Ubuntu Installation :: Broke Apache When Upgrading To Maverick
Oct 13, 2010
While upgrading to 10.10, I opted to keep my apache conf files as they were (since I forgot to back them up before starting) and now apache isn't happy at all. At first it just wasn't working, so I backed up my entire /etc/apache2 dir, ran
Code:
'sudo apt-get purge apache2'
and then deleted all references and left over config files, then ran
Code:
'sudo apt-get install apache2'
and still apache wasn't working - in fact it did not seem to properly/completely reinstall with all dependencies.
Next I went through in Synaptic and removed a bunch of stuff myself, tried another apt-get purge and install, and still nada. Next I tried:
Code:
'sudo aptitude purge apache2'
which seemed to run a little more robustly. So naturally next I ran
Code:
'sudo aptitude install apache2'
and though it seemed to install everything appropriately, apache was not started and trying to run
Code:
'sudo service apache2 start'
I get an unrecognised service error.
When trying to directly run
Code:
'sudo /usr/sbin/apache2'
I get
Code:
'apache2: Could not open configuration file /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: No such file or directory'
Which is true, it does not exist but I don't understand why it's not reinstalling properly. Luckily this is just a local test server and I don't need to right now, but it would be good to get it back up and running. Could this really be all because I didn't replace my old files with the new conf files?

As seen in the screenshot, my update manager won't let me mark the proposed kernel updates for installation.I have heard that I would be able to mark them after a few days have passed ( I don't know the reason, though). Well, now it's been 3 weeks that I have them as "proposed updates" and I still can't mark them.I decided to run apt-get upgrade in the terminal and here is the output:
Code:
~$ sudo apt-get upgrade

After upgrading to Maverick, I have noticed that when I'm streaming from a site on the Internet with mplayer in wave format, my processor pegs at near 100%. I have to nice it to get it to relent, but this is a new issue for the upgrade. Streaming mp3 doesn't register very much.

Since upgrading to maverick, I no longer have a shade animation. It was working splendidly in Lucid, but now, if I trigger the shade, it just snaps up. No nice, smooth rollup that I like. Screenshot attached of my compiz animation settings page.

I am unable to shutdown ubuntu after upgrading it to Maverick Meerkat.
I can do Ctrl + Alt + F4 and then Ctrl + Alt + Del but it does not let me use the taskbar button. When I press the shutdown button it just takes me to login page.

I'm attempting to get svn over apache running on maverick server. Here is my site config
Code:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName common.subversion.xxx.xxx
ServerAdmin xxxxxxx
DocumentRoot /var/www/SVN
AddExternalAuth pwauth /usr/sbin/pwauth
SetExternalAuthMethod pwauth pipe
[Code]...
While the redhat posts indicated selinux, when I checked it with sestatus (after first installing sestatus), it came back disabled. So what is locking down the /var/www directory?

I've been having a problem with intermittent stuttering in video and audio playback since upgrading to Maverick (it also happened when I briefly installed Lucid). It started out as the odd skip every 20 minutes or so but now it can happen 5 or 6 times in 10 minutes when watching a film. I've tried:
reformatting and clean installing using a half-dozen players installing every codec I could think of (only after the normal ones wouldn't help) diangosing my 3 hard drives (the problem occurs on them all and they're not in a RAID setup) changing then changing back my video drivers disabling pulseaudio and ubuntuone-sync (these were not installed in my previous, working setup) looking at every relevant log file (mplayer, smplayer, demsg...) I know of running ubuntu's testing utilities I'm out of ideas. Going back to Jaunty is the only solution I'm pretty sure will work but it's not exactly ideal. It will be a few months a least before I'm able to install a completely new distro.

My Server is 8.04 (hardy) and Apache is 2.2.8. I have been receiving emails from Apache each time a new stable release is available, most of which say you should install them due to security issues. The current stable release of apache being offered is 2.2.17
Q1) Do you recommend I upgrade from Apache 2.2.8 to 2.2.17?
Q2) Does this come automatically with my regular updates via Update Manager once the Ubuntu community thinks its stable enough (it appears that it doesn't)?
Q3) What is the best way to install the update?
Q4) Any concerns about installing it into a live environment? I don't have a development platform to try it in first.

I'm currently upgrading my clients' CentOS 5 installation to use httpd-2.2.14 as we need it for the server to past some of the Hardware checks used in the PCI [Payment Card Industry] security test. I was basically wondering if anyone had the standard CentOS 'configure options' for building httpd/Apache so I could copy them to ensure it is a straight replacement for my existing 2.2.3?

Ubuntu was working fine and everything. I get a notice that there were updates available so I tell Update Manager to update. It wanted a reboot after everything was successfully installed. So I press reboot and this is what I get from now on. How can I fix whatever the updates destroyed?

I upgraded yesterday ubuntu 9.10 to 2.6.31-19 kernel. After reboot, I get stack to GRUB black screen. No possibilities.
My set-up is triple boot 9.04, 9.10 and winxp. The MBR is handled by win boot.ini with no problems. Each ubuntu partition has a grub installed in it.
9.04 is on sda5 with grub installed on it ext3
9.10 is on sda9 with grub2 installed on it ext4
I am able to boot into sda9, via grub of sda5 obviously passing the correct kernel parameters and UUID.

I upgraded to 9.1 and now my web browsers are not working properly--FireFox would not connect to certain sites, others worked fine. I installed Chrome and it worked for a short period--now none of my browsers work at all and package install manager does not work. Overall performance is much slower than before upgrade--boot time is about 4 times slower. I'd like to fix this build because I had it tweaked just the way I liked it before the upgrade--it was working great and now I'm sorry I upgraded there any hope or should I just start with a fresh install of 9.1 or even the previous version

I just did the latest upgrade in 9.10 via the update manager and it required a reboot. When I rebooted Ubuntu failed to load. In recovery mode it fails saying that it can't find my root device and has some suggestions about what might be wrong. I looked at the file it listed in /proc/something and the devices available by uuid in /dev/ and what's listed in /proc/something isn't in dev. I haven't made any changes yet for fear of causing worse damage. The shell it bumps to is ASH and it doesn't look to have much editor support to make changes to the proc file(ECHO > ?). Is there a safer way to get my system back online?
I'm running 9.10 AMD64 on a Dell Inspiron laptop with a dual boot to Windows 7 (For browser testing web apps/sites)

Since my distribution upgrade to 10.04 my VirtualBox guest of XP SP3 will not boot, it bluescreens and reboots. I can boot the guest in last known good config and in safe mode but I have no CDROM. I attempted a tools install over the lan but that resulted in the same blue screen. Tried installing the virtualbox-3.2 beta package and guest tools and had the same results..

I had a working workstation with Karmic. Then I decided to upgrade to Lucid. Bad move, it turns out.First the upgrade crashed. Just stopped doing something for hours on end, and I eventually had to reboot. After that, I had to apply lots of apt-get and dpkg love to get the machine to book. Now, I *think* I have a Lucid system, at last. Only that it doesn't work where the Karmic system used to...Our setup uses kerberos and autofs. To begin with, the upgrade lost my /etc/krb5.keytab (making it impossible to log in), but that can be easily replaced. Now, I can log in, but my home directory doesn't get mounted. In /var/log/auth.log, I get this:
Code:
Jun 23 11:13:58 pc13477 gdm-session-worker[1801]: pam_krb5(gdm:auth): pam_sm_authenticate: entry (0x0)

I ran a system upgrade today and it froze at "unpacking replacement libpango1-common". It just wouldn't go on. The upgrade kept on showing "unpacking replacement ..", the process used zero CPU time, so I killed it, removed the lock and after Synaptic asked me to, I ran sudo dpkg --configure -a. Now I can't install anything. Everytime I try to, I get an error telling me I should run "sudo apt-get -f install", however, whenever I do that, another endless installation of libpango1.0-common starts. I tried various things like installing that package manually, removing it and so on, but nothing helped. Any advice on how to get my package installation system working again is warmly welcome.

Just updated my system to 11.04 and was not a fan of Unity. So I decided to switch to gnome 3. I downloaded all the packages and made the switch, only to realize I had made a HUGE mistake. While gnome 3 looks beautiful, it doesn't work at all for me. I have no internet (wired or wireless) now, and a host of other complaints. But when I try to restart Unity, the system fails. I also cannot start up Ubuntu in normal or Classic modes anymore.

I changed partitions (partition X is now partition X+1) and can no longer boot. I get thrown into grub rescue. But even if I get past that, it still doesn't boot. (I can't see why because it's using an unsupported graphics mode by default, but that's another gripe). I would prefer an installation which is not fragile to changes in partition numbers or drive numbers. It's not 1975 any more, can't we use meaningful names instead of 0, 1, 2?

I have been running 8.04LTS on a Sony Pentium III with Intel 810 chipset as a desktop system but with the servers installed so I could prototype web sites. The updates two days ago (Feb 23) have broken my theme display and screensaver. I can't get the background image to display like it used to do and none of the Applications Menu icons are showing. I have a second 8.04LTS system on a P4 Intel motherboard that got the same updates and is working fine, nothing broke that I can see.
I tried to use the 'Screens and Graphic' application to set the screen back to what I wanted but it wouldn't 'stick'. I finally hand edited xorg.conf so that it would boot up in a screen that I could use. Still, the 'X' close and min/max icons in the window corners still don't show. This makes it inconvenient to use though it still works as a web server. I dont' know where to look from here.

Upon upgrading from Karmic to Lucid, Everything comes up, seemingly fine. Once logged in to the OS, my three monitors show the desktop wallpaper as well as all the icons on the desktop. A few programs that I have set to autostart do so.
However for some reason, I can only access one of the three monitors. (And not the one with the gnome-panel.) As soon as I drag my mouse from my third monitor onto the one next to it, I loose complete control of it, and it starts dancing all over the place. If I try to drag a window from one screen to the next (using Alt-Left CLick + drag and not moving the mouse onto the other monitor), the the app goes from one side of the working monitor to the other side (like it's wrapping around). Though I can see it on the other monitor for a little bit until I get it far enough for it to wrap.
Here is my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Files"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled"

So far I've been dual-booting Vista and Intrepid, and I decided I'd shrink down the Linux partition a bit, expand the Windows partition and reinstall Ubuntu fresh from a Live CD. I booted up from a Live CD, mounted the old Linux filesystem to check that I hadn't missed any documents to back up before I wiped the partition, and then cued up the relevant operations in GParted.
The key mistake I made was not to unmount the old Linux partition first, which led GParted to bug out and, apparently, stop my Windows partition from working. GParted no longer recognises the partition as NTFS - it tells me it's an unknown filesystem, and refuses to move or resize it.
sudo fdisk -l recognises the partition as HPFS/NTFS. Running chkdsk from a Vista recovery disk has been, so far, unsuccessful. What else can I do to either make the partition bootable again, or at least access it from Linux so I can pull my files off?

I had the Adobe flash plugin working under 09.10 in Firefox; now after the upgrade to 10.04, it doesn't work. When I go to a web page with flash video, I get the message "Some plugins are not installed" and video will not display. I click on the button to install the plugins and select Adobe Flash. I get the message "Package is already installed." I go back to the web page and the same thing happens again. In Ubuntu Software Center I see that package restricted-extras is installed.
I tried going through Tools / Add-ons in Firefox, but the list of add-ons wouldn't load at all that way.I also tried going to Adobe's web site, but for versions of Ubuntu 09 and later it offers an "APT" file instead of a .deb. Firefox asks what application to use to open an "APT" file and I don't know what to tell it... I'd be fine downloading a .deb or using apt-get or Ubuntu Software Center though.

I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5
Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

i wanted to upgrade my ubuntu system to meerkat beta via update manager like i upgraded it the last 5+ times.
a bug showed up that i can recall from updating files previously: some software installtions via update manager triggered the programm nicotine+ (i think is was something like man-lib or man-db that, when called by the installtion programm, would trigger nicotine too). since i can close that nicotine+-window and the installation process isnt bothered any further i didnt mind.
now with this upgrade, i had to close nicotine+ around 5 times since it got triggered together with some of the files that got updated/installed in this upgrade.
and then what happened: GError something about an "unrecognized image file", it concerned a py file that was named "nicotine"...
so i waited for 10 mins and figured out that the update process had stopped. i couldnt resist and logged out, wanting to delete nicotine from my system and to reinitialize the upgrade. well, nothing works since then, grub only lets me choose different kernels which didnt help much as there was no way to startx.
my question is:
how can i reset this upgrade mess or bring this pending upgrade to an end? can i do an upgrade via network, based on the emergency shell that comes up in some kernel-recoverymodes? or should i burn a livecd, boot it and then do what? repair? try another upgrade? delete nicotine?
having 'consumed' ubuntu for years now i still wouldnt know what else to do then posting here.
