Nov 18, 2010Is there a shell window where it can be split vertically and have 2 consoles going in one window side-by-side? I didn't see where I could configure the GNOME Terminal for it.

Jun 21, 2011I'm looking for a feature in Gnome Shell that would allow me to tile all of the open windows on a desktop. Something akin to Fluxbox's ArrangeWindows keyboard shortcut. I know you can tile two windows side by side, but I would need something capable of tiling ALL of them. Does something like this exist, or would I need to look into writing a Gnome Shell extension?

Mar 4, 2010I'm trying to do the following. from a php webpage click on a link, that opens a shell/cmd and runs an open ping to the device. so it must actually open a shell (for linux) or cmd (for windows) and run a ping to the specified ip. Currently i'm running an exec command, but for this i need to wait for the result to be fetched and print it out. I want to monitor it in realtime, by just clickingon the button. General :: Merge Pdf Files Vertically AND Horizontally?
Apr 13, 20111. Is there an easy way to combine pdf files not only one "after" the other, but also one "next to" the other? For example, If I have one-page files called a1.pdf, a2.pdf, a3.pdf, a4.pdf, b1.pdf, b2.pdf, b3.pdf, b4.pdf, c1.pdf, c2.pdf, c3.pdf, c4.pdf, I want to combined them so that I can scroll down from a to c and scroll right from 1 to 4. That is, I want to merge them in "matrix form". If I zoom out the final file should look like:

(TWELVE pages in total)
Is this possible? I tried Google but found no information.

General :: Screen Is Off Vertically By A Number Of Pixels?
Feb 16, 2010Having recently installed puppy linux (pup431) on my sony pcg-c1mah laptop with a monitor of 1280x600, I am absolutely in love with it. It is so fast and smooth. However, there is one problem, the screen position is shifted up vertically, off by a few pixels (30 maybe). This makes most of the application partially off the screen, which is really annoying. Previously, I was able to install xubuntu (8.04) on it without any problem. The screen was perfectly positioned. It was the speed reason I decided to go for puppy linux. If xubuntu was able to set the screen correctly, why puppy linux can not.

CentOS 5 Server :: FreeNX - Cannot Get Shell Prompt In GNOME Terminal Window
Jun 9, 2010I've created a brand new CentOS 5.4 (Final) 64bit machine AMI on Amazon EC2. This was based off an existing image. I was able to follow the wiki to add NX server. I am using WIN XP desktop for NX client.
I can connect to the EC2 machine and get the GNOME desktop fine. I see the usual CentOS desktop and poke around.
Q/Problem:
I expected to open the Terminal window and get a shell prompt to su into root user (I need to be root to install some software that needs GUI). I do not want to install this from my plain SSH connection to EC2 (hence the NX server etc.).
When I open the Terminal window, all I get is the NX>105 prompt. I need to get to a shell prompt so I can su into root. For life of me, I cannot get around this prompt (I looked at NX documentation too). Note that this is a prompt NOT on client but on the remote machine. I do not need this as I'm already authenticated and logged in to remote GNOME desktop.
Obviously the TERMINAL is running some NX start up script (I've no idea which one). If there is some other way to sudo into root?

Feb 8, 2011I should note that I tried the Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 Live CDs and have experienced this in version 10.10's Live CD. I guess that narrows the problem to GNOME? Basically, moving the cursor horizontally takes less effort than moving it vertically. It feels as though there are separate axes for sensitivity and I don't know how to configure them. how to make it be normal again? (In Lenny, it was perfectly fine.)

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 a909a. It was working fine until recently. Now when I go to print duplex, the second page is mirrored vertically and rotated wrong.
I suspect that a recent update to HPLIP has caused this, but there may be something else in play with the GS utilities also. The problem is that I have no idea about how to fix this. I was hoping an update would show up and a simple "yum -y update) would fix things. That still has not happened.
I am a student and would like to save paper, at least with my draft copies, but this makes duplex printing impossible.

Mar 24, 2011There are a lot of tutorials online for getting at individual features in AWN (or DockBarX), and I understand that not every feature I'm making use of here is necessarily going to be useful to every user - this is an interface tailored to my workflow. Still, if you're new to AWN, here's a quick tutorial on some of the features you'll want to know about to be able to take full advantage of it. The goal here is to configure AWN as an alternative shell to Unity that retains all the same basic features (and a few extra.)
In this tutorial, despite the default settings on everything else, I'm using the (very trendy, I know) Orta theme and Faenza icons. I don't think it's without reason that these are becoming Gnome's Aqua. They're very readable and clean, and they both include a lot of special features (like Orta's extensive appearance configuration options and Faenza's inclusion of special notification tray icons for common apps like Dropbox and Tomboy.)
Although I know there are perfectly good reasons for both options, I'm going to be assuming in this tutorial that you're using a theme with the window buttons on the left, as this is needed for the Unity-style workflow presented. If you don't know how to change this feature, I'll explain it when I mention gconf-editor below.
Ingredients:
We'll need to add two PPAs to your system - one for AWN and one for DockBarX.

We're most of the way to a functional-looking desktop, but there's still no Run Dialog when you press Alt+F2, because this is actually a dialog provided by Gnome Panel.Instead, we'll use the one provided by xfce-utils.From the Main Menu at the left, go to Preferences -> Compiz Config Settings Manager (ccsm), then click the Commands tile.
Enter "xfrun4" as Command 0, then click the keybindings tab. Enter whatever keystroke you like, although you might want to make it something other than Alt+F2 to avoid possible conflicts. You could use something like Synapse instead of xfrun4, although xfrun4 will allow you to run more complex commands. Either one will appear when you select Launch from the Main Menu.

What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?

But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Jan 16, 2011If you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a single Window.
2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.
What Doesn't Work:
Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:
If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)
2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.
3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.
For me, the window manager seems to bring some window from the background to the front! Desktop Recording of the Problem: [URL]

Ubuntu :: Window Borders Keep Disappearing - Open Compiz Icon To Reload Window Manager?
Apr 23, 2010I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
