View 8 RepliesDoes anyone know if there exists a screen saver which simply displays the current time? That would allow me to quickly determine what time it is whether I'm sitting at my computer or sitting across the room

And can I change the current time on Linux?
I am using the Terminal. I would like to know how do I put the current date and time on my machine and the date from a certain URL that has .php extension into a file.
I select GLSlideshow in the KDE system settings, but there is no option to choose what folder I want to use. I have to open xscreensaver to do this. However, I don't want certain sub-folders being used and I can't seem to be able to blacklist those folders.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just updated to karmic. For some odd reason, the time/date indicator on the top panel now spreads the data over two lines, rather than placing them side by side. There doesn't seem to be any option in the preferences program to control this.
This means that the panel cannot be reduced below a two line minimum. Not only have I lost desktop space, but the panel icons have expanded to suit the new thicker panel.
Got an Asus eeepc 900a. Runs Intel 915 graphics. Upgraded to slackware current last week. X would not start. Based on info here, I reverted back to earlier libdrm and xf86-video-intel. That got it working again.
Updated Slackware current again today. I think I got a new kernel. Now, halfway through boot time, the screen goes blank, then comes back and the font is tiny. Gone into framebuffer mode. If I start X, it just freezes. Nothing but a reboot will get out of it.
I have vga=normal in lilo.conf, but I read that this is no longer used. I can find no way to turn off framebuffer mode. From other threads here, I have tried append="i915.modeset=1" in lilo.conf. Has no effect.
I could revert Slackware to 13.0 from current, and that would make the eeepc useful again. Is there anything else I should try?
I want to synchronize my time to a time server in Singapore. How can i do so with the Time and Date in System - Administration - Time and Date?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got fedora 11 set up to use network time protocol to sync my laptop's date & time when I'm on-line. The question is simple really, I've added a local universality's time server (what is public) and it's live. but it's added to the end of the default time servers what come with fedora. How do I get fedora to just use the local time server, is it a case of removing the default time servers for fedora, but there is a box what says advanced options which are. sync system clock before starting service ???? & use Local time source (( is that the same as the local ntp server that I've got set up ))Hope some body can help me with the network time protocol part of Date/Time settings.

I've been a Linux user for years but just recently I decided to take the plunge and use Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS (with Windows on the side for any games that don't run well in CrossOver Games).
Anyway, one thing I was curious about was whether or not I could get some of my Windows screen savers to work on Linux. Specifically I had been using "Blue Screen", a cute little ss made by SysInternals that emulates various versions of Windows BSODs.
The file comes as a .scr file (like all Windows screen savers). I wanted to know if there was any program that converted .scr files into Linux compatable screen savers. If not, that's still OK as I've now been rocking "Electric Sheep"!
I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on a HP DV9000 with an 1.7GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor, 2GB ram, and an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.
Under a Linux shell, how can I change the creation time of all a folder's files to the current time?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have some text based reports in which I would like to strip the "Current Date" from and replace with equivalent number of empty spaces, for every occurrence. For example, here is what I need to strip:
Date: 11/09/09
If I manually run the following SED command, it works great, however I cannot seem to find a way to use the actual "date" command within SED, to get the desired results.
WORKING: sed -i -e 's/Date: 11/09/09/ /' myfile
I've been messing around with various attempts to do this using the "date" command within SED, but I just can seem to get it right. I've also attempted defining variables which call separate "date" commands for day, month, year and inject them via standard variable calling, echoing variable, expanding variable with brackets, etc... Here are a few of the SED command attempts I've tried:
Quote:
sed -i -e 'sate: `date +%D`: :' myfile
sed -i -e "s/Date: `date +%d`/`date +%m`/`date +%y`/ /" myfile
sed -i -e 's/Date: `date +%d`/`date +%m`/`date +%y`/ /' myfile
sed -i -e 's/Date: $(date +%D) / /' myfile
I need to replace it with the equivalent number of spaces, as I'm going to be overlaying a PCL Logo here and need to keep the structure of the rest of the file. Cannot have the remaining portion of the line shifting left.
I am using Red hat Linux operating system.I want change the date exactly 5 years ago to current date with out providing month, date and time. I want only the year should be 5 years ago .please help in this regard . example . If current date is this = Wed mar 18 22:59:23 IST 2010. past date shuld be like this= Sat Mar 18 22:59:23 IST 2005

View 4 Replies View RelatedIt takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.
However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?
What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
i'm running 10.10 now, but had this problem since 9.04.whenever i watch a program on hulu or a lengthy videos video, my screensaver turns on even though i have it turned off. the only way i can fix this is by killing the screensaver process in system monitor.

However, on battery power the screen goes blank.I have read a number of threads on this topic and have made changes to power management settings (On Battery Power mirroring On Mains Power)and Compiz Settings|General|Unredirect Fullscreen Windows enabled, with no success. This also occurred when running 9.10. Not sure if it is a bug or incorrect settings.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been having a problem with every Ubuntu version I have used where the screen blanks automatically after a few minutes when the computer is left alone.I have set all the settings in the system BIOS and power management settings to disable screen saving features. The screen saver options are set to the following: Pictures Folder, Idle after 2 hours, Activate when Idle unchecked.Require password is checked.
These are my settings, but in about 10 minutes of not being touched, each computer goes to a blank screen and I have to use my password to get back to the desktop.I originally installed Ubuntu 8.04.3 on my desktop, and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on one of my laptop computers. I have sense upgraded the desktop to 9.10 and then to 10.04.I updated the first laptop to 10.04 and freshly installed 10.04 onto another laptop.I am having this same problem on all three computers and had the problem on each computer from the beginning.I ran update manager today about an hour ago and have not tested this problem, but I expect it is still there. I created a document with nothing but the time and left it on the laptop. I will see how long it takes for the screen blanker to activate.I searched the forum and found two unrelated problems, one of which was the opposite, someone who could not get the screen saver to activate.
I have to unlock the computer when the screen saver activates, How do I override the need to login. I just want to be able to move my mouse or hit a key on the keyboard to get out of the screen saver?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have no GNOME Panels on my desktop. I stopped gnome-panel from booting altogether by going into the configuration editoring to "/desktop/gnome/session/required_components" changing the panel key to "gnome-panel(Orig)" so that the command just errors out. Then adding a key in that same path the key is a string "avant-window-navigator". Since I've done this the screensaver doesn't come up. Also pidgin never goes idle. Both are set to hit at thirty minutes but have not hit in almost a day. I thought the mouse might be moving slowly or something butunplugged it and let it sit for almost an hour and nothing. Also at that time I had a VirtualBox with Windows XP in it and that screensaver hit no problem

on xubuntu there are settings for them you can also disable some for random screen saver
