Debian :: Setup Error - Libc6 Not Detected
Mar 9, 2016
I'm having another issue when trying to install a particular software package.
I'm trying to install a CityEngine 2015.2 trial and when I run the setup script using ./Setup, I get the following error:
Code: Select all[CityEngine 2015.2 Setup Error]
libc6 not detected
I tried reinstalling libc6 to no avail and searching the net for answers but couldn't find any solutions.
I parsed the script for that exception and found the following code:
Code: Select allelif [ "x` which dpkg-query 2>/dev/null `x" != "xx" ]
then
DetectedLibcVersion=` dpkg-query -s libc6 2>/dev/null | grep ^Provides: | cut -f2 -d'-' `
if [ "x${DetectedLibcVersion}" = "x" ]
then
error_header
echo "libc6 not detected" >&2
exit 1
fi

when I try to install cpp4.3 it says : cpp-4.3 depends on libc6 (>= 2.11); however version of libc6 on system is 2.7-18
when I try to install libc6 2.11.2-5_i386.deb it says : installing libc6 would break locales, and deconfigoration is not permitted

I run Etch. Yes, it's oldstable, but Lenny and Squeeze annoy the heck out of me. However, I'm trying to install the latest version (5.1) of Google Earth, but it requires >=glibc-2.4. Etch only offers 2.3.something. The earlier version of GE I have (4.3) does work, but is apparently no longer supported by Google as it fails to connect every time I fire it up. I found Lenny does have the required libc6 version. Can I update the libc6 packages by installing them directly (separately downloaded packages) or do I get the dependency hell that I want to avoid?

I am using my athlon64 machine running Debian squeeze i386 to build some packages optimized for a K6-2 machine. I decided to start with libc6 since most packages depend on it.
I installed the build dependencies via
Code:
apt-get build-dep eglibc
Then, as an unprivileged user, I downloaded the debianized source via
Code:
apt-get source eglibc
I changed to the source directory and ran
Code:
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -us
About 6 hours later, the build failed: [URL]
There were four config.log files:
Code:
./build-tree/i386-xen/config.log
./build-tree/i386-i686/config.log
./build-tree/i386-libc/config.log
./build-tree/i386-amd64/config.log
All of which end with exit status 0. They are also about 1600 lines each so I haven't read them entirely. If someone can tell me which one/ones is/are relevant, I will post it/them to a pastebin.

With tar, it is possible to back up your desktop system like so (probably best done from runlevel 1 or a live medium):
# cd / # or wherever your root directory is mounted
# tar --exclude=dev/* --exclude=proc/* --exclude=sys/* --exclude=tmp/* --exclude=backup.tar.gz -czvpf backup.tar.gz .

I migrated to Debian sid, but since then I got this error everytime I launch Update Manager (whether it's in graphical mode or from a shell). Just after putting down my root password, I got this error:
Title of the window: (as superuser) A fatal error has been detected in update-manager. Do you want to submit a bug report? Selecting No will close the application. Whether I click Yes or No, nothing happens.

I just tried installing another version of libc6 (2.10.2-6) with kpackage. It didn't work so I had a broken package on my system. I then wanted to fix it with synaptic package manager which then told me in order to remove it, I had to pretty much uninstall all of linux. I then tried installing the older version of libc6 (the one I'm supposed to have: 2.7-18lenny2). That gave me the error code
dpkg -i '///home/sam/torrents/libc6_2.7-18lenny2_i386.deb' ;echo RESULT=$?
dpkg: `ldconfig' not found on PATH.
dpkg: 1 expected program(s) not found on PATH.
NB: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin.
RESULT=2
I already checked my path and it was: /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin (I found it with echo $PATH)
I guess my path is okay so the problem is in ldconfig but how can I get ldconfig in the path and where could it be now?

I think I need to upgrade my libfaac libraries due to some problems I am having with ffmpeg (the libraries are in the package 'libfaac0'). However, it won't install it because my version of libc6 is really out of date, supposedly (but it is actually the most up-to-date version).Do I need to manually upgrade libc6 or is something else messed up? I don't want to do anything that would put me at risk of screwing up a lot of dependencies.

The message above occurred with GEdit running in background and while attempting to use yahoo mail in Iceweasel. System froze and I rebooted.
While Iceweasel has been the browser used the most since installing the system and has been the program in use during the freezes, Epiphany was also tested and was far less functional, with rendering failures occurring with nearly each modification of a page, though not all fatal. With Epiphany, re-rendering and reloading of a page was only accomplished by using my mouse wheel, other input methods left a gray, unusable screen.
My installation was complicated by the following factors and goals: dual-boot capability with the idea of loading another linux flavor such as Ubuntu onto a partition. retain 2 "legacy" ReiserFS data partitions used under Debian Etch. use 1 ReiserFS partition as /home
What suggestions do you all have on stopping these system freezes and errors?
Other possibly useful factors:
I chose "Expert" (graphical) install as it seemed the only way to enable dual-boot capability.
I loaded the ReiserFS compatibility modules during the system install.
I chose the "highlighted" kernel during the install out of 4 choices. The kernel I chose is Linux version 2.6.32-5-686 (Debian 2.6.32-31) (ben@decadent.org.uk) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP Tue Mar 8 21:36:00 UTC 2011 - however I cannot rule out the possibility that one of the other 3 kernels wouldn't have worked better.
I chose to enable the version of the system that had the most options for hardware compatibility instead of a more limited, smaller system customized to my hardware.
The default system settings for inactivity would log me off, as ppropriate. Because of a pattern of problems awakening from sleep mode, on 5/13 3am I changed the log off setting to never to avoid errors when the system should awaken. But still yet another freeze at on 5/13 at 22:49 while multiple windows were open.

I want to setup a FAI server for which I was looking for the best method of mirroring the Debian Lenny. I want to setup a local mirror with the best method available for mirroring. If it is ftpsync, please provide me some best ways of doing it. I tried ftpsync mirroring but that was not getting properly working due to insufficient I want this mirror to be accessible in my FAI setup so that I can start the installation on multiple machines and start the updates and package installation to be done from the same local mirror.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and previously had a separate partition with another distro on it. I decided to delete the other distro's home and swap partitions and install XP in place of it. I've been following these instructions: [URL] and [URL] I have gotten to the point where I am booting to the XP CD and want to install it, but I get the message, "Setup did not find any hard disks installed on your computer" when I should be getting to the screen that asks me to select a partition to install XP on. This is what my HDD looks like in GParted:
I want to install XP in the unallocated partition, but I have a feeling I screwed up somewhere along the way and probably don't fully understand the whole thing. Even if I try to format the unallocated partition to NTFS I can't make it a primary partition (I assume because it's within sda2). The very last thing I want to do is delete my Ubuntu partition and start from scratch, but if that's my last option let me know.

I think I have Bug #444372 which seems to be fixed and available. I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 l Linux 2.6.31-20generic #58-Ubuntu SPM Fri Mar 12 i686 GNU This was listed as fixed 2010-02-10 and Bug Watch Updater on 2010-03-02 Changed in linux:
status: Confirmed → Fix Released
I installed 9.10 by ISO DVD gotten from the Ubuntu website after 2010-03-02.I have installed all updates in the Update Manager today. The error output is still showing up in my syslog:
render error detected, EIR: 0x00000010
[drm:i915_handle_error] error EIR stuck: 0x00000010, masking
render error detected, EIR: 0x0000010
My system hangs frequently. The desktop looks normal and the mouse is alive but nothing on the desktop will respond. CTL ALT F2 does not respond. I'm not sure if this bug is related. My hardware is an emachine D2823 Celeron D 325 with 256MB. Not the best and I expect it to be slow but not hang forcing a plug pull.

I recently had a hard drive on a computer (not to be obvious), and I fried the computer. You may ask "well why did you do that?" well, simply because I had accidentally bumped and switched to 220 volts, rather than keeping it at 115 like a sane individual. Anyway, I got a new computer, swapped the hard drive. When I go to boot into ubuntu though, it gives me the following error:
Code:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.
(EE) No devices detected.
I also have XP on this hard drive, and it works almost better than it did on my old one, surprisingly. all i have to do now for it to be labeled as efficient, is to get some RAM. But anyway, what can I do about the error message? I tried booting into recovery, running dpkg from the list of options, and it did a couple of things.

I tried to install OpenSuse 11.3 on my brand new pc, which already had Windows 7 proffessional in it, and I went step by step through the installation without changing anything. It didn't work. I tried for a second time and this error message kept popping up: "Creating device modes with udev 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Detected broken BIOS with 262140/2644kb of video memory stolen. 2.0436224] [drm: i915_diver_load]*ERROR*Disabling GEM(try reducing stolen memory or updating the BIOS to fix)"
And then a lot of letters and numbers wich make no sense to me. Now the only way I can initiate OpenSuse is with the OSuse boot dvd and on failsafe mode.

Every time I try updating my system to the new Debian stable, I end up with a system that no longer recognizes my burner and even though autofs was not updated, it is restarted and all of a sudden there's no map for it. This usually takes nothing more than updating Amarok to "stable", because libc6 must be updated. I've tried updating different programs and this is the one factor that remained the same when the autofs no maps issue cropped up. I am considering trying again. But testing the system upgrade on another partition, so I can get it right before using it on my "real" system.
Last time I made an attempt, I was able to make my burner and floppy drives visible under "computer" by adding both to the fstab file, and was even able play DVDs, CDs and floppies but the K3B burner would not recognize the burner and said hal was used to detect, but HAL was not updated -- I'm absolutely sure of this. The other burner program (Gnome Baker) would at least recognize and even named my burner, but could not burn a disk. I did update HAL afterwards, hoping to help the situation, but it improved nothing and may have made things worse. When I rebooted the next day I had no disk access whatever.
As I mentioned in the title, I believe upgrading to libc6 led to the trouble. Don't understand why. When I upgraded from old oldstable to the new old stable last year nothing bad happened. Would skipping over new "stable" libc6 and going for the new unstable work? If I could just solve this one problem, I could easily upgrade Dreamlinux 3.5 from Debian 5.0 to 6.0.1. That's where it was when I upgraded most of the system, before recognizing there was a disk recognition and mounting problem.

I installed wrong version from this package (I didn't knew that libc6 was very important package) so now i get a lot of errors. I tracked the original version and downloaded it. I have it on my PC as .deb package but i can't install it because it's older version then the installed one. Normally, I would first remove the old package and then install new. But now I'm not sure because I don't know will my edubuntu work without the libc6 package. Version of my edbuntu is 7.04 installed on asus eee 900HA. I only have internet on my desktop PC.
