while trying to connect - this is what I see from strace:

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and the sound on my machine no longer works. I was previously using the OSS for sound. I'd like the sound solution that requires the minimal effort and I don't necessarily need to run OSS again. Ubuntu is installed on a Dell Optiplex 960.

I upgraded my system from 8.04 to 10.04.Now I keep getting errors saying that my adobe nonfree installation is bad. The worst part is that when I try to uninstall the Adobe package to start from scratch, it says that the problem is so bad that it can't be uninstalled, but must be re-installed.Of course when I try to re-install it, I get errors saying it's corrupt.I'm caught in a chicken and egg situation here.
Also, sound no longer works on my system.I think this is most likely a symptom of the first problem, but I'll just put it out there.I've read the other threads explaining how to fix this, but nothing works.
I have a 3rd gen iPod shuffle which I had loaded music onto in Banshee a few months ago. It worked fine until yesterday when I decided I wanted to delete a few tracks from it. When I mounted it and opened Banshee it said I had to rebuild the database or something to that effect. I did that and could then see all the tracks on it. I went ahead and deleted the few tracks I wanted to remove, and ejected it. When I tried to use it, it says "please use itunes to sync music." A little confused, I went back and deleted all the tracks on it (using Banshee) and reloaded some tracks. It still won't work.
I haven't changed anything in Banshee (as far as I know) and I have never plugged the shuffle into itunes. I've always used Banshee to manage it and never had a problem. The only major change I can think of that might have made a difference is upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.
Simple Backup no longer works. (Says backup is started in the background... then nothing) What are some good comparable alternatives?
