General :: SAMBA - Could Not Access PID File For Smbd
Feb 9, 2010samba quit working after win7 I'm new-ish to linux(not using ubuntu tho, but servers)i don't know what PID is.. i just installed a new ubuntu server of an old computer, for file sharing in workgroup with samba, and a little apache server running webmin is also running, giving me an error when restarting samba all worked very well untill i used win7 to access the \server this blog post have a fix for vista7? connecting to samba, but wont fix my problem after i connected to the share with win7 nothing seems to work

i dont have any smbd.pid in the samba dir, should i create a new one.. and where do i get the PID -id that should be inside?
Ubuntu Servers :: Smbd Not Running - Reinstall It But Still Giving The Erroneous (?) Status Message ?
Feb 3, 2010Here's the background info -- I recently installed Ubuntu server 8.04 on TWO machines that are exactly identical.On one machine, all seems perfect.On the other, when I execute "/etc/init.d/samba status" it always shows that smbd is NOT running.But it would seem that it IS running, since I can access the shares I've set up without difficulty either from smbclient on the server or from the windows boxes on the network.ps ax lists smbd as a process as well.The log tells me nothing -- it just reports that samba started. No errors. Not much of anything in there. And if I execute smbstatus, that works just like you'd expect.since the two machines are identical (and I mean exactly the same), and only one is doing this.
I guess I should be happy since they both work (seemingly perfectly).But it still bothers me that I'm getting the message that smbd isn't running on one of them. I tried uninstalling samba and reinstalling it on the machine giving me the erroneous (?) status message. But that changed nothing.Right now there's no data on the machine, and it's not in production, so just doing a bare metal reinstall of the OS is an option. But I'd like to understand what's happening.
Ubuntu :: Bastille Removed All Permissions From Samba Smbd Nmbd Files
Mar 24, 2010After running Bastille to harden my server, Samba stopped working. It had asked me if I would like to disable Samba during the configuration and I selected 'no' so it should not have done this.
When I tried:

sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart
Nothing happened. I found in the script, if it does not detect smbd and nmbd running, it just exits -- no error message, just simply does nothing.
I found that /usr/sbin/smbd and /usr/sbin/nmbd both had all permissions removed. I set them back to 755 and restarted samba normally.
Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Shares Folders But Not Printers Until Restart The Smbd Service?
Jul 18, 2010Just like the title states, as soon as my server comes up, I see the samba share that I made and can browse it just fine.
I don't see the printer share nor can I print to the shared printer until I execute service smbd restart from an ssh login. Then I see the printer and then I can network print.
Before restarting smbd, I do check to see if it's already running and it is (two instances are running in fact). When I restart smbd, there are still two smbd services running but they have higher PID numbers (and I can then print).
I'm running 10.04. how to make it all start up happily the first time without any intervention from me?

1. it is always going in default case on client side.2. and i also want my program to send requests/messages to client periodically. means after some interval (say after every 2,3 mins) server sends next request to client.

Oct 4, 2009It's been awhile since I posted anything which is a good sign my install has been working well and I have been able to handle most everything. However, I'm not able to handle this issue. I recently installed F11 and everything went well. But, when trying to see my other computers on the local network, I cannot. I receive this error message: Unable to mount location Failed to receive shared list from server. I understand the message as it is obvious, but do not know how to fix it.

Mar 18, 2010I know this isn't exactly a programming question, but it popped up in my use of git for programming projects at least. I've got a web server that I use to host my git repos on, but my ubuntu box seems to "lose" the ability to connect to it via SSH. I'll get a "connection refused" error when I try to ssh or use git. Rebooting my local machine will fix the problem, but only temporarily. I can still connect to the web interface just fine, and the problem manifests with other servers as well.
I've been working around it by pulling my changes over to my laptop and pushing from there, but that's sub-optimal as you can imagine. Has anyone seen something like this? I'd be tempted to say it's some kind of IP caching problem, but I can't connect even using the IP address of the server directly.

When I try to connect to the server from a Windows XP system, I am able to enter the appropriate sharename as well as the username and password.

I have tride to remove an install samba. And deleted smb.conf. And startet with the original.

Ubuntu :: Not Automatically Starting Smbd (upstart Event)
Jan 9, 2011I have posted this somewhere here before and solved it but can't seem to find it. Just waisted 50 minutes googling and checking man pages for upstart. By the way; are man pages written by someone using their tows to type and getting beaten by a stick for every character they type? It seems missing a lot of info. Anyway, I know smbd is started with /etc/init/smbd.conf and there is a line like:

(manually) I can't seem to find any useful information but did seem to find the upstart man pages a hundred times or so (same info same missing parts). I would love to get involved writing documentation for these things if only I know what I was doing.

Jul 1, 2010I have Apache, MySql server, and phpMyAdmin installed on my desktop. With the default installation of phpMyAdmin, I should be able to log in as root without a password. (Or at least every other time I have installed it, I could.) However, that isn't the case. I can't log in to phpMyAdmin period. I have tried setting the password for root with MySql through the terminal. Still no results. No matter what I do, when I try to log in to phpMyAdmin, I am denied access.
this is a fairly common issue (though I have never encountered it before) as I found similar posts in numerous forums, etc. I finally found a solution and now have it working. In case others have a similar problem, I am posting the solution that I used here. First open a terminal. Then use the following command

mysqladmin -u root password NEWPASSWORD
Substitute NEWPASSWORD with the password that you want to use and then you should be able to log in to phpMyAdmin as root with the new password.

Can any one please tell me what to do? I think the problem is coming by passing get parameters, if i just run feeds.php everything goes fine, but I need to pass in those.

And after about 2 - 3 seconds all is back to normal.My USB setup is a bit complicated (mostly because I could). A 7 port hub is connected to a USB port on the computer. Among other things, the 7 port hub is connected to a four port hub on the monitor (Viewsonic). The mouse is connected to the 4 port hub. The PS1 keyboard is connected to the PS1-to-USB convertor which is connected to the 4 port hub.

Debian Multimedia :: Xmodmap Periodically Resets
Jan 3, 2016I have a custom .Xmodmap file to change the keyboard layout. The problem is that sometimes the keyboard layout changes back to the default. I have seen the lights on the keyboard blink at times, so I tried unplugging and reconnecting the keyboard and yes - that reset the layout. I can see keyboard removed/detected entries in the logs as well, so I guess my keyboard reconnects sometimes, I don't know why. However the solution from the post earlier (to rename the xmodmap file to ~/.Xmodmap) did not work. So is there another default filename I should use? Or do I have to enable xmodmap to run when a keyboard is plugged in somehow?
The only thing I can think of right now is to monitor /var/log/Xorg.0.log for "Adding input device USB Keyboard" and running xmodmap when that happens... but I'm really hoping for a better solution.If I can't fix the xmodmap problem, maybe I can fix the usb disconnects.I read something about power saving settings for usb. After some digging, I found that those settings are in /sys/bus/usb/devices/.../power/. However, disabling autosuspend for the hub did not seem to work (it was already disabled for the keyboard).
But I found something else in kern.log. Perhaps the keyboard disconnects has something to do with static electricity?

Mar 14, 2010I recently updated my girlfriends laptop (and my own) to KDE 4.4 (using the Factory repository). I am also using some additional repositories like PackMan.
I recently read on this forum, that the updater-applet is only updating from the main repositories (the ones set up after install). I would like to update from all updates periodically using "zypper dup".
I read somewhere else, that cronjobs are used to run scripts based on schedules. how I could run "zypper dup" with a cronjob and preferably under root, so I dont have to type the password every time?
