Ubuntu Servers :: When Attempting To Switch To A Static IP Address, The Vent Client Will Not Detect The Vent Server At All?

Nov 18, 2010

I've been attempting to figure this out for about 4 days straight, so far it has not been fruitful. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 server onto my former gaming system, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz, 2 cores with 2 GB ram. Overkill I'm sure, especially for a simple personal voip, htpc, storage server.

The problem is only noticeable when I have the vent server running, on the 10.04 server, and I attempt to connect to it through the LAN via the client on my windows computerEverything works fine and connects, LAN and from the outside, as long as the server is set to DHCP. However when attempting to switch to a static IP address, the vent client will not detect the vent server at all.Aside from an annoyance at having to stick with DHCP, I am still curious as to why the static settings will not function. Something so simple has turned into something quite difficult.

I can still connect to the Webmin interface and Putty into server with either DHCP or static IP enabled.I've performed the following troubleshooting steps so far:1) Followed the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverg...iguration.html2) Edited the /etc/network/interfaces file through the CLI with nano and through notepad on the windows computer3) Through Webmin I've assigned the static IP, although for some reason it does not include a gateway field.4) I've rebooted the server5) I've issued the CLI

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
Here is the file /etc/network/interfaces:

Fedora Installation :: Just Vent: YUM UPDATE Takes An Hour

Feb 15, 2010

Fresh 12 install. I did a yum install yum-fastestmirror and it took over 30 minutes to download its database, at a speed of 5-9 KB/s. Drove me nuts to wait 30 minutes to download a 60Kb program. Then after the install of fastest-mirror, I thought I was out of the woods, and launched a YUM UPDATE, and its still downloading fedora/filelists_db at 13KB/s. Estimated to take over 20 minutes. After that, it will be downloading the 500MB of stuff - hopefully at a better rate. Sigh!! No way to speed this up?

Ubuntu Servers :: Assign The Static IP Address Of Internet Connection

Jan 14, 2010

I was trying to assign the static IP address of my internet connection to my home server and managed to make a mess of it. I've configured the router to assign it the address every time but when I rebooted everything the server is cut off from the network completely (rather unfortunate with a headless server...). The only file I've edited on the server when trying to do this is /etc/network/interfaces, everything else network related is default. My intention in editing the file was to make the server accept the IP address assigned by the router since the router was already configured to assign the right one. I put in

Code: inet dhcp in the /etc/network/interfaces file, is that wrong? What is that line supposed to be?

Networking :: DHCP Server - Losing Static IP Address

Nov 10, 2010

I have an Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 that I have given a static IP address. Every six hours or so I will lose connectivity to it and when I type ifconfig to look at the network information, it has been given an address via dhcp. If I run the /etc/init.d/networking restart command the IP address goes back to my static address and things are fine for another 6 hours or so. Here is what is in my interfaces file:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.60.82.15
netmask 255.255.0.0
broadcast 10.60.255.255
gateway 10.60.254.254

This machine is also a DHCP server and I checked to make sure there are no other DHCP servers on my network. Right now my fix is to have a Cron job running that runs the reset command every 5 hours, but I would like to find a more permanent solution.

Ubuntu Networking :: Set A Static IP Address On A Server (to Be Used With Mythtv) And Is Running Mythbuntu 10.04

Aug 12, 2010

Am attempting to set a static IP address on a server (to be used with Mythtv) and is running mythbuntu 10.04 (apologies if this is the wrong place to post this). I can set a static IP address that is in the range of 192.168.1.x on other machines on the network but when I try with the server it is not able to connect to the network. When using the DHCP rather than manually assigning the address it is assigned an address with the 10.0.0.x range. Why is it doing this I have never have this problem on other ubuntu boxes (and this one prior to a format of the OS).

The router/gateway is 192.168.1.1 I did have a DHCP server on the mythbox before formatting it and I was able to assign a static 192.168 address and retain internet connectivity. But I have re-enabled the DHCP server on my router since formatting the box.

Programming :: How Could Server Detect Closed Client Socket Using TCP And C++

Aug 6, 2010

Reading some examples on net and copying some codes I was able to build a (frankstein) server that accept connection from one client and receive and send messages to it. The big problem that shows up is that I don't know when client disconnects from my server.

I've been looking for a solution, but no success. I'd read about SO_KEEPALIVE option (which could solve my problem), but I don't know how to use it (how to check the value of it).

I can't use ping because the server (machine) could be running, but not the client (software).

Anyone knows a good tutorial or how to (for beginners like me xD) of TcpIp sockets using c/c++ and how to detect when a client disconnect?

I don't know sockets very well.

Ubuntu Networking :: Static IP Address And The Install Configures For A DHCP Configured Address - Network Not Starting

Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.

So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.

Programming :: Detect A Closed Tcp Client Connection When Client Is Only Receiving Data ?

Mar 9, 2011

I am writing a TCP server in C, and the server listens to incoming client connections and accepts them. It then creates a thread to handle the client. The clients are expected to only receive data from my server and not send any data. So if I use a select() call with a recv(), I believe that the recv() will just block forever since there will not be any data coming from the client. If I use a non-blocking recv(), then this will just return a 0 which tells me nothing because the client is not expected to send any data. I am not sure if I have misunderstood some socket concepts, but I need a solution to detect when the client has disconnected so that I can close the socket and stop sending data to the client. As I understand it, simple ACKs etc are not captured by the recv(), and only data sent by the client will cause recv() to return a non-zero value, so I am not sure how to know when the client has disconnected.

OpenSUSE Network :: Dhcp Client Does Not Receive The Dns Server Address

May 18, 2010

I have installed a working DNS server on my home network. I have an unique server, devoted to dns, gateway, storage which runs opensuse 11.0 (I known that it is rather old). Two new clients require DHCP. I have installed, using yast, a very simple DHCP server, according to the following config:

option domain-name "XXX.XXX";
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option routers 192.168.0.1;

[code]...

(I have tried to add "ddns-update-style none", and to remove the ntp-servers option, since my server is not a time server, without success). Unfortunately, even if the client (a mac running OSX 10.4) receives a right IP and gateway address, it displays neither dns server address nor default domain name. The same mac, on my office network (not managed by me), receives everything.

Ubuntu Networking :: Attempting To Share Internet Connection With Windows XP Client

Jan 25, 2010

Over the last several days, I've been trying like hell to share my (wired) Internet connection with a netbook, running Windows XP, attached via crossover cable to my desktop's extra NIC (eth0). The eth0 link is established, but I can't get to the Internet from the Windows XP machine.I can ping one machine from the other, but any bits sent from the Win XP netbook mysteriously disappear when trying to reach any website.

There is no firewall running on the Ubuntu machine as far as I know. Windows Firewall is likewise disabled on the Windows XP machine. The Ubuntu machine connects to the Internet through another wired NIC, eth1.In Windows XP parlance, what I am trying to do would be called "bridging," where eth0 and eth1 would be the two parts of the bridge. In fact I already made it work, with both the netbook and my desktop running Windows XP. It took about 5 minutes.I can't believe what a huge pain this has been in Ubuntu. I'm pretty much ready to give up. There seems to be no way to get an Ubuntu system and a Windows XP system to share an Internet connection.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cups Client-error-not-possible When Attempting To Print Or Add Printer

Jun 17, 2010

I noticed that a bit after I had updated Ubuntu 10.04 through the Update Manager, I couldn't print at all! (I run ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop and have a networked HP Officejet 6110xi all-in-one printer connected to a comp running Windows XP home on the same LAN). Everything works when I boot up in windows vista, so the problem is definitely in Ubuntu.

First, I checked the printer jobs and it said that there was an error with a filter or something. Restarting the job didn't do squat, so I decided to try reinstalling my printer, but get the same CUPS error "error-client-not-possible" right after I click "Apply". I then Googled the issue but didn't find much of anything, so I thought I'd try reinstalling CUPS. No luck there either... Same error again and again.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Server Switching To Static IP?

Sep 27, 2010

(Cross posting this from[URL]I am running an Ubuntu 10.04 server installation and I recently had to switch it from DHCP to static ip. I edited /etc/network/interfaces file and switched

"iface eth0 inet dhcp"
to
"iface eth0 inet static

[code]....

You'll notice the IPs are a little strange. This is because the sever is now on a special subnet dedicated to isolating specific servers. I also edited the resolv.conf file to include the proper DNS servers (including one of Google's just in case all hell broke lose). The problem is that, seemingly randomly, the machine will lose the ability to talk to the outside world. I know the machine is still up, but it acts like it has no networking at all.

I think part of the issue is that there is no DHCP running to this subnet (nor will there be) and the dhclient seems to still be running on occasion which causes some sort of conflict (no idea what) which causes networking to die. I cannot, however, remove the dhcp3-client package as it also causes the ubuntu-minimal package to be removed and that would be bad.

Server :: Send Traffic Down WAN Link Depending On Client IP Address Range?

Apr 15, 2011

I am running Debian Squeeze with the following basic services running:DNS
DHCP
Samba
Squid

The server is setup with three NICs: eth0 (WAN1), eth1 (WAN2), and eth2 (LAN).The server addresses clients with an IP range of 10.0.30.1 - 10.0.30.254. Some clients will be set with reservations so they fall into the 10.0.40.1 - 254 range.

What I want to do is have any outgoing external traffic coming from the first range (10.0.30.0) to use WAN link 1, and any outgoing external traffic coming from the second range (10.0.40.0) to use WAN link 2.

I have sort of got something working. I have created a bare minimum transparent squid3 setup on port 3128, and set the iptables as follows:

Code:
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth2 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.0.1:3128
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 3128
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth1 -p tcp -m tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 3128

I can get internet access, however obviously it only goes through one WAN link. It also seems slower than it should be. I experimented with tcp_outgoing_address, but seemed to not be my friend.

Server :: OpenVPN Range Address / When Change Static IP To Dynamic IP In Config File OpenVPN Didn't Work?

Feb 13, 2010

I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.

So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.

Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.

Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.

I hope I explained my problem as well.

My configuration file:

# OpenVPN Server Configuration File
dev tun 0
ifconfig 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2
cd /etc/openvpn
secret key_file

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter. Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.

Ubuntu Servers :: Cardreader Don't Detect SD Card (server X64)?

Nov 9, 2010

I own a ubuntu-server (2.6.35-22-server x64) - a home router / NAS / etc assembled at the mini-itx motherboard with no attached keyboard / display. The problem is that the system does not detect the occurrence of SD-card in a USB-card reader. Card reader is normally detected and visible in the system. When I insert SD-card in cardreader, in "dmesg" and, accordingly, "udevadm monitor" does not display any events. If reboot with connected SD, everything works fine, but, of course, there is no event when removing SD.On the forum topics if problems arise, it is only with automounting. But it's not. I do not have events from kernel, that he discovered the SD-card.In the desktop version there is no problem.I installed the generic kernel; comparing kernels configurations for desktop/server versions, comparing the output "udevadm monitor" at the time when I inserted the SD-card on desktop/server, etc. - useless.I don't have more ideas. I don't understand something. Probably there is no package.Almost ready to give up, put the desktop version and delete unnecessary. On desktop versions missing events displayed as follows (the output "udevadm monitor" when inserting SD-card):
