Ubuntu :: Cannot Kill Sshd Process And Stop Ssh Server From Automaticall Starting?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10. I recently installed the open ssh server so that can sftp stuff. However, I do not want the server to always be on, only when I manually start So, I did an 'update-rc.d -f ssh remove'and now I don't see any startup scripts in the rcx.d directories any more.However, when I do a 'ps ax', there is always a '/usr/sbin/sshd' process running. I try to kill it but it keeps restarting under a different process ID.How do I disable sshd?

We have an internal application which takes below 10% cpu usage normally. However sometimes it hit above 85% or more (and stays there) causing the server to become very slow. Currently we have to monitor this manually, kill the process and manually start it.
command / script that will kill the process (using pid will be the best option as i think) when it reaches 85% or higher
(I saw another question that suggested to use monit but I have to get this done using the standard commands available in the current installation - RHEL5)

I'm have some desktop computers sharing my Centos 5 server diskpace through NFS. From time to time, without any warning, lockd bugs and all the users that are using GTK applications like Firefox,Gnome.get stuck.
My first atempt is to restart the NFS, but locked files persist because I can kill the lockd pid process, even using root account , I suppose this is because it's a kernel process. Here is the message error I get when restarting NFS matrix kernel: lockd_down: lockd failed to exit, clearing pid

the process is mcelog. When I do as root kill -9 2323 which is pid of mcelog the process is not killed. I tried doing the same from top, press K and enter pid of mcelog. doing ps auwx | grep mcelog I see there are several results. I tried killing all of them like kill -9 2355 2341 3425 2345. But re-running the above commands still shows them as running. How else would I troubleshoot this to avoid restarting of the box.

I see in /etc/init/ssh.conf that sshd is designed to start on filesystemstop on runlevel SI understand that runlevel S is single user.Which says to me that sshd is not stopped on shutdown (runlevel 0).Also, sshd is in /usr/sbin/sshd and furthermoresudo lsof -p <sshd_pid>shows that it uses lib files in /usr/lib.So, my question is, if sshd is not stopped on shutdown YET sshd uses files in /usr, then how can/etc/rc0.d/S40umountfsever successfully umount /usr during shutdown when /usr is on its own partition? sshd should still be using the files, meaning the file system is busy. right?Yet, I'm pretty sure that my shutdowns used to complete successfully. (Edit : I guess they didn't - see next post)

I tried googling but didn't get any answer for this.I have a process called "abc" and it is running with PID "123".I have a putty session opened with PID "999".I am giving kill -TERM 123 from putty session.My process "abc" before dying it should catch the PID of the terminal which provided TERM signal to it.Is there any way to find this out

i installed it, but every time i start my system, sshd is running, but i can't find out where it's startup entry is located.Code:ls /etc/rc*.d | grep sshreturns nothing, which indeed is true, 'cause i removed the links from the runlevel directories. i checked the rc.local file which is empty and never added a line anywhere to start the ssh daemon explicit.i'm using the latest ubuntu with updates and everything (at least i think so). in my gnome startup application preferences the only thing related to ssh is the ssh key agent. but if i deactivate it, sshd still startsup.

I have an openSUSE 11.1 and I noticed that after installing a couple of things on it the sshd is not starting anymore on reboot. how can I debug this problem. Is there a log file so that I can see what was the problem? If I want to use ssh I have to start it from yast every time the computer restarts.

Running 11.4 x64, I've tried everything I can think of (which is not saying a lot) but I can't get sshd started on boot. Running /etc/init.d/sshd starts the service manually with no problem but I really need it started on boot.
I can't find anything different when comparing this instance with other similar instances where sshd does start but this instance is an update from 11.3 where sshd was not enabled and the others are all clean installs where sshd was enabled during installation, if that makes any difference.

I have a java service that needs to be run in a gnu screen session so that I can -r into it to access it's interactive shell. I would like this to run at start-up. More importantly, it crashes frequently so I need the service to restart itself when it crashes. How do I go about doing this myself? My previous experience with shell scripting amounts to putting ./service in a file and marking it executable. This will be running on a FreeBSD server, but I might put it on a Linux server soon also. So any caveats on the differences would be useful information.

When a user that has rsa public key set in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file logs in via ssh an sshd process is started to handle the ssh session.Periodically we audit the authorized keys and remove them from the system and authorized_keys file. This means the next log in attempt will fail, which is fine.However we need to terminate current ssh sessions in progress that use the rsa key.I have not been able to determine a way to map sshd processes with authorized_keys entries.

when i unload and reload my module ath5k, something is setting my wireless interface in managed mode. I suspect is NetworkManager but when i try to kill this process (using -9 parameter) it restarts. how to kill it or which process is starting it over and over again?

Besides finding out the process ID and typing kill ID? Ctrl+C doesn't work. If I start my java program (which runs in a loop), Ctrl+C only types ^C and doesn't do anything. I have to open up another terminal, log in, find the ID, and kill it.

Sometimes (rarely) when I try to open VLC it wont open, but it stays in the background and takes 98-100% of one core.
The problem is that I can't kill that vlc-process.

Is there any way to kill the vlc-process (without booting the machine)? I also tried the "killall vlc" and "kill 31641" as root with the same results.
I have Debian jessie and the only "nonofficial" repositories I have enabled are

And from those I have installed only chrome, and wine-development, and I dont think those could have anything to do with this problem.
Booting the machine does work, but I don't want to boot my machine just now. This happens about once per week

Ctrl-c doesn't always work to kill the current process (for instance, if that process is busy in certain network operations). In that case, you just see "^C" by your cursor, and can't do much else.What's the easiest way to force that process to die now without losing my terminal?
Summary of answers below:Usually, you can Ctrl-z to put the process to sleep, and then do "kill -9 process-pid", where you find the process's pid with 'ps' and other tools.On Bash (and possibly other shells) you can do "kill -9 %1" (or '%N' in general) which is easier. If Ctrl-z doesn't work, you'll have to open another terminal and kill from there.

Often I get the following message when starting FireFox:

To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.At the same time CPU usage goes to 100%, load is extremely high and my PC is becoming unresponsive.I tried killing the process: Code: killall -9 firefox but without success.In the System Monitor I see that firefox is marked as "uninterruptible" process.

I have a big problem with one of my processes named "mbusd" ;it is an opensource modbus RTU/TCP gateway when I plug USB to serial convertor to it my laptop without this process linux makes virtual ttyUSB very fine and when I unplug it it removes except some times (SOME TIMES not all the times) that I run mbusd process to work with, at that time during mbusd process work when I unplug USB/serial converter the virtual ttyUSB does not disappear and mbusd does not exit too and it turnes in something like this when I get ps -aux: mbusd [defunc] at this time I can not even kill it with -9 or -15 signals and pluging back the converter does not solve the problem too and mbusd does not exit or start to run again.
