Ubuntu :: Static Binary For Firefox 3.6 Won't Detect/use Flash?
Jan 23, 2010
I'm running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, I just downloaded Firefox 3.6 (the static tarball package, not the source code) and it runs smoother than 3.5, but it has one small issue: it won't use my flash plugin!I don't want to install via APT (the Mozilla Daily Builds PPA breaks my Firefox installation) but I DO want to use Firefox 3.6, so how do I make the static binary version of Firefox 3.6 use flash?

I'm trying to use the software tool here, using the AMD64 static binary for no other reason than I am trying to install and use it on a 64 bit instance of MythBuntu.
[URL]
I figured I follow the instructions here
[URL]
But the 64bit version doesn't have a configure file. The only file in there is a .exe, that doesn't do anything when you double click it in a Linux file explorer, and I didn't know you even use .exes on Linux.
After lots of googling (very little information out there that isn't specific to a software package) it looks like maybe you skip the `configure` and `make`, and go straight to `make install`? Can I do checkinstall instead as recommended on the Ubuntu wiki? Or have I got this totally wrong? Is this unnecessary, and I should just use the regular source files on my 64 bit Mythbuntu install?

Firefox's Brazilian Portuguese Language Pack has not yet been ported to Firefox 4 so I got Mozilla's Firefox binary in my language, used Pat's Slackbuild for 13.1 and replaced Slack's Firefox with it. I tried compiling it localized from source using the Slackbuild in /source, but all I found to add to the configure options was a "--with-l10n-base=directory" option, which I made point to the pt-BR locale I'd downloaded from Mozilla, but it still compiled in en-US.
My question is: am I missing out on something like the cairo-tee option? If I am, has anyone had success in building a localized version of Firefox around here? How?

I've been attempting to figure this out for about 4 days straight, so far it has not been fruitful. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 server onto my former gaming system, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz, 2 cores with 2 GB ram. Overkill I'm sure, especially for a simple personal voip, htpc, storage server.
The problem is only noticeable when I have the vent server running, on the 10.04 server, and I attempt to connect to it through the LAN via the client on my windows computerEverything works fine and connects, LAN and from the outside, as long as the server is set to DHCP. However when attempting to switch to a static IP address, the vent client will not detect the vent server at all.Aside from an annoyance at having to stick with DHCP, I am still curious as to why the static settings will not function. Something so simple has turned into something quite difficult.
I can still connect to the Webmin interface and Putty into server with either DHCP or static IP enabled.I've performed the following troubleshooting steps so far:1) Followed the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverg...iguration.html2) Edited the /etc/network/interfaces file through the CLI with nano and through notepad on the windows computer3) Through Webmin I've assigned the static IP, although for some reason it does not include a gateway field.4) I've rebooted the server5) I've issued the CLI
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
Here is the file /etc/network/interfaces:
[code]....

How do I access a flash drive? I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I would think plugging it in would auto detect but that does not happen. I have tried several different flash drives. I stick them into a USB slot and nothing. I went into Places.Computer and Places.Home Folder. It's not showing there either. I tried several different USB ports. It appears Ubuntu can't detect USB flash drives.

The other day, I installed Debian 6 XFCE on my old pc. It was using a lot of my poor little amd k6-2's ability. I couldnt run any programs without it lagging. So today I reinstalled debian 6, this time with the LXDE desktop. The processor situation is fixed and my ancient HP is quick with its old cpu.
Although I love LXDE, there is a problem, when I plug in my flash drive it wont recognize its there. (The XFCE desktop did) I have tried rebooting and all 2 of the usb slots, lol (1.1), and it wont recognize them.
I have tried formatting them in FAT and FAT32, is there a certain format that it needs? Is this a common problem?
Oh, and my mouse is USB and it works just fine.

Ive installed fc11 on my laptop (IBM lenovo R400). My work has a proxy which we must go through. I have set the proxy addresses in System Settings->Network Settings-> proxy. I have also run export [URL].. All seems to be ok, yum works from the command line, konquer goes out to the net just fine. However firefox wont connect to the internet no matter. The only way at the moment is to manually set the proxy in firefox. This doesnt seem right? Surely FF should pick up the system proxy? Does anyone have any ideas about this one?

I made an error by downloading and installing a new version of firefox. I do not manage any more to install the flash! I would also play World of warcraft but I have a little problem. I know it is not precise. But my english teacher would we make a discussion of anything in English, for 30 minutes. Thus it would be cool if anybody can contact me on <snip.> We could discuss about these problems with skype.

Another post regarding the Firefox/Flash issue on Ubuntu 10.04 ... My main question is that I don't understand why Flash in Firefox (Huffington Post videos of The Daily Show) works differently on two computers that are identically configured (but cf. below):
- both have Firefox 3.6.3;
- within Firefox aboutlugins, all plugins with "flash" are the same;
- within Synaptic, all things that have "mozilla", "flash", "adobe" are identically installed on both (that includes Adobe Flash plugin Version 10.1.53.64ubuntu0.10.04.1)
The only difference is that the computer where it works is a 64bit system, the one where it doesn't work is a 32bit system. Can this be true, that this is the thing that makes this huge difference? Any fixes around for that (other than FlashAID)?

I just switched back to Ubuntu a few days ago for the first time in about a year or so. Running 8.04 (Hardy), because it was the disk I had around. Don't want to bother upgrading to the newest version just yet, as I have a good deal of homework I want to get done.
Anyways, I seem to have encountered an issue of not being able to run Flash in Firefox. For example, when I go to a ..... video, it tells me i need to install the plugin. So i've gone to the Flash website, downloaded the appropriate .deb file, and installed that. No change.
So I go back to a page that uses Flash, and click on the "Install Missing Plugins" button that appears. The popup says "Press next to install these plugins", but lists no plugins, and nothing gets installed.

So I've installed the flashplugin-nonfree package but for some reason flash refuses to work under Firefox. The libflashplayer.so is in the right folder and flash actually works under Chromium browser - just not Firefox.
I setup the system from a 10.04 32bit minimal CD could it just be a pakage I am missing that is causing flash not to work under Firefox? I've tried Firefox 3.6.x and 4.0 beta and flash fails in both.

I'm confused with Adobe Flash. I'm using 32-bit Ubuntu 10.10. Flash was working for me in Google Chrome 8.0.552.224 but not with Firefox 3.6.13. So, I tried to troubleshoot it myself. I searched for how to uninstall Flash and I found a link to a thread from 2008, [URL]. I quickly ran the code posted. And, of course, only after running the code did I bother to read the date the post was posted which was 2008. I did:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove -y --purge flashplugin-nonfree gnash gnash-common mozilla-plugin-gnash swfdec-mozilla libflashsupport
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f ~/.mozilla/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/*flash*
Then I ran
Code:
sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin
Then Shockwave Flash 10.1 r102 was working for ..... in Firefox. And was still working in Google Chrome. Is there a site that has explicit steps for removing Flash from 10.10? And I had thought that the file named "libflashplayer.so" always had to be located in Firefox's directory named, /home/user/.mozilla/plugins/ for it to work in Firefox. But, now the only place that file exists is:
Code:
# find / -name "libflashplayer.so"
/usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/libflashplayer.so
So, I guess I was wrong with thinking that the file named "libflashplayer.so" always had to be located in Firefox's directory named, "/home/user/.mozilla/plugins/". I have no idea where it's suppose to go for Google Chrome 8.0.552.224. How does Chrome find it? So, in the end, Flash is working for me in both browsers and I have no idea why.
