Ubuntu :: Stop X11 Starting Up In Karmic?
Mar 23, 2010
I have a Ubuntu desktop install I would like to stop X11 from starting up on bootup. I want to do this to try to set up stand alone xbmc and Mythtv without X running since it is a low spec machine. (appleTV)
Is it just a rc file I need to edit ?

Desktop running a clean install of Karmic with ext4, /home on a separate ext3 partition. If I attempt to use Nautilus to copy a file over 1GB (that seems to be the tipping point) from Desktop to another partition or an external HDD, or if I download anything at the same time as I'm copying any file, the system freezes completely (no mouse, keyboard lights flash and keypresses don't register), and the only thing I can do is hit the reset button. I don't know enough to figure out exactly what's causing it, but I think it's ext4; this very same hardware ran Jaunty with ext3 like a champ, but when I installed Karmic, I formatted that partition to ext4, and that's when the freezing started. In the event that I don't know what I'm talking about and it's actually video drivers, I am using the Nvidia driver (185) on a GeForce 6200 because I use TwinView and don't know how to do a spanned desktop without it. I had used Nvidia drivers in Intrepid and Jaunty, though, with no problems. I have no Compiz effects enabled at all.
I'm perfectly willing to go back to ext3 (I think I remember how to make the list to "auto-install" applications, and /home is separate anyway), but if it is ext4 causing the problem, I'm still likely to run into it because one of my external HDDs is formatted ext4, and I don't really have anywhere to stick nearly 1TB of photos and video to reformat it ext3. Ultimately, if that's what it takes to fix the freezing, I'll do it, but I'd rather not. I like Ubuntu...I've used it since Warty, but this is wearing me out. I will carefully follow instructions and do nearly anything; I just want the freezing to stop.

What is the proper way to stop tftpd from starting up? There is no numbered rc script symlink for it so I can't use update-rc.d. I don't want to just hack a file unless that is considered "the way".

A server like Lighttpd or Apache starts automatically at boot after you install it. How do I stop it from auto starting? I'd prefer to manually start it when I need it.

I would like to stop network manager from starting up on boot. I have tried moving
Code:
/etc/init.d/network-manager stop
to rc.local and it did nothing but boot me into the CLI
I have also tried to put
Code:
sudo service network-manager stop and that did nothing also.
After I get network manager to stop on boot up. How do I make it so it will not auto connect to networks? My computer keeps on joining a different network on boot up. And I don't like this as some times I go to my banks website and I am on there network with out realizing it (because of the auto connect) Is there a way to stop this also?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. I recently installed the open ssh server so that can sftp stuff. However, I do not want the server to always be on, only when I manually start So, I did an 'update-rc.d -f ssh remove'and now I don't see any startup scripts in the rcx.d directories any more. However, when I do a 'ps ax', there is always a '/usr/sbin/sshd' process running. I try to kill it but it keeps restarting under a different process ID.How do I disable sshd?

I had been happily on Jaunty Jackalope until they stopped supporting it so I took the forced upgrade and it's HORRIBLE!
I feel like I'm back in Windows land. Within an hour of my first load I had my very first Ubuntu total-lockup. Just like Windows. In the 18 months I'd been using Jackalope I had not had a single crash. Not one.
It's slow, jerky, and has odd freezes. Just like Windows. Applications randomly stop working and die. Just like Windows.
Is there any way to fall back to Jackalope or is there any hope of them fixing Koala? 'Cause this is wretched.
I see there's another version out there...10.04.01.LTS. I'll try that. It can't be much worse.

I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).
[Code]....
I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.

I am trying to setup LDAP server on Ubuntu 10.04 and am sticking to the old /etc/ldap/slapd.conf file configuration.
I had to comment ldapi:/// from /etc/default/slapd since it was giving 'Address already in use error'. Also had to juggle with pid directory and file issues
After that I was able to start the slapd daemon (service slapd start) but now I am running into multiple issues:
1. Can't stop the service with service slapd stop
Code:
## Service stop returns 0, maybe because start-stop-daemon is not giving error
#service slapd stop
Stopping OpenLDAP: slapd.
# echo $?
0
Will switching to BDB database resolve this ?Also can't I slapcat at non-root user ??

I am trying to give access to ONE single user to start and shutdown tomcat server. The problem being, when I enter syntax: username ALL= /etc/init.d/tomcat5, /usr/local/tomcat/webapps, PASSWD:ALL This gives the user access to start and stop tomcat but also gives user access to start and stop other services within /etc/init.d - such as httpd etc... What is the proper way to give user access to start and stop service, and limiting that power to only one service....

I have installed ubuntu on numerous computers, but for some reason I am getting this problem on this computer. When I try to log in GDM flickers then goes back to the user selection screen. After like 10 attempts i can log in. It doesn't always do this either. Hopefully these log errors will help solve this problem.

Has anyone gotten Kshowmail to work with karmic 9.10? I had it working back with 8.04 after a lot of effort and a great deal of help from another source (which involved installing kmail and kdesk also to fix dependencies), but I cannot seem to come up with any scheme that will work with 9.10. It "seems" to work if I get the .deb package from sourceforge, but when I open it and put an identity in it, it fails to work and gives me a message about not being able to recognize "pop", or something like that, despite the fact that thunderbird is certainly using pop for downloading . . .
