Ubuntu Servers :: Set 8.04 To Use The 9.10 Repositories And Use Apt-get To Install Samba 3.4.0 From Them?
Feb 25, 2010
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as my Samba/LDAP PDC on my network. Unfortunately, I need to get a newer version of samba than the current repositories for 8.04 provide. I need the Samba 3.4.0 that has been updated for Ubuntu 8.10 to allow Windows 7 to join domain as outlined here (I am currently running 3.0.28a I think). Is there a way to set 8.04 to use the 9.10 repositories and use apt-get to install samba 3.4.0 from them?
When I use apt-get to install Samba the latest version is 3.0.26??????. The current stable version is 3.4.5 and 3.5 is about ready to be released. Is there anywhere I can get a deb package any newer that the one in APT? or will I have to compile from source?
I recently installed 11.4 32bit on my computer at my summer home. I carry a DVD with all my /home data. Then today I noticed that all my repositories are labeled "11.3" repositories. Everything works. Here is the output from "zypper lr -d"...
# | Alias | Name | Enabled | Refresh | Priority | Type | URI | Service
[Code]....
What is the correct method of moving to the 11.4 repositories?
I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: This response was from IP xx.yy.z.zz, reporting an IP address of xx.yy.z.zz.
Is it possible to install just one program from newer repositories? Our server is Ubuntu 10.04 but I need the newer ImageMagick which is available in the 10.10 repositories. If I use these repos, and try to apt-get install imagemagick, I am prompted to install 20 or so other new programs, which I fear will mess up the system.
I know it's kind of my fault but I have this problem. I have two machines running Intrepid. I should have upgraded them in due time but what's done is done. Now I need to install some packages there but the Intrepid is no longer supported - Intrepid repositories are no longer available.
I have been the webmaster of a webpage for a few years and I have always installed Apache and PHP using the source code. The reason is that I wanted to use a recent version of them and I couldn't find it in the repositories.
Now, we are going to purchase a new server with Ubuntu (we were using Fedora in the previous one) and I don't know if install those packages using synaptic (much easier) or install them from scratch using the source code.
Synaptic is great, specially installing modules for PHP, but I am afraid of not having updated versions in a few months.
I need a bind-server (I mean DNS server) with a SQL backend. As far as I have seen, the only viable option I have is to recompile bind9 with support for either MySQL or PostGre.
Link to this: [URL]with an additional
Code: apt-get install libpqxx3-dev
From some tutorials I have read, I see I need to recompile it to enable its SQL support.
But when I do it that way, I won't get any security updates, won't I?
So... Is there any bind server with SQL support in the repositories ? For that I don't have to worry about security updates...
I have Ubuntu Server 8.04 (LTS) installed and running well, but there a few packages that I'd like to upgrade, without upgrading the entire system (e.g, apache2). Is it possible to include both the Hardy (8.04) and Lucid (10.04) distributions in sources.list? Is that even safe? By the same token, can I add a Maverick repo to my list? I'm using "apache2" as an example, but this is more of a general question.
How should situations like this usually be handled, when only a select few packages would profit from an upgrade that resides in a different Ubuntu release?
On a similar note, is it possible to install two different versions of the same package using the APT tools? Let's say I want two different versions of php5 -- how would I go about doing that?
this is my output when I try to compile samba 4.0.0 alpha 7 in Ubuntu using the spec file provided in the samba packages:
bin/mergedobj/samba-util.o: In function `file_lines_parse': (.text+0x595c): undefined reference to `_talloc_steal' bin/mergedobj/samba-util.o: In function `data_blob_talloc_named':[code]....
I just installed ubuntu because the newer versions were not working for me. So I installed 7.10 and there is no repositories that are still up. Is there any repositories that I could add from the newer ones or other distro repositories.
I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

This is a fresh 11.04 install. I grabbed a couple of the basics (alternate browsers, media players, etcetera) but other than that I haven't made any modifications or installed any strange packages.
Code:
root@Jason-Lin:/# uname -a Linux Jason-Lin 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 11 03:31:50 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
I try to install the detdeb repo, i get this error.. Only one software management tool is allowed to run at the same time close the other application e.g. 'update manager', 'aptitude' or 'synaptic' first. i have none of those open. it was working completely fine before i installled the medibuntu and get deb repos... im completely new to ubuntu and linux. the only linux i know is from hacking my wii which is basically nothing. then when i try to install ANY software, i get this error. Previous installation hasn't been completed The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.
I am trying to install the build-essential package on my new Jaunty install, but I seem to get 404 Not Found for all the repositories. I have tried main repositories, US ones and the ones recommended in Software Sources as being the best choice, but I get the same response. I can't install any packages because of this. Could someone help me find the repositories for this distro?
About 2 years ago I installed SUSE10.3 over the internet. Now the older repositories seem to have disappeared completely and I can't install any new software or little tools that I have missed. Is there any way to find 10.3 repositories somewhere or do I need to make a completely new installation every year?
I upgraded my system from 11.1 to 11.2, unfortunately after the upgrade there were no repositories set up. My notebook already has 11.2 on it, so I just copied the addresses from there and tried to update. Everytime I try zypper up, or from yast online-update. I wait for 10 min, and get an timeout error.
In this blog post I explain how to use "Install/Remove Software" to configure your repositories, which repositories you'll want to add, how to configure their priority, and updating your system with the correct versions. Musing Allowed: OpenSUSE 11.4: Repositories
I may eventually transfer some of this to the opensuse website, but I never expected it to take several days just to write this one blog post so it probably won't be soon. Still, I hope that it's helpful to opensuse 11.4 users and I wrote the post so that it was targeted to regular users primarily but also for those looking to see how the repositories have changed with the update to 11.4.
I've just tried to install freepascal [URL] on CentOS 5 using 'yum install fpc', and it installed package fpc-2.2.2-3.el5.1.i386. Since official stable version of freepascal is 2.2.4 (and version 2.4 will soon be released as new stable version), is it possible to update "official" freepascal in CentOS 5 repository to 2.2.4 (and later possibly to 2.4) ? I've read somewhere (wiki or website or some other place), that CentOS wont have php 5.2.5 because official CentOS repositories are never changed. Does this also apply to other software (like freepascal)?
done 11.4 update from DVD on my two laptops and I'm trying to do my home machine now.Problem is that the DVD update does not find any repos. I told the update system to set up wired network using DHCP and everything seems OK, when I check the box to use separate media during installation the system won't find any community repositories and when I specify URL it simlply won't connect to the repo. As for as I can tell there is a connection to the internet, but maybe not
I have contacted Novell by telephone and they can' support the OpenSUSE OS.I'm downloading via a library (window's XP) computer and it does not download every thing I tell it to; so I have to often go back and some times I am sure I don't go back because I don't notice or can't figure out that I'm missing something. Also when I try to download any part of the repositories I have to (to bring it home and install it on my computer openSUSE 11.4 KDE,) sit there and click right, click open in new tab, go to the next one repeat.... and then once you reach the bottom of the screen you minimize the web page, and then click save, then tell it where to save, then go to the next one.......
1: put each and every repositories into a bunch of .tarbz2 (or any other achiving method,) files (700 MB would be greate,) so I can bring them home easier; reassembling the achives is mutch easier ten not downloading what I need and it takes mutch less time.
2: send me an E-mail doark@mail.com detailing how to tell your machine: 2A: it's a sever 2b: it's serving X and X infomation 2c: when someone types in lets say "free software" my website is in the choises (in other word advertizing,) and 2d: where to send the money it gets from someone logging on to my web page.
I've been trying to install Handbrake (video converter) but its not in main repositories. So i went here and here to try and find a way to add the PPA. I got more or less the same error both times:
Code: https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~stebbins/+archive/handbrake-snapshots: <urlopen error [Errno 8] _ssl.c:499: EOF occurred in violation of protocol> and this: Code: https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~stebbins/+archive/handbrake-releases: <urlopen error [Errno 8] _ssl.c:499: EOF occurred in violation of protocol>
Today I was trying to install the Bespin window theme for KDE. To compile Bespin I need a few packages that I do not have installed. I googled and looked around for a few hours but I'm not sure which repo they are in. The packs are called kdebase-dev, kdelibs5-dev, libplasma-dev, kdebase-workspace-dev. How can I find these packeges?
