General :: Point Domain To Server With A Static IP Address?
Sep 4, 2010
I am trying to point my domain to my server with a static IP address. My domain is registered with Network Solutions and they ask "Primary and Secondary DNS" settings in their setup. What primary and secondary DNS settings I need to give when I have a dedicated server with static single IP address with BIND installed.

I got this message on Friday from just one domain. uote:mailsrv.forthnet.gr #<mailsrv.forthnet.gr #5.5.0 smtp; 554 5.5.0 Your message was considered to be spam by the FORTHnet Antispamming Policy and was not delivered to the recipient. The following spam tests returned positive for this message:FORGED_RCVD_HELO,RCVD_IN_BRBL. For further information visitWe are not a spamming community but it seems we have a statice IP address that has a Reverse lookup to "myipaddress.static.lyse.net" and not my email domain. Would setting a cname mail.mydomain.no -> myipaddress.static.lyse.net cure this problem or are there more tricks to be performedOnce I have cured the FORGED_RCVD_HELO I can move to getting the IP removed from BARACUDA.

I was thinking about setting up my own mail server. Problem is my ISP will not let me have a static IP unless I upgrade to a Business class service which is just too expensive for home use. As a work around I use a DDNS service from Dlink, which is actually done via DYNDNS.com. So essentially I have mydomain.dlinkddns.com point to my Dynamic WAN IP, and it is all automatically managed by my router.
Is there a way I can haveoint to my mail server without it being a subdomain of my DDNS om)? In other words I would like to have the email someone@mymaildomain.com and not have it be dlinkddns.com or something like that. I know someone has done it, I just have never done it. Not quite sure what to google to find the answer myself either.

I have a staic ip from my ISP provider and i have a web server too. I NAT the port 80 from my modem to the webserver and I can access my webserver from internet using typing my static ip. If my static ip is 122.67.xx.xx, then I need to type http://122.67.xx.xx. and i have a domain name mydomain.com pointed to this 122.67.xx.xx ip in my C-panel. I can ping mydomain.com from internet but if I type http://mydomain.com I am getting the following error from my browser Unable to determine IP address from host name for mydomain.com and The dnsserver returned: Name Error: The domain name does not exist.

I am thinking of getting a domain name or ten I do not know were to point the domain to?
and what do I need to setup if a user wants a domain name to point to his account on the server? ok more like I want to have a few domains pointing to my user accounts I have setup on the server..can I do this directly or do I need a server domain first before users can get a domain name?
I have a basic setup user web space and ftp and mysql setup
what extra would I have to install or not to be able to get a domain pointed to my server and/or user accounts?
I don't seem to be able to find anything specific on how to set this up anywhere.

1. I have registered Domain name/website, suppose = test.com, hosted on another ISP.
2. I have another Static IP, suppose = 1.2.3.4
3. Now I want to setup/configure mail server to send and receive Emails for "test.com", say a user from anywhere can use mail server by using webaddress of "mail.test.com"
4. Mail server will be mange locally in my own setup, accessible from everywhere.
5. Please give some examples, howto use registered domain name (for example = test.com) with static public ip (suppose= 1.2.3.4), so user can use only mail.test.com, not static ip address.

got a VPS and for testing purposes a homeserver with apache running. what two tools would i need to redirect my static ip to my dynamic one?
the traffic shall all go through the dynamic one. i've got a domain name registered with the VPS also. nameservers are configured.
is there any setup required on my local (dynamic ip) apache settings for using the name? and if i stop the service, will it still work? do i have to setup a webserver on the VPS for it? none running yet.

I have an Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 that I have given a static IP address. Every six hours or so I will lose connectivity to it and when I type ifconfig to look at the network information, it has been given an address via dhcp. If I run the /etc/init.d/networking restart command the IP address goes back to my static address and things are fine for another 6 hours or so. Here is what is in my interfaces file:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.60.82.15
netmask 255.255.0.0
broadcast 10.60.255.255
gateway 10.60.254.254
This machine is also a DHCP server and I checked to make sure there are no other DHCP servers on my network. Right now my fix is to have a Cron job running that runs the reset command every 5 hours, but I would like to find a more permanent solution.

So I'm looking to host potentialy three different...sites...I want to call them from the same machine. One is a radio station and the other 2 are just straight websites. So I wanted to know if I had to use different machines to accomplish this or can I alter maybe the http conf file or what. I did find this in the forums but wasn't quite sure if this applied to me. Am attempting to set a static IP address on a server (to be used with Mythtv) and is running mythbuntu 10.04 (apologies if this is the wrong place to post this). I can set a static IP address that is in the range of 192.168.1.x on other machines on the network but when I try with the server it is not able to connect to the network. When using the DHCP rather than manually assigning the address it is assigned an address with the 10.0.0.x range. Why is it doing this I have never have this problem on other ubuntu boxes (and this one prior to a format of the OS).
The router/gateway is 192.168.1.1 I did have a DHCP server on the mythbox before formatting it and I was able to assign a static 192.168 address and retain internet connectivity. But I have re-enabled the DHCP server on my router since formatting the box.

Location and syntax of named.conf in Ubuntu's version of BIND 9. I already have an HTTP server (in the form of Apache) along with forum software set up on my Acer netbook. However, the only way I can access the forum software is if I type in my IP address. How do I set up my named.conf to get the IP address to redirect to a domain? I already have my resolv.conf configured to allocate a domain to the IP address, but testing the ping of the site returns a "No such domain" error.

I have 4 servers that I got at auction and they now have ubuntu running with gnome interface.I installed apache2 and tried to edit the conf file but i am not sure if it is a router issue a dns or the config.I am trying to figure out how to set the server to hold the domain from a dynamic ip address and also how to create some test page to see if i can acess from the internet.
I have purchased some books on the command lines and how ubuntu works, I am understanding it so far, but dont know how to have a directory for the dns request to point to for the sitewhat i want to do with the servers...voipeb server for about 4 websites - one is for a volunteer rescue organization, another for a test auction site and 2 portfolio sitesremote file access- if possiblealso on a side note, is it possible to have a message relay from one cell phone or transmit to the server and have it send sms message to cell phones? - this will be used for the rescue group as well.

Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.
So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.
My files are as follows:

I imagine that there is already a thread for setting up a static IP, but I haven't been able to find it yet, so here we go.I have recently installed Fedora 15 on home machine. I have a very simple home network. Belkin wireless router with Window and Linux systems. The router is setup to be DHCP server. Router is setup to have lease time = Forever. Even with this setup, my router is assigning different IP address for my linux machine every time I boot the machine. So I would like to setup a static IP on my Linux. From my research so far, I'm suppose to make some changes to the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. But I don't have this file in this folder. Should I just create this fil

Ubuntu was a good choice for free server O/S. I am currently downloading it. My ISP wants to bind my static IP to a MAC address of the device that will be making my connection for me. Should my server be behind my router or in front of it? I kinda wanted it to be the access point and be able to monitor the usage from all the terminals in my house. where are the interface configurations (set by ifconfig, not the static ones) stored? I'm asking because I'm trying to understand, more broadly, the order of IP address lookup. If I ping the local machine (localhost, or one of the interfaces) no messages get sent out (at least according to wireshark), so some local lookup must be taking place.

I want to host 5 websites on my new virtual server so I have created 2 nameservers that point to my virtual server's IP addresses as a glue record. What confuses me is when I create a new domain on my server it gives the new domain it's own nameservers (ns1.thenewdomain.co.uk etc) do I need to change these records so they use the nameservers I created earlier? If I do? Which particular records should I change? I'm running a Unix virtual server with a Plesk control panel.

Since my dvd-writer passed away, I disconnected it from the pc and I reconnected temporarily, an older one that I have (an IDE one).My problem is, that I don't any longer have a static mount point (/dev/cdrom, or something similar), but I have a dynamic one instead (eg. for the dvd labeled "My_data", I have /media/My_data).I really dislike dynamic mount points, since I can't work from konsole (eg. eject doesn't work any more), or with cd archivers (like cdcat).
The only thing I changed is the related BIOS settings (enabling IDE controller and setting the dvdwriter to primary master). The related fstab entry didn't changed of course. (Actually, fstab didn't changed at all)./dev/scd0/media/cdrom0udf,iso9660user,noauto00

I am struggling with what might be a minor problem. I have a home computer which I would like to setup as a webserver and hence give it a static IP address. It is connected to by wire to a router that is connected to the WAN via PPPOE. If I enable the network card on DHCP it works fine in browsing the web. If I now set it to static IP address it does not brown. Essentially I use the command setup to run the static IP setup. I then set my IP address to 192.168.254.X , the subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to 192.168.254.1 (this is the router connected to the WAN). I am able to ping the router, however when I try and browse on static it does not work. Your help will be most appreciated as this has taken way too long to solve and I have Googled as much without success.
