Dec 22, 2010When I open Emacs the default is a split window. I can remove the splits with control-x-1. How to get it to open with a single window by default?

General :: Disallow Closing Last Emacs Window Via Window-Manager Close Button
Jul 8, 2011I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.
Debian Programming :: Emacs And ECB Missing Python Methods In Methods Window
May 12, 2014I work with python and I use emacs as my IDE tool. I have been running Debian Squeeze (6.0.9) for some time now with emacs 23.2.1 and ecb 2.32. I am able to access my python methods in the ecb-methods window with no problems. However I recently upgraded my desktop to Debian Wheezy (7.5) running emacs 23.4.1 and ecb 2.40 but I have lost access to the methods in the ecb-methods window. The window is just empty while the others (directories, sources and history) are all populated. I have a second laptop which I decided to upgrade to Debian Jessie, however Jessie recommends emacs 23.4.1 which is running with ecb 2.40 also. The result is the same as on Wheezy.
I have used the ecb menus and googled for a solution or even just a mention that such a problem exists but have come up with nothing. Either I have a unique situation here or am doing something really dumb.
I would like to upgrade to Wheezy or Jessie but I need access to methods in the ecb methods window. How to keep my upgrade and see the methods in the methods window of the ecb system ....
General :: How To Open Emacs In Its Own Window
Aug 20, 2010I am doing some project work and for that using the server at college with ssh connection. Every time I try to open emacs on the terminal after connecting, it opens emacs in the terminal itself i.e. not its own window. On my laptop on which ubuntu is installed, emacs always opens up in its own window an thats how I am used to it. There are several problems when it opens in the terminal like when I try to use commands such as M-V, actually terminal's view menu opens up, its very frustrating. Also I am pretty sure that the college server runs on red hat and has X installed on it. So what do I need to do to get my emacs window back.

Jul 4, 2010I'm using ubuntu 9.04. I use emacs for almost everything. I used emacs that I compiled from the source on my laptop. I liked the default font that came with it. So I never cared about the font. For some reasons I have to switch to another laptop where emacs is installed from the package. I donot want to go through compiling the source again. I would like to know what is name of the default font in emacs. I donot like the default font that comes with the ubuntu package.
The font I'm talking about is the font that is usually found in most emacs written documents. Similar to this webpage (web browsers might render this differently) . And also this webpage. describing font without knowing the name is difficult . The second link gives a better idea. (Hopefully :-))
Also I read about cse-huji-default-font but M-x describe-variable says it can not find the variable. (Is this related to my problem??)

Jul 19, 2010with 11.2 and now with 11.3 (using KDE4) i got two issues with emacs:
1) The emacs window doesn't properly snap to other windows. There is mostly a small gap inbetween.
2) When switching between buffers with C-x b the emacs window shrinks vertically from below!

Jul 15, 2015I just upgraded my system from wheezy to jessie. For the most part, the upgrade was painless, but there's one bit of weirdness that I can't seem to fix on my own.
In my .Xdefaults, I set the font for Emacs with this line:

When I do this, however. the font that appears in Emacs is not any misc-fixed font. See the following image for what Emacs displays. The window for xfontsel shows what font it should be selecting.
Note that both emacs23 and emacs24 (both Debian packages) exhibit this behavior. I also see it with an installation of emacs24 that I compiled myself.
If I use xlsfonts to see what's available matching this pattern, four choices are presented:

If I change the font-spec in Emacs to specify one of the avgWidth parameters (70 or 80), then Emacs displays the correct font. Note that with this spec, Emacs's choice matches what xfontsel displays.

Why Emacs is using the wrong font family when the avgWidth is set to "*". As I understand X font strings, using "*" should make it pick either 70 or 80, but it clearly isn't doing that. A "*" worked with wheezy, so I'm assuming the upgrade changed my font configuration, but I don't know what it might have changed.

Mar 25, 2011I have a pretty vanilla install of Ubuntu Lucid. I would like to change my default WM to sawfish. I have it installed, and it works routinely, I would just like to have it start automatically on log-in, rather than Lucid. A few sources have suggested that the way to do this is during log-in. They refer to a "session" I could choose, which would allow me to set the WM. I remember doing this in the past, but can't find such an option on the login page, now.
I have also experimented with changing .gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/ using both gconf-editor and emacs. However, when I change "/usr/bin/compiz" to "/usr/bin/sawfish", log out, and log back in, I find that compiz starts anyway, and the setting in that file has been restored to compiz. Clearly, the gconf mechanism is getting the information from some other source.
